Right now I'm against Ash's journey ending because I'm greedy, and want a grandiose conclusion.
A reason why people say they can't replace Ash is because of Pikachu. The obvious counter argument is the new main character a different Pikachu. Personally I think it would be amusing to have a main character who is resistant towards the idea of being paired with the mascot in the same way as Ash. Here are a few scenarios.
MC: In just one day I'll be able to get insert starter here and start my journey!
MC's father: Hey Main character kun. I need you to run an errand take this Pikachu, and start your journey early.
MC: I don't wanna Pikachu
MC's father: C'mon chicks dig Pikachu
MC: I'm ten
MC's father: Just do the errand punk
Random Character: Hey you have a Pikachu you should have him ride your shoulder just like Ash's
MC: I'd rather not
Pikachu refuses to get in it's ball for the rest of the series
MC: WHY DID HAVE TO SAY THAT!?
Random trainer: I know you. You're Pikachu guy with the Pikachu on his shoulder. What's up Pikachu Guy?
MC: I have other Pokémon you know
In the generic hero's split up a reconcile at the end of episode episode:
Rival: Pikachu guy. Where is your Pikachu?
MC: We got in an argument and I released him. It's unfortunate but, not all partnerships work out.
Rival: YOU WHAT!? Your only redeeming quality was embracing being Pikachu guy! Now you are lower than diiirt!
MC: Are you kidding me!?!?
