Stephen Lawson could barely keep his hands from shaking in excitement. Just under fifteen minutes ago, the timer on the PAO website had run down to zero: the beta test was officially live! As soon as that had happened, he had plugged in his brand new NerveGear into his PC to download the PAO client to his device--which, as the NerveGear chimed, had just finished.

Shutting off his PC's monitor, he disconnected the helmet and walked over to his bed, slipping the NerveGear on as he lay down. PAO was the only game on the device--after all, it was the first real AAA title on the system--and he instantly selected it with a voice command. The logos of the game's developers flashed on screen (the familiar Nintendo and Game Freak logos, followed by ARGUS, the company that had developed the NerveGear), before a series of system checks flashed by, confirming the mental uplink to the NerveGear's systems was complete. The words 'LINK START' appeared on screen, and Stephen felt the oddest sensation of falling, as his perception of the his bed and the world around him vanished.

He found himself floating in a blank white void. "Welcome to Pokemon Adventures Online!" a perky, synthetic voice echoed around him. "This is the character customization menu." A holographic interface popped up before him, showing off his avatar's face. "Please press 'CONFIRM' when your avatar is complete." Stephen shrugged to himself. The process was straightforward enough.

He was a bit lazy when it came to this part of RPGs, and simply cycled through the presets until he found one that resembled his actual appearance. A little narrowing of the nose, higher cheekbones, and a pointier chin... There! But he frowned when he realized that it seemed a little.. plain. Shrugging again, he changed his hair color to an eye-catching pale blue, adjusted the eye color to match, and tapped the 'CONFIRM' button in the bottom corner.

Likewise, he hurried through the wardrobe customization--which featured all sorts of outfits from the series; he'd settled on an ensemble resembling the Generation V protagonist--and reached the final character creation screen. He carefully typed in the same handle he used for all his MMOs--Cy Ren, a pun he'd come up with for a GTA ripoff--and chose Healer as his class. But he paused when he came to the final option: his starter. Obviously, as PAO was a throwback to the first five generations, there would only be the first 649 Pokemon. And his starter could come from an even smaller number of those. Stephen chewed on his lip, wondering what would be best.

He shrugged a third time, before deciding on Swinub. Ice types were always cool--as he joked to the groans of his friends--and Mamoswine was simply awesome. This time, the button at the bottom of the screen simply said 'GO.' When he tapped it, his senses vanished for a moment, and was filled with the oddest feeling of intense vertigo.

When the world stopped spinning--not that he could actually see or feel it--Stephen's jaw dropped open as he found himself in Pallet City.

Nothing he'd read on the internet could prepare him for this experience. It was like he'd stepped into a perfect recreation of the starting city from the Scarlet and Azure remakes of red and blue. True, it still looked a bit like a video game--things were a bit too smooth and perfect, looking too closely at things revealed their CGI nature, and loose clothing and hair still didn't swing properly--but still, everything looked far close to reality than he'd expected or imagined.

Behind him was the New Oak Laboratory, which had evidently been designated the starter area of the game, as other players materialized nearby. Before him were the homes of the outer suburbs, some inhabited by NPCs, others empty with glowing 'For Sale' signs in front. And beyond all that were the taller buildings of the city center.

That was when Stephen finally noticed the weight on his built and in his pocket. When he looked down, he noticed the Poke Ball hanging on his belt. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out PAO's iteration of the Pokedex. Finally managing to shut his mouth, he managed a low whistle. "This is going to be completely and totally awesome."

OOC: And here we go! So sorry this took so long to post; the forums completely borked out on me last night after I posted in the sign-up thread :-(.

Sandy Luck opened her laptop and watched the timer go off. She took the cord of the NerveGear and plugged it into the computer. It downloaded the software in about twenty minutes, a time which she spent reading more of the manual. Then her computer said the download was done, and she had to create her username and avatar. She typed "Flaming Star" as her username, just because it seemed interesting and she couldn't think of anything else. She decided to make it a bit taller than her, and have dark blur eyes. She kept her hair the same color, but made it a little neater than her real hair. She decided the wear a dark blue coat and jeans with a black T-shirt and a hat, because that was what all stereotypical pokemon trainers wore in the games, wasn't it, a hat.
Trainer class? She decided on Whisperer. She thought it might be interesting to be able to talk to a pokemon, and was curious about how good the AIs were, seeing as she figured a lot of the humans would be staff members in NerveGear, but the pokemon would likely be AIs. That was what she thought was likely, anyway.
Second, she had to choose her starter pokemon. This program offered a lot more than the fifteen game starters- it let her choose from many other basic pokemon as well. She scrolled through the list. Riolu. She quite liked Riolu, and it was Fighting type, which had many advantages.
Following the instructions that now appeared as a result of the completed character-creation, she put on the helmet, unplugged it, and went to lay down in bed.

A moment later, she was in Pallet Town. She wasn't looking at the place from overhead, controlling a character. She was the character, and the buildings were life-size and right near her. She saw what she remembered was Oak's lab, and some other houses and the path with the Tall Grass that Professor Oak would always stop people form going into without pokemon.
Sandy also saw a boy standing nearby. She wondered suddenly if there was lag or something.

