Now that Legends: Arceus is out, and many of us have seen Hisui for ourselves, this means that its time to rework my version of the setting with some of the info we know now.

Some Questions, Answered

--Wouldn't we run into a problem with two Lucas/Dawns?

For the purposes of this new version of Hisui, everything about time travel and time distortion is cut out--the ancient ancestors of Ash and co.--Dawn included--were meant to be in Hisui all along. The Sensational Six of the past are the ancient ancestors of today's Sensational Six (Ash-Misty-Brock-Serena-May-Dawn)--they are in turn reincarnations of six ancient heroes known as the Six Spirits (phoenix/dragon/Raikou/Delphox/Beautifly/Deerling.)

--What about building the Pokedex?

That will mainly take place in the background for this first adventure set in this new Hisui. But this is not to say our heroes won't help Lucas/Kouki and the Galaxy Expedition Team out a few times along the way.

--How comfortable are people with Pokemon in this version?

For the most part, people are mainly neutral to Pokemon, but are very respectful of the power they have. Those that own Pokemon are classified into wielders and tamers (the ancestors of today's Trainers). Tamers are particularly revered in Hisui because they are relatively rare--those who have tamed a Pokemon are said to be very skilled, and tamers with multiple Pokemon are seen as gods.

--How comfortable are people with foreigners in this version?

Since Waku (the super-region this version of Hisui is a part of) has only recently reopened to foreign relations, some people see foreigners as a threat, but the vast majority see foreigners as curiosities, and some are willing to give foreign products a try. Soap from Kalusienne (modern day Kalos) is particularly valued, and in some circles, is worth more than gold. Some Kalusien visitors have taught the Hisuians their methods of making soap, setting the stage for the Wakunese soap boom. Serena, nee Golden Delphox is sometimes called shabon no onna--the soap lady--because of her vast collection of Kalusien soap, and willingness to trade and sell her soap.

More to come as people ask questions, or I think of other questions people may have.

The Legend of the Six Spirits

One of the best loved, and oft told and adapted stories in Hisui is "The Legend of the Six Spirits"--a tale of the Six Guardian Spirits' journey to Celestial Crown Mountain to awaken Arceus, defeat an evil sect (what this evil sect is named depends on which version of the story you hear), and restore peace to Hisui. The tale has been adapted to the Hisuian stage and literature, scenes from the story have been immortalized in paintings, and many episodes have been set to music or have inspired tunes. Every Hisuian knows at least one episode from the story, and children study the tale in school. The Six Guardian Spirits are so popular, they are featured in millions of plays, books, songs, and dances.

Many believe that when the world is in grave danger, the Six Guardian Spirits--the phoenix, the dragon, the Raikou, the Delphox, the Beautifly, and the Deerling--will walk the world again, banishing evil as they once again journey to Celestial Crown Mountain, and awaken Arceus.

If asked why those specific creatures, a Hisuian will tell you this:

"The phoenix is courageous and strong, bringing growth and new life to the land. Its flame is not one that destroys and consumes, but inspires, warms, and nurtures."

"The dragon is a lucky spirit; freeing the oppressed and judging those who would oppress others. It is also renowned for its wisdom, and understands there is a time for everything, for each yang, there is also a yin."

"The Raikou is strong, and yet he is gentle, for his thunder heralds the rains the nourish the land. He is proud of who he is, but never boasts about it. He is as much a warrior as he is a scholar, well versed in the arts and culture. But when he does fight, he strikes hard."

"The Delphox may have a bad reputation, but many more Delphox wish good to the world, including Arceus' divine envoy, the lady Kitsune. Kitsune embodies all of the Delphox's and their cousin Ninetales' good qualities. She is clever, wise, and a giver of good fortune. But she will not hesitate to punish the proud, the greedy, and the evil."

"The Beautifly, in her many colored raiment, flies about the land, bringing good luck, health, and prosperity to all. But don't let her benevolent nature fool you, her graceful dance in the sky is deadly to those who would deceive and bring harm. But to those who wish to turn from their wicked ways, she is a sign of growth and transformation."

"The Deerling, the divine messengers of the Legendaries. They symbolize the wisdom and grace of Arceus. But they can and they will fight if provoked, with divine speed and power. Those that receive one of their attacks will not soon forget it!"

Martial Arts and Martial Titles in Hisui

In the world of my imagined Hisui, martial arts are a very important part of the culture, and the dojos of many sects, schools, and paths dot the land. Those that are willing to learn can learn everything from fighting unarmed to even using parasols, compasses, puppets, and paintbrushes as fighting implements. Many schools and arts even border on magical powers.

The heartbeat of all martial arts (and by extension, magic) is ki, or Aura, as it is sometimes called. Ki can come in many different colors and elementals, but its most basic form is blue-white. Depending on what colors of ki are in a person's heart innately, different elementals will come more easily to them. This is not to say that someone with innate fire (red) ki can't learn a water (blue) ki move; but learning an elemental their innate power(s) are weak to will take longer.

