That problem also existed with Contests; the writers simply tacked on the battle round. Granted, they eventually found a way to make the battles seem connected to the appeals, but that wasn't always the case.

It has occurred to me that Iris may promote the High Link feature where players complete various missions. Now, the in-game missions revealed up till now all have to with items, but the anime wouldn't have to be faithful in that regard.

Some of the missions are just normal battles, so if nothing more Iris' quest could have her compete with strangers, which is something that Ash rarely does. Furthermore, she could also find random partners for tag battles. Finally, the missions could have Iris actively stop Team Plasma, rather than accidentally bump into them on her merry way to the next town.
That actually sounds more interesting than contests and fits her wild personality better.

The High Link missions do sound pretty interesting. I don't know how the writers can expand that (it seems like that could be taken care in one episode tbh), but if the writers can do something about High Link missions, I wouldn't mind.

Iris should also have her Pokémon use HMs to help her get to her destinations more easily. At some point she won't be able to traverse jungles completely by herself.

Well I can't see Iris being introduced just for her to be background material.

I think we all expect Iris to get Dawn's level of screentime.

I think the partners will get at least the same amount of screentime that Dawn got in this season, mostly because they've been promoting them so much and haven't even shown Ash except for in the beta art sketch.

^ Yeah, I hope with Dento being the game character as well as his promotion along with Iris in the previews and posters...he'd have more development and screentime than Brock did in AG and D/P.

Do you think it's possible that the appeals can simply be choreographed to music in order to incorporate the musical of the new pokemon games? Because that would be really easy for the writers and it could be funner if every contests we have music that goes with it.

YES!!! :yahoo: That would be perfect. That way we keep contests and the writers can say they threw in the new stuff.

That's what I've been thinking if they ever want to implement musicals. Just stick them in with the current contests we have now.

We still have to figure out Iris' interest and goals. We know Dento checks for trainers' compatibilities with their pokemon and he offers advice, but we don't know a think about Iris to suggest some sort of goal. And we don't even know if that's all Dento will do in the anime. So we'll see what happens with that.

I don't think the writers will allow Iris/Dento to fall into the same trap Misty/Brock did.

If they're going to introduce two new characters, they'll probably give them lots of screentime and won't ignore/neglect them like what happened to Brock and Misty.

I dunno.... maybe having Iris and Dento just along for the ride wouldn't be so bad. It's been two series since we've had Ash as the only proactive goal-oriented main character. I'd say the success of their written characteristics would depend on if they can make them (Iris and Dento) appealing without relying on gimmicky stuff.

This is a 200 ep series. Why do you want to sit through an arc with two characters doing nothing?

Remember the Johto saga? If Misty or Brock had a goal, Johto wouldn't have been anywhere near as boring as it was.

Well, Johto was plagued by more than just boring decision in character choices, but that's for another discussion.

All they need to do is play it smart. Why make it 200 episodes? Why not try 100 episodes and then make a character swap? Why not reintroduce old characters? Why not have the focus be on villains? Why not do this? Why not do that? This is their chance to change it up. Series restarts only come once in a while.

But that's getting off point a little. Yeah, I don't want them to pussyfoot with these characters and not have them do uninteresting things. But at the same time, I don't feel like they need to have tacked on goals or missions just for the sake of having one. For instance, people keep bring up the musicals as a possible "quest". That doesn't sound like something I'd want to sit through for 200 episodes.

EDIT: So that's why I said the measure of how well they write the characters will be if they can pull off cool/interesting/lovable characters without relying on an arbitrary "I want to be the best _____ in the world" aspiration.

I agree that I prefer a shorter arc this time. I don't want to sit through another 200 ep arc like DP was.

BW should be about 130 eps, like Hoenn was, and save the extra time for something new, like Elite 4 matches.

I definately dont want to see another 180 or so eps. Wrap it up in 120 or so. and please let ash win the league for once.

And no more birds like swellow and staraptor, ash has enough of those.

Does anyone know when the evolutions of the new starters will be revealed??

Yeah, Swellow was to make-up for Pidgeot being released, but Staraptor was redundant.

Gliscor could have functioned as Sinnoh's flying type anyway for Ash.

well i dont see Gliscor as a flying type or a ground type, just a pokemon with good variety of attacks. But yeah Staraptor was too repititive. Noctowl is unique because of its psychic powers though.

I'd like to see the final evolutions of the new starters before deciding which one of the starters i'd like ash to get.

Well hold on each bird had something unique to offer Ash that he still has. Noctowl has Psychic abilities, Swellow has incerdible endurance, and Staraptor has great close range fighting skills because of Close Combat. Each bird stands out in some way I'm just wondering how they will make this pigeon stand out.
