Official Generation I-VIII Travelog Thread

So I finally beat Nessa and Kabu. Both were cakewalks, which was both disappointing and a little amusing (it's funny to see those Gigan/Dynamaxed Pokemon go down with one hit from a non-Dynamaxed ‘mon), but that's kinda my fault. Prior to Nessa, I grinded up my team (Dottler, Drednaw, and Toxel) up to level 30, resulting in both Dottler and Toxel evolving.

Right now I'm outside Hammerlocke.

My current team is:
Lvl 34 Toxtricity ♂ (Myotoxin)
849.png

  • Nature: Rash
  • Item: Magnet
  • Moves:
    • Nuzzle
    • Shockwave
    • Toxic
    • Venoshock
Lvl 34 Drednaw ♂ (Sediment)
834.png

  • Nature: Adamant
  • Item: Hard Stone
  • Moves:
    • False Swiple/Bulldoze
    • Rock Tomb
    • Waterfall
    • Protect
Lvl 34 Orbeetle ♂ (*Gamma-ray)
826.png

  • Natuer: Bold
  • Item: Leftovers
  • Moves:
    • Bug Buzz
    • Reflect
    • Light Screen
    • Psyshock
*@CynthiaLover I really appreciate your suggestion, but ultimately I prefer Gamma-ray. Sorry about that.

Not certain what I should add to my team next. I'm considering picking up Duraludon, Dreepy, and G-Darmanitan.

Defeated Kabu in Shield last night. Evolved an Arrowkuda I caught in a Max Raid battle earlier. It took out Kabu’s Ninetales in 2 hits, but got burned by a Wil-O-Wisp, forcing me to switch out. I thought the Arcanine was going to give me problems, but I just had Mephiti use Toxic and made short work of it. Barraskewda came back to make short work of the Centiscorch.

What do you think of Toxtricity :3

I spent a lot of time looking for a G-Max Mon in the Wild Area before wanting to take on Opal. And I got my wish! I found a G-Max Sandaconda! She even has her Hidden Ability, the Egg Move Dragon Rush, the Fire Fang TM and the Drill Run TR as part of her moves, and has a Dynamax Level of 6! That's the best one I've gotten to date. She's got a Naughty nature, so those attacks are going to hurt (and they did, mind, as she KOed 3 Mons during the Max Raid Battle, which was cutting it close) and is at Level 40, which is just around the level most of my other Mons are at. I swapped out Runerigas for her, as now I have a G-Max Mon of my own that isn't the event Meowth. I'll need to boost up her affection (which isn't as quick or easy in this game as past ones), but I'm very happy with her. Her name, however, I'm not too happy with. I named her Dusty, as I was drawing a blank at the time, but I want a better name for her. Any suggestions would be great. Anyway, next up is my battle with Opal after my Switch recharges (I know I can just use it in docked mode, but I'm taking a break for lunch soon, so I'm gonna let it rest for a bit). My current team is as followed:

Blitz the Cinderace (male, Lv44)
Skyla the Corviknight (female, Lv42)
Baxter the Boltund (male, Lv43)
Torpedofang the Barraskewda (feamle, Lv40)
Gustav the Sirfetch'd (male, Lv41)
Dusty the G-Max Sandaconda (feamle, Lv40)

Ehh, it's not entirely Farfetch'd. Both Ponyta's and Hatenna's final forms are part Fairy, and that's half his team at that point in the game. And, remember, not all fairies in lore are nice creatures, so a jerkish Fairy user is plausible, and in-character with fairy nature lore-wise. Just FYI.

True, this Gen introduced some fairies that are not exactly nice (like the Impidimp line), but I still feel like it would’ve been better if Bede had stayed a Psychic-type specialist, and then in a surprise twist Opal’s successor turned out to be teenage Lillie.

That’s something else that I was expecting we’d see more of, cameos of past characters.

What do you think of Toxtricity :3

I saw Toxtricity before I got the game, and I was kinda disappointed as I was hoping for a more animalistic evolution for Toxel. However, Toxtricity has really grown on me. I just don't like it in Camp though; this is probably going to sound weird but the poses and expressions the Amped form makes comes across as almost flirtatious...

What about the fossils?

What about the fossils?

I like the idea behind them--it's really unique and creative--but I feel it fails in its execution, and we don't get to see their original forms to boot. I prefer the Vish fossils to the Draco ones.

Time for the next update.

