So I'm playing Omega Ruby all normal like. I have my main team resting in my battle box and my "B Team" is taking the lead. One such member is Hariyama. (Sumo Wrestling pokemon) I always like the way this guy looks... Anyway, I come across a body of water that needs some surfin'.

Realize my gyrados is on "A Team".
Realize I have no water types.

Just happen to check if anyone else could by off chance learn Surf.

Last pokemon I expect is Hariyama.

Hariyama is ABLE!

what??

Who would have thought....a sumo wrestling pokemon who weights 559lbs, can surf...

What are some of your unexpected HM/TM skills that you didn't think a pokemon would logically be able to learn?

I find odd Crobat and Gyarados dont learn fly.

I think hariyama and makuhita learning surf is supposed to be a reference to the fact that they are the signature Pokemon of barely, who enjoys surfing in his spare time.

Or, you know, it's just a random BS excuse.

If you think that's odd Rhyperior can learn surf despite being heavier and so weak to water it can be defeated by having bubbles blown at it, Solid Rock be damned.

Water types like Gyarados and Slowbro learning Flamethrower was a surprise for me. Hell they even did it in the anime when that evil general guy's Shedinja was roasted by Misty's Gyarados because it had Flamethrower. The surprised look on his face was probably not too different from the average kid finding out the first time.

Emboar learning Scald is also a surprise since Fire types typically don't learn Water type moves.

A lot of weird TM/HM combos come mostly from Surf. The one that I really remember is Rampardos. Does that thing really look like it could swim, let alone ferry a kid across an ocean?

Squirtle and Aura Sphere. I get the whole "Mega Blastoise needs actual moves for its new ability," but still. Dark Pulse for that matter too...

Charmander and it's level-up Metal Claw in FR/LG. Blatant pandering to the fan base to give what was originally screwed a measurable counter.

Whilst it's probably a glitch, Beheyem and Steel Wing.

Nidoking and Nidoqueen's movepools in general. I mean, its the only thing that makes them good, since their stats kind of blow, but what the hell is up with them? It's almost as wide a movepool as Normal types!

Delibird learns Fly. The Pokémon based on a group of flightless birds. And then there's all the Pokémon with Insomnia that learn Rest.

Doduo and Dodrio are the same. Three tiny tail feathers do not cut it for being able to fly. That said, I find the second stage animation of Dodrio's Fly hilarious, so I'm okay with it. :)

On a different note, I think there are too many Pokémon that can learn Stealth Rock. Sticky Web, Spikes, Toxic Spikes, etc. aren't nearly as diverse in terms of who can learn them.

And then we have Cryogonal and Attract...

It's not a TM anymore, but when it was, the Abra line could learn Iron Tail. The first two I can understand, but Alakazam? He loses that tail when he evolves, yet he can still learn Iron Tail? How... does that work? D=

Wooper can learn Ice Punch. Because who needs fists to punch stuff?

Gastly can learn various Punch moves. If a being made of gas can punch things, why would anyone even need hands to do so?