So far, the known colors of ki are:

Silver/blue-white--no elemental
Green --earth
Light green--wood/nature
Red--fire
Lavender--wind
Blue--water
Cyan--ice
Yellow--thunder
White--light
Purple--cosmos (the moon, the stars, galaxies, etc.)
Rainbow--every elemental; the most powerful ki
Black--shadow

Almost every martial artist, mystic, performer, warrior, and the like will often take a martial title that reflects their abilities or a part of their heritage. For example, a storyteller that specializes in stories of great warriors might be called Honorable Song. Members of a family or a clan will often have similar titles.

The Music of Hisui

Music in this version of Hisui is basically traditional Chinese and Japanese music ran through a blender, which some very slight influence from Celtic music (as Kalusiens and Galarians were the first foreigners to settle in Hisui after its reopening--referred to as the Reopening of the Jade Gate in Hisuian history books).

Flutes are very important in Hisuian culture--used in sacred music, secular music, and referred to as the hero's instrument in the Hisuian theater. There are several different kinds of flutes available in Hisui:

--The sideblown bansi, a bamboo flute famous for its distinct, high piercing sound (similar to the Chinese dizi). In addition to being the hero's instrument in the theater, it is also well known as a solo instrument, with thousands of both upbeat and more relaxed pieces.

--The endblown kidi, an endblown flute popularly called a Celestica Flute among the people. Traditionally white colored, it is not unheard of for kidi to come in a rainbow of colors--and every kidi is unique to its owner. Kidi are often played in sacred settings, but there are a growing number of secular pieces written for it. Some say that those who have successfully tamed a Pokemon will have a kidi.

--The Galarian wooden flute (similar to the real world Irish flute) and the tin whistle are common in communities where those from Galaria have settled, and the native Hisuians are fascinated by the wood flute's strong and earthy sound and the tin whistle's sweet, distinct sound, comparing the tin whistle to a miniature kidi (or kokidi, literally "little kidi", in the Hisuian language. Satoshi enjoys collecting and making flutes, and has even received a wooden flute and kokidi as friendship gifts from Serena

The Western violin and mandolin are also becoming common in communities where Europans have settled. Serena has both instruments, and will happily play them for anyone that asks--both Kalosian and Galarian (Unova is still a Galarian colony at this time) dances she knows, and Hisuian songs adapted to a Western instrument. She is teaching Kasumi and Hikari how to play the Western violin after they both tried and failed to learn the Hisuian tikin--a three stringed fiddle-like instrument similar to the Chinese erhu. At this stage, Kasumi can play a few simple Hisuian melodies, and Hikari is getting the hang of playing, even though she only knows how to play two songs well so far.

--The Hisuian harp (which sounds similar to the Chinese guzheng), has long been revered for its long history as a solo instrument, and the narrator's instrument in the Hisuian theater. It is also revered as the instrument of traveling storytellers--which is how Takeshi owns one. Acoustic guitars and the Galarian harp are common around Europan communities. Takeshi has received an acoustic guitar from Serena, but he is not very good at it yet.

Skills, Powers, and Spells in Hisui

The world of Hisui is filled with all manner of magical and martial arts, and millions of named abilities and skills, with more being created each day.

As a general rule, the more powerful a skill's name, the longer and flowerier its name. But this is not foolproof--some very powerful skills only have one or two word names, and some weaker skills have a long and flowery name to intimidate foes.

The Pokemon type chart still exists in Hisui, albeit in a watered down form:

Normal=Spirit--non elemental skills

Fire is the same in both realms. Fighting is also considered part of Fire (Satoshi is attuned to fire innately)

Water is the same in both realms. (Kasumi is attuned to water innately)

Grass and some Bug=Nature (Takeshi is surprisingly attuned to nature thanks to his innate earth attunement; Haruka is also attuned to nature)

Electric is known as Thunder in Hisui (Satoshi is attuned to thunder because fire and thunder are surprisingly related)

Psychic, Dragon, and Fairy are considered Light (Serena and Hikari are attuned to light, and Haruka can tap into light to a point)

Flying and some Bug are considered Wind. (Haruka is innately attuned to Wind)

Ice is the same in both realms (Kasumi is attuned to ice because ice is related to water)

Poison, Dark, and Ghost are considered Shadow

Ground, Rock, and Steel are considered Earth (Takeshi is attuned to earth innately)

Some Fairy and noble Poison, Dark, and Ghost types are considered Luna, the good side of darkness

An Overview of Celebration Village

When they are not traveling or adventuring, our heroes make Celebration Village--what is today Jubilife City--their home. The Galaxy Team makes their headquarters here, and many martial arts dojos--including our heroes--are set up here, training Galaxy Team recruits and common folk alike.