I finally fought Opal. Total cakewalk, as Blitz, Dusty, and especially Skyla utterly destroyed her. As for the quiz, I got I think 5 out of 6 right (the color question got the better of me there), but, overall, a quick and easy fight. Even her G-Max Alcreamie was nuked by a single Max Move Steel Wing from Skyla. Did the next bit of story and, I have to say, that woman's obsession with pink is starting to freak me out, especially how fast she moved when she met Bede. But, hey, at least karma bit him good. Took a moment to buy out all of the TMs from the 3rd Pokemon Center (yes, I had that much money), giving Blitz Fire Fang and Baxter Thunder Fang (the latter of which feeds off his Tough Jaws ability better than Spark). Fought Hop again. Looks like he's still rotating around his teammates, bar his Starter. Well, at least he's being creative, even though I'm mowing him down like it's child's play. He seems to still be trying to figure out what to do. At least it means he's getting good character development. Looks like Bede was useful for something after all. Anyway, went through the next few areas, catching whatever I hadn't caught at that point until I came to the next town.

This Gym was where Dusty really got to shine. She and Gustav were the MVPs of this Gym. The trap challenge wasn't too bad, though I got twitchy-fingered at certain points, falling into the pits. The only exception being the sandstorm-like area, where I took it really slowly. Then came the battle itself. Totally one-sided. Gustav took down two of his team (Barbaricle and Stonjourner), even managing to survive a would-be KO due to affection level, while Torpedojaw sank Shuckle. Then it came down to Dusty VS Coalossal. Two G-Max Mons, face-to-face, sand-to-rock, scale-to-coal, who would win? Easy. Dusty. One G-Max Sandblast (which also scored a crit in the process) and the battle was done like dinner. Got my rewards, did some story stuff, and fought Hop again. Looks like he's back to his original team, with the added newbie being Snorlax. Still, pretty much mowed him down, especially since my team is starting to get pretty overleveled due to all the captures I've made lately, especially Blitz, who broke past the Lv50 mark shortly after Opal's battle. And called it quits for now, especially since my dad will be surfacing soon to do certain events with me (mostly still looking for a new car, since we STILL only have one between us). That's all for now, folks.

Now that I see people mentioning Opal's quizzes, do you have to face trainers if you fail them? I'm asking because I want to know if I should fail the quizzes on purpose like I always do in Pokémon (since that means more trainers).

Finally made it through Glimwood Tangle. What an amazing forest that is... it feels genuinely menacing but wonderous.

Very pleased to encounter a wild Morgrem and managed to catch it. Ponyta too.

Allister has been my hardest gym battle so far, Cursola took a major chunk out of me I was surprised at how bulky it is. Bede truly is unbearably obnoxious.

I adore Inteleon. The animation for Snipe Shot is amazing.

Current team:
Inteleon
Toxtricity
Corvisquire
Morgrem
Ponyta
Vibrava

So, today, we took on Kabu. I thought it was cute how I fluffed my hair up right before the battle. I also really liked that he ran out onto the gym with me. I challenged him once with the intent to lose and just see what his team was and their levels. My jaw dropped when I saw that he had Ninetales and Arcanine, two tough, fully evolved Pokemon. Then, he whips out a freaking Gigantamax Centiskorch. First of all, I though his ace was going to be Carkoal after our first meeting with him. But he whips out, not only a completely different Pokemon, but one that Gigantamaxes?! I seriously didn't expect to see a gym leader Gigantmax so early. Now I wonder what I'll see from the other leaders.

So, after I lost I did some Max Raid battles to win some rare candies to level up my team. I also bought a Round TM to teach my Milcrey, Red Velvet. She was my secret weapon to beat Kabu. My plan was to have my other team members take down the first two dogs; my Raboot, Irene, took down Ninetales after a Quick Attack war, and the Theivul, White Fox, who I'm still carrying around took down Arcanine rather easily with some Nasty Plot boosted Snarls.

Then came out G-Centiskorch. I send out Red Velvet for my most successful G-Max battle so far (and also the lamest). I basically had Red Velvet use Max Guard to protect herself first, then use Max Strike to lower Centiskorches speed. The G-Max Centiferno nearly killed Red Velvet, but she barely survived and was able to get in another Max Guard to stay alive, even with the Fire Spin damage. Since she was trapped, I couldn't swap her out, so she wen down. I basically sent out other mons as fodder to chip away at Centiskorch and heal Red Velvet to engage in part two of my plan. (I unfortunately forgot to by extra healing items so all I had was 1 regular potion, but several revives thankfully. I sent out a Vullaby I happened to catch while leveling up with Max Raid battles. I used Tailwind to give us some extra speed. Then sent out Red Velvet to use Attract and Sweet Kiss while she was faster. Then I had to use Round to keep wearing him down. He was stopped by Infatuation like 3 times and hurt himself in confusion as the final blow to give us the victory. That was easily the best gym battle so far.

