I always thought Cynthia had pretty good odds as the first champion with a more expansive role, and with BD/SP she must have felt like an obvious choice.

Lance, of course, has the power of Kanto.

I believe the only anime champions left are Stiven and Diantha. I wouldn't have high hopes of them showing up

There is absolutely no reason to believe it would. And double duty in what regard? Voice acting? These game adaptations never have characters share voices with their anime counterparts.

Maybe that's why, unlike all of Ash's other colleagues from Alola, Lillie still not appeared in Pokémon Journey. Double Duty Syndrome.

Lillie will never come back because that would entail having her reunite with Mohn. That's her only goal in life, so such an outcome would have existential consequences.

Serena is not much different. Her career is a means to an end, so Ash being relatively indifferent to her progress would shatter her. Think Ash and Dawn, except Serena wouldn't shrug it off.

Iris got to return for the novelty of a young companion becoming a champion, and Ash got to strike his ego in the process. The rest of the Alola cast were harmless enough and Kiawe sort of helped Go. Dawn? Project Piplup. Chloe got more out of her recent episode.

Her career is a means to an end, so Ash being relatively indifferent to her progress would shatter her.

Serena's progress as a character largely revolved around her becoming more independent and proactive, and her reasons for having a crush on Ash have even developed into becoming less shallow over time. Ash being indifferent to her progress wouldn't shatter because not only does her life not revolve around him, but she also considers him as a friend as well. And why would Ash be indifferent to her progress in the first place? He cares about all of his friends and would most certainly be impressed by Serena's growth.

If you think Serena's career was meant to impress Ash, then I don't think you understood her character arc.

I don't think that really counts for either of them when they're going to be based on their video game counterparts, not how they are in the anime. Not to mention Serena didn't really do anything in her Evolutions cameo.

Lillie in Pokémon Evolutions, Serena in Pokémon Evolutions. What's the difference?

They aren't the same characters from the main anime. They are based on their video game counterparts since Evolutions is more interested in retelling events from the games. If people like XY Serena or SM Lillie, then they aren't going to find them in Evolutions.
