The Old Man Glitch stores your name in the memory containing grass Pokemon.
You can then surf the Cinnabar shore to catch the Pokemon designated by your name.
But since you only have one name, and most likely one of the default names, this limits the Pokemon you can catch this way.
Now, looking at the Pokemon Red disassembly, what actually happens is that it stores your name in the spot reserved for your opponent's name in a link battle.

Guess what else is stored in the location for your opponents name in a link battle? Your opponents name!
So if you could enter a link battle and then fly to Cinnabar...
Well, there's a glitch for that.
It's called the Cable Club escape glitch.
It works by either blacking out due to poison or by getting paged by the Safari Zone.
You can then surf at Cinnabar and change box in Bill's PC to save the game.
