In Pokémon, there are lots of different moves used by different Pokémon. Every week, we shall focus the discussion on a different move, and there will be some base questions that would help you start this off. This week, Bubble is chosen.

This Generation 1 move is sort of a traditional Water attack, since this is the first Water attack that the Water starter of Kanto learns, before acquiring the (at that time) stronger Water Gun. It is only recently that this move received an upgrade in power. Usually, when bubbles are involved, you won't normally expect to be harmed by it in a great manner, but this one seems to hurt when it sprays. In fact, it even lowers Speed!

Here's the in-game description for this move:

In-game Description (XY) said:
Type: Water (Special)
Base Power: 40
Accuracy: 100%
PP: 30

A spray of countless bubbles is jetted at the opposing Pokémon. This may also lower their Speed stats.

Here are the usual possible questions about this move:
  • How does certain Pokémon (who knows it) use this move? What kind of purpose would this move have for them (in the Pokémon World)?
  • How could this move be used to aid a profession in the Pokémon World?
  • Could this move realistically be used by any Pokémon who doesn't learn it normally? If yes, please explain your choices.
  • How would this move be used in battling, realistically or video game-wise?

Other questions (You could ask other critical questions beyond the listed):
  • In Generation 6, Bubble's power is doubled, so it matches Water Gun now. How does Bubble, normally weaker than Water Gun, have the same power as Water Gun?
  • How do a stream of bubbles not only hurt the opponent, but hinder their Speed?
  • Compared to Water Gun, this move is not as widespread. Why is it that not every Water-type get this move?

Here are the current (known) users of this move (Put in Spoiler due to large learner list):
(Level-up)
  • Squirtle, Wartortle & Blastoise
  • Poliwag, Poliwhirl, Poliwrath & Politoed
  • Krabby & Kingler
  • Horsea, Seadra & Kingdra
  • Chinchou & Lanturn
  • Azurill, Marill & Azumarill
  • Corsola
  • Mantyke & Mantine
  • Surskit & Masquerain
  • Corphish & Crawdaunt
  • Piplup, Prinplup & Empoleon
  • Phione & Manaphy
  • Tympole, Palpitoad & Seismitoad
  • Frillish & Jellicent
  • Froakie, Frogadier & Greninja
  • Skrelp & Dragalge
  • Goomy, Sliggoo & Goodra

    (Breeding)
  • Tentacool & Tentacruel

    (Event Only)
  • Magikarp & Gyarados (Gen 2)

Thanks for reading, and happy discussing!

So not every Water-type can learn this move? Hmmm... ah, so Totodile is unable to learn bubble despite being a Water-type.

But I get it - Totodile has very sharp teeth that all the bubbles would burst before they'd even leave his mouth.

Yup - none of the users above listed have teeth.

You're right, all of them don't have teeth (I didn't realise that myself). The exception is Gyarados, but that one is Event, so it doesn't really count in the long term.

Thanks for reading.

Probably the force used to exert Water Gun is equal to the force used to exert Bubble.

How do a stream of bubbles not only hurt the opponent, but hinder their Speed?

I guess it's like cobwebs; if you make contact with them, you'll go all crazy-moving and flail around.

I never found much use for it in the main series games, but it's extremely useful in the Mystery Dungeon series because of its range.
