The PKM Database said:
According to our source who just attended the Nintendo World Store launch party event, there was a significant amount of drama. First we would like to point out that the flyer posted on Bulbapedia was fake. The third line regarding the Mystery Gift was intentionally photoshopped by a member of their site in an effort to create his/her own event. Throughout the event there were announcements through the Nintendo World Store speakers NOT to download any Mystery Gifts as they will CORRUPT your game. A rotund, bearded, and generally unkempt individual dressed as a Team Rocket grunt was escorted out of the event by security for distributing a very hacked level 100 shiny Gengar from Lovely Place. There were at least 2 reported Wi-Fi Mystery Gift signals at the event which ended about one hour ago.

Other than the Mystery Gift drama, the party was smooth and everyone was satisfied with the variety of entertainment offered. We will have pictures of the party later on tonight, so check back soon! Thanks for reading and for those who were there, enjoy playing Platinum!

The perpetrator was apparently this man:

...ewww.

Because of that...that thing there...is one of the reasons I don't like cosplay. Ewww...

So we have this one claim that this guy did it from Fenzo666.
Maybe they just want everyone to believe it was this guy, seeing how he has no beard.

We still don't know who faked the flier that announced the Mystery Gift.

Before it was posted on db.pokesav.org, I already removed the false info from Bulbanews. See here:

Edit:
The following I think is interesting to consider: A similar incident happened last fall in Germany at the Darkrai events. Someone was sending out a Mystery Gift signal for a hacked Arceus. Later it was some Rom Hackers or so that admitted they were responsible for this. They tried to make people believe they hacked the actual distribution DSes for Darkrai, though it is pretty obvious how they really accomplished it: They modified a dumped ROM of an American Deoxys distribution cartridge and ran it on a flash cart.
Something similar must have happened today at NWS.
So this must have been done by someone who is familiar with all this hacking stuff, and that's why my guess is it was someone from the people invovled with pokesav.

I do wonder where Fenzo supposedly got the image of the real flier from. Anyone have an idea? It's probably not the e-mail newsletter though, because it has a little different layout and text formatting than the flier.

I find it hilarious that someone not only cosplayed as a Team Rocket member, but also trasmitted a special signal whose information is viewed as disturbing. I should think that Junichi Masuda would have at least appreciated the efforts put into realizing a game plot. Kudos for the originality.

I find it sad that everyone believes this story about the evil fat (bearded) Team Rocket cosplayer. It's just that one site that makes these claims.

You find it... sad? No one here knows the guy in question, and even if some of us did, we probably wouldn't be able to recognize him under the costume. Frankly, without so much as a name to go on, it makes no difference whether it was him or someone else, unless you happen to know this person (do you?). Don't turn this into a serious business when it clearly isn't.

The Pokésav website states that the man was seen escorted by security. This is either an accurate report or an outright lie. Since I am not in the habit of conspiracy theories today, I'll stick to positive thoughts with your permission.

This made me so happy.

And regardless of whether that cosplayer was escorted out by security, he should've been, if only for that outfit.

Ah, no I don't. (Though I wish I knew someone who was there so that I could have asked him or her to take photos.) I just thought it is wrong to put blames on someone just because they stand out.

Maybe I really am a little too serious about this.
Fenzo666 putting the blame on "Bulbapedia" or one of its users for the shopped scan annoyed me and that's probably why I view this whole story pretty serious. The user who uploaded it registered just minutes before doing so.

I'll just wait for more reports from the event.

It kinda gives me a sad as a James fan that his good name is being associated with this loser. :(

What exactly makes him a loser? At least he didn't cosplay just for the sake of it without doing something of minimal originality.

Unless he really did corrupt the players' games, which I personally doubt, he didn't do anything wrong. I don't particularly feel sorry for fans who went out of their way just to get an event Pokémon they knew nothing about, either.

If this is who I think it is, he deserved everything he got plus a sitdown with Chris Hansen.

I encountered this creep today, and it's not the first time - I saw him at the 2007 DP launch party and at least one con here, and it is ridiculously obvious from his actions that he's there to get a bigger pervgasm than fanboys with May doujinshi.

He was kicked out of the event for a reason. There is little doubt in my mind that he is the Gengar culprit, because otherwise he did nothing besides act really creepy.

I'm spoiler tagging this. Contains exactly what the Gengar issue was, but is extremely offensive.

Shiny (black) Gengar
Nickname was "N*gger"
Hold item was Black Sludge
Moveset: Snatch/Thief/Sucker Punch/Sludge Bomb
Ability was Truant
Also was caught at "Lovely Place"

That changes my outlook on the situation, which is a pity.

What did the Wonder Card say?

According to Supakitsune on #bulbagarden, it had the URL of a shock site.

He makes both hackers and adult Pokemon fans look bad.

Oh goodness, the look he's giving that little girl is just...

The worst thing of all is that this is what everyone will remember the Pokemon Platinum launch for.

Bastard.

I'm reminded of when James said "We're BAD, not INSENSITIVE!" Also come on, if you want to spread the Rocket word, at least pass along a hacked Red Gyarados.

Although seriously you guys, what the guy *did* should stand on its own. What he looks like is immaterial--it shouldn't matter if he looks like young Marlon Brando or...well...old Marlon Brando.