Timothy Burns had been waiting for this for a long time. A fully-interactive Pokémon gaming experience--who could pass that up? It would give him a chance to go on an adventure without technically leaving suburbia--every gaming nerd's dream. He had just loaded up the physical characteristics for his avatar. It looked a lot like he might in five years.
Name: DracoMan. Hardly anyone would believe that one as shy as he would have such a love for dragons.
Starter: Charmander. For obvious reasons.
Trainer Type: Battler. Somehow it seemed appropriate.
All bases covered. Only one thing left. With a mixture of excitement and anxiety, he put on the virtual helmet and switched it on. Beam me up, Scotty.

One LSD trip later...

Is this it? he thought when he opened his eyes and saw the world he'd beamed into. It looked like an idyllic version of suburbia: houses near wide-open expanses, blue-and-white sky. It looked so real, and to him (or at least his avi), it probably was real. So awestruck was he that he failed to notice the other two who had preceded him.

"Common! Common! Let me in already. Ooo I'm so excited. Hurry up already." Oliver says in front of his computer very impatiently.
Oliver bounced in his seat as the download hit 90%. He was a minute away or so from experiencing the best experience he will ever have it is entire life. Finally, the download hit 100% and Oliver blinked but did not see his computer in front of him. One second he was at his computer, the next he was outside in front of a building. He seemed confused at first but figured out that he was in Pallet Town in front of Oak's lab.
"Yepie!" Oliver screamed out in his new clothes.
He was going to get his first pokemon. He knew what he signed up for so he wondered if the game created his own personal story line so that he got his Cyndaquil. He didn't wonder for long, as Oliver made his way inside the lab.

Aqua's eyes lit up as the computer pinged. The NerveGear had downloaded PAO and she was ready. She slipped it on, and smiled. Suddenly her surroundings changed as she voice selected PAO and created her character. She made her hair brown and in a bob, a brown silk dress, a pearl necklace and brown flats. She was sent to the starter selection screen. She entered the Pokémon Eevee-always her favorite. Then she entered her name- Evie Lution-CLASSIC pun, and chose the catcher ability. She felt herself dropping into another world just seconds later, and landed in Pallet Town, right in front of Oak's lab. Suddenly, she noticed others. She decided to say hello. "So, um...hi."

"Hey," Sandy greeted the girl who had said hi. "This NerveGear thing... works pretty well, huh? Feels like I'm actually here. It's weird to think I'm not..."

Tim wasn't yet sure what to do. He knew at some point , they were going to get their starter Pokémon, but he had no idea when. Everyone else seemed to just be standing around talking, and it might've been appropriate for him to get in on it. Unfortunately, he had no idea how. Especially since two of them were girls, and an al dente noodle had a better chance of breaking the ice. For a moment, he wondered if he could pass off his noninteractivity with everyone as an effect of the LSD trip that had brought him here. At any rate, he couldn't think of anything else to do but stand there and wait for...however long it would take for something to happen.

"Yeah, sure does. I wonder how we actually remember to come out of the game..." Evie questioned, not knowing. She knocked on Professor Oak's door, hoping that he had their special starters.

"Oh my god! OH MY GOD!" Elizabeth jumped up and down, fangirling everywhere. Her older sister sat in the back, watching the other in her excitement.

"...I think you should calm down..." her sister told her,

"HOW CAN I WHEN THE BETA TEST IS UP!?" Liz put herself in front of the computer screen, typing in her username and password,

"You're overreacting,"

"You're under-reacting! You were the exact same way when the Elder Scrolls Online BETA test was launched!"

"Not exactly..."
***

Liz found herself in the character creation screen, she decided to make it look as much like her as possible. She had to get the color of the eyes and hair right, find a hairstyle that's closest to her usual, get the body type to look like hers, she even had to get the round face. Now, to dress her up like a Pokemon trainer. Of course, she would need a hat and a bag, and she gave her avatar a dark blue hoodie to match her own. Just as she clicked the 'create character' button, she realized that she forgot to put the glasses on her avatar. That happens with every game she plays. She chose whisperer as her class, since the Nuzlocke challenge is made so trainers can make better bonds with their pokemon, and whisperer was a good thing for bonding. Now finally, it was time to choose her starter. There were so many that she cared for. There was Zorua, which is what got her into Pokemon, there's Absol, which has been a favorite since she saw that one movie all those years ago, there was Eevee, which was probably overused, but still a good choice. But she wanted to go back, way back. She remembered that when she used to watch some old Pokemon episodes, Ponyta and Rapidash were the ones that had stood out the most. Back then, she thought they were the coolest ones, seriously, how could you not love a unicorn horse who has fire for hair? Not only that, but in all the games she has played, her fire-types were always the strongest.

After choosing her starter, Elizabeth passed out, and woke up in pallet town, under the name of Trainer L.

"...Holy sh*t..." Trainer L muttered...
