Nintendo DS Wi-Fi USB Connector Revealed

Also revealed are new, simple details, outlining how you'll be connecting your DS and when.

Nintendo of Japan have today, somewhere, held their previously mentioned Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection Press Conference.

At this stage, details are scarce, but we've managed to obtain a couple of images displaying the Wi-Fi USB Connector, that Aussie-Nintendo.com was informed of by Nintendo earlier in the year.

DS users will be able to purchase the adapter seen in the above image and simply connect it to the USB port of a broadband-enabled PC and after a click or two, the PC becomes a home wireless hotspot. Therefore this creates a gateway to the web for the Nintendo DS.

Then, on the DS itself, users will navigate through a few more simple steps before successfully becoming connected. The image below, although in Japanese, officially shows this process...


Of course, there are still more ways for DS gamers to connect. Certain currently available wireless routers will be compatible with the DS, and from what we've heard, NEC and Buffalo products have been confirmed.

Further, Nintendo has previously said that they are teaming up with public hotspot providers to create more gateways without the use of any additional hardware. Users will only have the chance to access these in larger, populated cities, and DS demo units in retail stores will most likely also become hotspots.

Unfortunately, no Australian details on this have been announced. Until then, users will possibly only be able to connect via the use of a PC - unless of course, the demo units become hotspots.

Nintendo's DS Wi-Fi games Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World have yet to be given exact Australian dates, although both will reach our shores by the year's end.

According to DS-X2.com, Nintendo also reiterated that users will be able to build a buddy list via local connection. But further, they revealed that in order to connect to users across the globe, and other Aussie-Nintendo.com members, you'll make use of everyone's unique 12-digit number, that replaces any usernames and passwords.

The last word on D/P was vague on whether it will be or not. "Wi-Fi Enabled for up to 16 people". Not just Wireless Multiplayer but 'Wi-Fi'. Indicates online so let's hope so.

I personally believe it'd be pretty stupid for it not to have online and see it as a very likely outcome.

"WiFi" always means ad-hoc multiplayer unless otherwise specified.

Regardless of whether it's a smart idea or not, it's not confirmed.
