■The fighting trio is based on the three muskateers
■Cobalion‘s based on Athos and is meant to have a thorny look
■Terrakion is based off of Porthos and has some angles reminiscent of a hatchet. Supposed to look like a formidable opponent who can stop a pokemon in its tracks.
■Virizion is based on Aramis and was modeled to be nimble and have sharp angles
■Larvesta is partially based on Taiyou No Tou (specifically the red adornments jutting out of its head)
■Volcarona originally had only 4 wings and the black spots represent dark spots on the sun
■Cottonee and Whimsicott were based on sheep
■Petilil and Lilligant were actually slated to have another pokemon in their evolutionary family, but that plan was scrapped. Lilligant is like a pretty daughter who’s always too late.
■Haxorus was one of the first designs to be finished and they were fairly proud of it. It can attack simply by shaking its head.
■Darumaka and Darmanitan were inspired after the designer saw dharma dolls being burned at a festival. They kind of resembled a gorilla so that’s how the fire/monkey parts came into the pokemon.
■Stunfisk was originally designed with an Angler Fish in mind, but obviously turned out a bit different. It was also a water/electric type but they ended up making it a ground/electric to balance out the type spread of pokemon.
■Frillish and Jellicent had the ghost type added on at the end for the sake of adjusting what types Unova had which disappointed the designer.
■Sawsbuck was already an idea for a pokemon before seasons had been added into the game
■Litwick, Lampent, and Chandelure were originally designed when they wanted an evolutionary line based on an open flame -> candle -> lanturn, but obviously it ended up out of order.
■Seismitoad was designed before Tympole and Palpitoad. The protrusions are one of this evolutionary line’s features.
■Klink, Klang, Klinklang were sort of inspired by Dugtrio
■Dwebble and Krustle were sort of inspired by kiln-fired pottery
■Scraggy and Scrafty obviously owe their existence to the low and baggy jean trend and also are reminiscent of a snake with its shed skin
■Yamask and Cofagrigus were meant to look scary, but also have a certain charm
■Pawniard and Bisharp are urban pokemon. Bisharp commands Pawniard who clings to its foes and cuts them with the blades on its stomach

Did you guys see this yet? Hmm so their was originally a Pokemon between Petlili and Liligant makes sense since Petlili goes through such a change when it evolves.

These are all interesting trivia, but where did you get these facts?

Thanks for reading.

I find it very interesting that some pokemon's types came to be because Game Freak wanted to balance them out this time.

Now I see why Maggyo is a Ground/Electric type (as opposed to the expected Water/Electric type). Ground is one of the worst types defensively in the entire game, though. Adding on the Electric type only added another weakness to it. Maggyo in total has four weaknesses, four resistances, and one immunity.

As opposed to a Water/Electric type which only has two weaknesses and five resistances...

Meh decision.

Up until this point, it made absolutely no sense that Pururiru's line was Water/Ghost as well.

Since we've had an abundance of Dark-types in this gen, now I see why Blitzle and Zebstrika are pure Electric-types.

Three gears = three mole heads.

As stated above, the Kling line could also have inspiration from Magneton.

It does make sense tha Murungel is a Ghost type: (taken from bulbapedia):Origin

Burungel and its pre-evolution were most likely inspired by the Nurarihyon, a jellyfish youkai that is either shown as a demonized jellyfish or as a jellyfish-like man who wears refined, sometimes regal, clothing. It is also possible that they was inspired by the Kurage no Hinotama, a sort of jellyfish-like will-o'-the-wisp. Its design is inspired by the jellyfish, in particular the Crown Jellyfish, and monarch attire; the male form's appearance based on a king's while the female's is based on a queen's.

'm not sure I quite understand what they mean by Pawniard and Bisharp being 'urban' pokemon. So, what, are we talking knife crimes or something here?

They are from the newest issue of Nintendo Dream.

Don't lie. You got it from PokeJungle, who happened to translate it. At least give credit to him for translating it.

That was an interesting read. Especially the part Stunfisk originally being water/electric.

sheesh...
the info was still from Nintendo Dream anyway...

how it said about petilil and liligant originally having another stage in their evo line, were we talking about a:

Petilil -> ???? -> Liligant or

Petilil -> liligant -> ????

situation?

i'd say the first, like somebody said, Petilil goes through amazing changes upon evolving, for it to be slower, and maybe more natural (not that anyone gives a ***) it would have a middle stage, but Audino.

Well it is New York

(Though I don't remember hearing much Knife Crimes around here....)

I think there's enough people who've used knives here for it to count.

Anyway. I imagine the 3rd form in Lilligant's line would've been a middle one, because Lilligant looks fully grown, so I can't imagine it being anywhere else but the middle.

You know, it's very interesting that some of the Pokemon underwent a type change during development, particularly both the Jellicent family and Stunfisk. However, Jellicent I appreciate because I wanted a jellyfish Pokemon that is Water/Ghost, so it's great that the type change occurred. Stunfisk is somewhat of an oddball; if Stunfisk is planned to be Water/Electric like it was originally going to be, I can see it being very, very useful in competitive battling. There has to be a reason Rotom-W was deemed to have the best type change among the Rotom Formes, you know.

Thanks for reading.

I like stunfisks typing, but they should have given it an evolution with better stats and a 'cooler' design. I remember hearing of a Ground/Electric Pokemon based of a Sting Ray... I was largely disappointed when i saw the design.

I think the original idea for the litwik line was pretty cool. An open flame would look a bit like a Fire Gastly.

I just remembered that Frillish and Jellicent got Damp as one of their abilities. Surely, anyone who plays the games before knows that Ghost is immune to Explosion, so it seems like a useless option to them, eh? Well, I am guessing that when they implemented Damp on them, the developers decided to add the Ghost-type, meaning that they decided to put Cursed Body on them instead of Damp, as it's a Ghost-type ability, and they decided that Damp is put as an "extra" ability since it's already implemented (I guess). Still, any other ability other than Damp on them would be more useful.

Thanks for reading.

Stunfisk originally being a water-type really explains why you find it in puddles.

Also, Frillish and Jellicent only get Damp through the DreamWorld. But yeah, it is pointless xD

Does Damp prevent Explosion from working in doubles and triples? If it does, then it isn't so useless.