After that, Hop and I headed to Hammerlocke. While there I was able to finally evolve Red Velvet into Alcremie after picking up the Strawberry Sweet in the City. I would have preferred a Love Sweet topping, but sadly, I was never able to get one in the Cafe Battles. It's fine though, I like the Strawberry topping. For the flavor, I made her Ruby Swirl. I'm actually kind of glad that I was only just able to evolve her; it was a great reward for her victory against Kabu. But that's not all; Seulgi evolved into Appletun after I got the Sweet Apple from the lover boy in Hammerlocke. I seriously cannot believe how small she is. I just thought Appletun was gonna be this huge af beast, but she's pretty much the same size as Red Velvet and Irene. They're so cute in camp though. I'll have to make them some curry soon.

I'm glad to finally get to a new boutique, so I had to update my clothes. I do have to say though, I'm getting really upset. Three boutiques so far and none have had new dresses. What the heck is their deal? It's been years since we've had new dresses in main games, and they're making me wait so long to be able to buy any. Are there even going to be any for sale before I beat the game?! I was tired of the default dress, as much as I like it, so I bought a new sweater, which I think is Impidimp themed and a matching miniskirt and jacket which are Gengar themed, and some ribbon socks. I would have liked to buy new shoes...but this one didn't have any either. It's kind of annoying because I like a lot of the clothes here, but the distribution of them across the stores is horrible. Anyway, I updated my League Card after I got together my new look.

I was disappointed to hear that Hop lost to mono-Psychic boy Bede. But not only that, I was really surprised to see that he lost to a random Team Yell Grunt. Naturally, I just expected he'd win, so seeing him dejected after I'd won was a shock. I liked that he actually felt down from Bede's words, mainly because he doesn't want Leon to get a bad rep, and seems to be starting to lose confidence in himself. I find that interesting since that's one of his major traits. Then I battled him in Stow-on-Side and was shook to see that he changed his entire team! I was literally getting read for the battle thinking, who does he send out first? Wooloo right? Only to see Cramorant. And I'm like, oh he caught a new Pokemon. The he used Toxel. Then Silcobra, and I was like, whoa, he changed his entire team. I legit did not expect that. He literally swapped out his partner Wooloo! I was so shook. That loss to Bede really had an impact on him, and that is really interesting to see. I'm very interested in seeing what happens with him next.

I was able to do a fair wee bit in Shield today, definitely great to finally be able to sink my teeth into it.

I spent a good bit of the morning exploring the wild area, doing some raids and hunting for items. I didn't think the XS and S Experience Candies would give as much experience as they did, so my Scorbunny went from Level 13 to a Level 20 Raboot in about 3 seconds. Wish I hadn't done it, but it had been too long since I had saved. So I used the rest of the candies to get Yamper up to a similar level and carried on. Everything evened out relatively quickly, so I didn't really mind.

The opening ceremony for the League Challenge was amazing, made me super excited and I didn't actually realised how much I missed a Pokemon game just being about just that. I remember being 10 and playing Red and loving just the idea of taking on the Gyms just because it was the done thing, because it was about the journey and the challenge. I didn't realise until now how out of touch with that recent entries in the series have been. As of this post, I'm only just by Kabu and I love that the Gym Challenge is front and centre of the story and not just a progression tool (which is how it has felt to me in recent years).

Anyways, Milo was super easy to defeat and I evolved my Yamper into Bolthund. I've said it before, I loved Bolthund because it kind of looks like my dog Lola and, from the leaks, I knew right away I needed her on my team for that reason. What I didn't know (and this is just an adorable and "meant to be" bonus) is that, as a part of Bolthund's animation, when she attacks, there is a line of hair along her spine to her tail that stands on end (presumably because of the electricity running through her fur). Lola is the only dog I have ever seen with the hackles up and it is so similar to Bolthunds animation it made me fall in love all over again.