When they are not training students, our heroes can be found around the village:

--Satoshi can be found playing one of his many flutes for tips in the village park. He will sometimes make and sell flutes in the market.

--Kasumi can often be found training by the river that flows through town.

--Takeshi can be found weaving tales to young and old in the town square (as storytellers are seen as the teachers of the young, and entertainers to the young at heart in Hisui--so they are effectively school for Hisuian kids.)

--Serena can be found in her soap workshop, Festival Soapworks; making Kalusien style soap to sell, and teaching any soapmaker how to make Kalusien style soap. For the residents of the village, and Hisuians in general, Kalusien soap is worth more than gold. Every bar she makes is imprinted with an eight point star.

--Haruka is often found performing in the village theater, often playing major roles in the community troupe. The others have also pitched in for a play, as well.

--Hikari is often found assisting Kouki in his work for the Survey Corps.

The Kabenohana Restaurant

Nestled near the residential areas of Celebration Village is the Kabenohana Restaurant. While the restaurant's name means 'wallflower', it is hardly a quiet place, with many customers lining up to try ramen, stirfries, bento boxes, sushi, and the house specialty, potato mochi (which can be eaten plain, or filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables), just to name a few items on offer. It is particularly popular with the Galaxy Team--various members, Mistress Moon Chaser, Kouki, Sage Rowan, and Commander Thunder Tree are known to stop by.

Chef True Vine, alongside his Gardevoir Akahime (Red Princess) and Aokou (Blue Prince) run the restaurant--True Vine does the cooking while Akahime and Aokou keep the food moving quickly, keep the restaurant clean, and do the financial heavy lifting.

There are some that believe True Vine knows martial arts. In a way, this is true--if you consider teppanyaki tricks and cooking tricks martial arts. His trademark "move" is named "Many Potato Mochi, Just the Way You Like Them"--True Vine creates as many potato mochi as the visitor can stomach, simply by snapping. Snapping again stops the mochi from appearing. True Vine can also create meat, cheese, or veggie filled potato mochi this way.

The group and Kouki are known to be regular customers--to the point Akahime and Aokou know their preferred orders, and will have them ready as soon as they see them approach. Takeshi is also known to entertain the customers with his stories and vina tunes--and True Vine built a stage in the dining area just for this purpose.

The group's preferred orders are:

Satoshi enjoys Combusken stir fry with lots of beef potato mochi

Kasumi prefers a sushi sampler bento box

Takeshi prefers beef ramen

Serena prefers seeded Combusken (what sesame chicken is called in this version of Hisui--True Vine came up with the dish and several others to appeal to Kalusien and Galarian visitors)

Haruka prefers the everything rice (fried rice with a lot of meat and veggies mixed in)

Hikari prefers Combusken ramen with soy sauce

The Nijitama Theater

Nestled in the heart of the village's entertainment district stands the Nijitama Theater, where the resident Tawame troupe (the Nijitama Players) calls home. The troupe's plays are very popular, mainly because of Haruka's beautiful acting and Takeshi's exciting and creative scripts and masterful narration (while Takeshi will typically narrate the plays, he sometimes will play a role)

Commander Thunder Tree and Mistress Moon Chaser have their own private box in the theater--and every actor in the troupe knows to give 120% if they are in the audience.

When writing a script, Takeshi draws on folk tales, fairy tales, mythology, stories any Hisuian would know, and Pokemon lore. Tales of the Six Spirits' journey and comedies are popular, as are martial arts stories, adventurous romances, folk and fairy tales, and tales of mythology. He is aware of each troupe members' strengths and weaknesses, and will write the roles accordingly. With more Galarian and Kalusiens visiting Hisui, he has written a few Hisuian versions of Kalusien and Galarien stories in an attempt to appeal to them--a Hisuian adaptation of 'Cinderella' proved a rousing success.

The troupe performs for major holidays and festivals, with New Year festivities, the Cheri Blossom Festival, Golden Week, the Maple Festival in the fall, and the Star Festival in the winter being the most popular times for plays, although the troupe performs all year round.

Currently, the troupe is performing the adventurous romance "The Warrior and the Moon Maiden" (which is very loosely based on a folktale of a warrior's long quest to rescue a moon goddess he loves from a ruthless daimyo--when it came time for the moon goddess to return to heaven, she took the warrior with her, where he became the Northern Star, guiding mortals on journeys of their own.)

The others often pitch in to play roles with the troupe--Satoshi is in high demand as a heroic actor, Kasumi will often play a bushihime--the warrior women of the Hisuian stage that serve as a hero's companion--or can be heroes themselves, Serena will sometimes fill in with the heroine's role if Haruka is playing a different role, or play a comic role, and Hikari will often play miko--usually Kanade, the warrior-miko of Wakunese myth.

Kouki is a huge fan of Satoshi's and Haruka's dynamic together, and will come see any play where they play the leads (with Commander Thunder Tree's permission)
