Emerald is the perfect third version, HGSS is the perfect remake and BW2 is the perfect sequel. The best Pokémon games.

Change my mind

Well it's not like you're wrong, except Platinum is best 3rd version for me
I like Platinum a lot, and it's the game I am currently replaying. I think it's the best game outside of the Top 3. But for me, Platinum is somewhat a "poor man's Emerald". Like, it's got pretty much the same content as Emerald, but a worse version of it...
  • Sinnoh Super Contest are a confusing rip-off of Hoenn's Contests
  • It has Secret Bases but only in boring underground caves, whereas Hoenn's Secret Bases are a lot more varied
  • Poffin baking is a less fun version of Berry Blending
  • Platinum has a Battle Frontier, but Emerald has a bigger and better Battle Frontier (plus Trainer Hill, as a bonus facility)

I personally prefer Platinum because imo the Sinnoh roster is vastly superior to Hoenn. That’s a detail that affects the experience hundredfold. Can’t consider a game superior to another if you don’t like the critters in it.

I consider the Hoenn roster of Pokémon to be superior (it's my favourite Pokémon roster, tied with Kanto and Johto).

I doubt HeartGold and SoulSilver could be surpassed as remakes.
ORAS are right there.

Platinum is the best third version imo, underground is one of the most fun features, sinnoh is a superior and more varied region imo and no physical/special split just makes everything before gen 4 a huge pain in the ass to play.

Well, there was also the fact that until Gen IV there were types with no good moves, like Bug.

The physical/special split is a plus, but I wouldn't personally use it as an argument for or against any game since it's just a general mechanical improvement, rather than something exclusive to Platinum.

I also certainly prefer Hoenn over Sinnoh as a region, but that's subjective xD

It might be because I played them first, but I’ve always considered Sinnoh’s contests to be more fun than Hoenn’s. To me, Hoenn contests feel almost entirely luck based and are infuriating, and I found the dress up and dancing from Sinnoh’s contests fun and helpful with mitigating that sense of “i guess i just have to do the same thing over and over until i luck out and win, because i already gave my pokemon good moves and have improved its condition to as good as i can get it”.

I thought maybe ORAS would turn me around on Hoenn contests, but it really didn’t- I think they actually took out the only thing I found fun about them, which was making Pokeblocks with the little rhythm game. Honestly, poffin making was part of the fun of Sinnoh’s contests too, I wish they’d stop cutting out fun minigames while they’re streamlining things. :/ (i know they haven’t remade sinnoh contests before, but if they cut the pokeblock minigame i doubt the poffin one would survive)

That being said, I’d still like to see contests or something with the same amount of depth as them to return- I appreciated having a side activity to do in Pokemon that felt like I could really sink some time and effort into trying to achieve success in it. I’m looking forward to seeing what they have planned for SWSH- I feel like there’s a lot of potential there.

Well there was Megahorn, but Heracross was the only bug type that could learn it xD

I get what you mean, but it is a mechanical improvement that is really influental in having fun with the games imo, because it limits the useful pokemon. Gyarados, for example, is way less fun to use imo because it can't really take advantage of its stab that well.

That's because GF turned into the "people don't have time for pokemon anymore" mood. If they try to make a good game again rather than making average games that people would buy simply because It's pokemon, I think they could do It.

Do y’all think there’s still a chance Pokémon will follow us in Sword and Shield? I know we didn’t see it at all in the trailer, but maybe they just didn’t show it off yet? I feel like it’s weird that SM/USUM had a walking/running animation for every Pokémon but most of them were never used...

I do think there's a chance for it. It would be kind of stupid if they didn't either way- the Switch can certainly handle it.

What if you meet Professor Willow in Sword and Shield at a Go Park in Galar, only the Go Park allows you to catch all Gen Pokemon from Pokemon Go, rather than just the Gen 1 Pokemon in LGPE. Might even have Willow appear in the anime.

If they didn't do it in the Let's Go games (where it made the most sense), then they certainly won't do it here, in a game that doesn't even have GO connectivity (at least, as far as we know).

Keeping my own expectations pretty low here, so I'm going to say no for now. I feel like they're using slightly different models than the ones in SM/USUM anyway so they'd have to enhance those models to fit the graphical style of the game, if that makes sense.

The Pokemon models that we've seen look the same to me, its the textures and lighting render that look different (and they're gonna have to retexture everything anyway in order for the styles to match and to get the resolution up to par (a lot of the 3DS game textures are very pixelated), unless they're planning on not programming every Pokemon into gen 8)- plus small model tweaks probably wouldn't mess up the existing animations much if at all, I feel that they could easily reuse them with minor alterations.

I still feel like following Pokemon are still kind of a long shot though- I really want them to return, so I'm staying optimistic, but Gamefreak tend to cut features that they don't feel are necessary to the experience, and the fact that we haven't seen them yet isn't a great sign. It's not impossible, but I'm trying to not get my hopes too high, even if letting myself hope at all might be kind of foolish.

It really wouldn't be too much work if they just import the animations from the Gen 7 games, after all, that's how we have many unused items from previous generations that were used before. Besides, what is the need to animate 800+ Pokemon again to follow the trainer when the walking and running animations are already made? They just need to update the textures and import the animations and there we go, following feature added.