However, again I digress. I was really surprised by how short a time there was between Milo and Nessa's Gyms. Naturally, with Bolthund, I defeated Nessa quite easily. Moving on through to the third Gym, I added Applin and Hatenna to my team. I also have Toxel, but I don't think I'm going to keep it. I love it, but I already have an Electric type, so I might use it in my eventual Sword playthrough.
Kabu, I actually found really tough. At the time of battle, my team was Raboot, Bolthund, Hatenna, Applin, Toxel and Kirlia (all about Level 28-30, with the exception of Applin who was only 20). I was banking on Raboot and Double Kick because I was sure his ace would be the Rolycoly evolution. Centiskorch absolutely decimated my team and I barely got by with Kirlia just surviving to see me through. I can't remember the last time I really struggled in a Gym Battle in any of the games.
I then made a quick dash to Hammerlocke so I could evolve Applin into Appletun, and now I'm off to explore the Wild Area some more and fill out a bit of the Pokedex.

So I just arrived in Spikemuth....and something about it seems awfully familiar.

Locked up so nobody can get in? Check!
Full of evil team grunts? Check!
Dark and Grimey vibe? Check!

It's Po Town 2.0.

Up until now I thought Team Yell seeming like the second coming of Team Skull was coincidence but now it kinda seems like they just said "well if it ain't broke don't fix it!" when they were brainstorming.

Raven (Inteleon) Lv 47
Senzei (Centiskorch) Lv 47
Mollie (Appletun) Lv 49
Luci (Grimmsnarl) Lv 47
Cuppa Jo (Polteageist) Lv 47
Kimura (Grapploct) Lv 47

Melony wasn't too hard to defeat thanks to Centiskorch and Grapploct, her gym challenge was more annoying though.

Now that I see people mentioning Opal's quizzes, do you have to face trainers if you fail them? I'm asking because I want to know if I should fail the quizzes on purpose like I always do in Pokémon (since that means more trainers).

No. Getting the quiz right or wrong causes your Mons to either get a stat boost (right) or stat drop (wrong), though it seems to be a different stat each time (ie: getting quiz #1 right gives you a +1 in Attack/Sp Atk, while getting quiz #2 right gives you a +1 Speed). So, missing a quiz answer isn't "game over", but it does weaken your Mons, as the quiz is given during the battle itself, and you don't need to do the quiz over again, either. The quizzes don't do any real "harm" other than a brief stat change, so getting them right/wrong is pretty meaningless, especially since they're pretty heavy on the trivia side (ie: What is Opal's preferred breakfast food? Omelets). So, no worries about getting the stuff right or wrong, as it doesn't do any real harm to the challenge, but it can make some fights easier. Hope that helps.

Oh well, at least I don't have to pretend to be dumb to fight everyone like I had to do in the other games.

Last night I got to the city where Bea is; I added a Silicobra, Dune, to my team and evolved it to a Sandaconda.

Today I fought Bea. She was the toughest out of all the gym leaders I have faced. I managed to get rid of her Hitmontop super easily with my Orbeetle, however her Pangoro threw me for a loop. I figured Orbeetle would be defeated by one Dark move, so I decided to set up a Reflect rather than risk damage on another one of my Pokemon. However, my Orbeetle lived a critical hit Night Slash from Pangoro, no doubt due to the screen so I switched to my Sandaconda. I beat her Pangoro and Sirfetch'd using a combination of Glare and Drill Run. When she sent out Machamp, I figured Orbeetle would be unable to survive a blow from it considering it was low in health (though not in the red) so I sacrificed my Sandaconda. It managed to get off a Glare and a Drill Run before being beaten by a second Chi Strike. When I sent out Orbeetle, her Machamp reverted to its original form and I picked it off with a Psychic.

Just took down Nessa and got my second Badge. My team is currently:
Optima (F/Thwackey) level 25
Rook (F/Corvisquire) level 24
Boulder (F/Onix) level 22.

Yeah, I'm running with three Pokémon. I've got some slots open because they're going to be filled when I get to Route 8. My team is never a team without a Golett. I need one of my "kids" with me , you know.

As of right now, I just got to Mine #2. I'm hoping to clear it by tomorrow night. One step closer to Route 8...

You don't have to wait until Route 8 for Golett though; they're also in the Wild Area and can pop up near the tower with other Ghost types.

Been taking a break from the Gym Challenge to catch some more Pokemon and change my team up a bit in preparation for the last two Gyms and Champion's Cup. Taking advantage of Max Raid Battles, PokeJobs, and the ability to access my Boxes on the go to help with this.

So, no real news tonight, other than the fact that I did encounter a Gigantamax Butterfree at one point...but sadly, I failed to capture it.

Oh, and I'm also glad that they removed the area evolutions for certain Pokémon, meaning that I've now got myself a Vikavolt with a Thunder Stone I had sitting in my inventory.
