This is a list I compiled of every signficant episode in the anime I believe to be significant from the first episode to the end of the D/P season. I have still yet to do a list of episodes where Ash reaches an important city and episodes focusing on the mythology of the pokemon world (e.g, Legendary pokemon, etc). The character development list was quite difficult to compile and may still be incomplete. I have added spoiler tags as they are quite long and seperated in different categories

This is what I have come up with so far:

Episodes where Ash wins a gym badge

Showdown In Pewter City (Boulder Badge)
The Water Flowers Of Cerulean City (Cascade Badge)

You should add that episode, as that's one that deals with the opening of the league in the same way as All Fired Up, A Claim to Flame and Like a Meowth to a Flame. That's where he registers for the league, the Oaked Pokémon are sent to him and Ash's match-up with Nando is revealed.

Otherwise, great work with this!

Grab your torches and pitchforks.

Anyway, a lot of these seem to be okay, except for a few things that may just be how I feel. 1. I wouldn't count the eps where a pokemon is caught and released in the same episode. I know people are nitpicky enough to include the fact that Ash had a Raticate for like a few minutes, or even a Beedrill for like a second or two, but I don't think these should be counted. (however, some of the eps mentioned for this are important for other reasons) 2. You left out which episodes follow a story arc, most notably the Whirl Cup arc. I will admit that most of the other story arcs don't seem to have a bearing on the story as a whole, but since you included character development, I would count it as that. I didn't look this over well enough, but I also don't think you included every episode the recurring characters appear in as well. (for the ones that do occur many times) Not to mention this includes every episode one of the evil teams (or another major antagonist) appears in. 3. Why? Just because it doesn't progress the plot doesn't mean it's not good. The only reason the label "filler" exists is so we know which episodes to skip since there's no point to them. There are a few eps that have neither of the points you or I have mentioned that are still fun to watch because they're just entertaining. This is why I've taken to calling it "bland episodes" rather than filler, since that is truly what the ones that should be skipped are. (although I do realize what people would call bland also varies) I admire your efforts, but we must stop this witch hunt NOW.

Your list is really detailed, which is an admirable effort itself. It would have been better to separate them for each of the regions. Some they were done, but not everyone of the sections got the treatment. Also, Symbols can be in the same category as Gym Badges.

Thanks for reading.

You should include all the villain team episodes. Any ep with the real Team Rocket, Magma/Aqua, Pokehunter J, or Galactic wasn't filler.

Thanks for your comment. You're right about the Whirl Cup and all the Team whatever episodes. I wasn't really sure what category to put them in but those are also non-fillers and re-curring character appearances too. I have also left out episodes where Ash reaches an important place although they would also be non-filler.

You should include all the villain team episodes. Any ep with the real Team Rocket, Magma/Aqua, Pokehunter J, or Galactic wasn't filler.

I was thinking of doing a list for that but never got round to it. There's a lot of important episodes I left out also, most I didn't know where to put.

Why isn't the BW episodes there? There are still some fillers so it wouldn't be pointless.

BW is still in its early stages and I don't know much about it to do anything yet. There's a lot of character development episodes i thibk I left out too. I just watched Turning Over a Nuzleaf earlier and noticed that in this episode, Ash's Corphish and Treecko become friends at the end after hating each other in previous episodes. Would that be considered character development?

To CliveKoopa:You did pretty much great work though i would like to point out som episodes on which you missed which i wouldnt count as fillers.
Like Whirl Cup arc as Samurott pointed out already since it was story arc focusing on Misty goal of water pokemon master. There are other story arcs like Red Gyarados,Lugia or St Anne(which was from games)which were important to actual story.
There are also some other episodes which gave character development, had recurring characters debut or were in some way important to story like:
-"Song of Jigglypuff"(recurring pokemon Jigglypuff debuted)
-"Princess vs Princess"(it look in Misty backstory and why she views winning doll collection important wanting to prove herself to sisters)
-"Pokeball Perill"(it was episode where Brock left to pursue his dream as breeder while working with prof.Ivy as well introducing GS ball)
-"Misty Meet her match"( Misty got some development in being torn between staying with Rudy or deciding to continue traveling with Ash and co having to make important decision)
-"Going Apricorn"(it expanded on Brocks abilities as breeder learning more about taking care of pokemon and preparing medicines)
"For Crying Out Loud"(while debatable im not sure if this was filler since it showed character growth from Misty side when taking care of wild Marill starting to better understand water types creating deep bond with it which helped her in career as water trainer later on)
-"Snubbull Snobbery"(recurring pokemon Snubull made debut)
-"Trouble Brewing"(recurring character Sakura made its debut)
-"Around the Whirlpool"(recurring character Elm appeared and Ash and Misty subscribed for Whirl Cup).
-"Some like it Hot"(we learned why Misty prefers water types so much)
-"Lapras of Luxury"(Ash picked up Larvitar egg which played important part in story and his Lapras returned"

Im sure i missed out some episodes though, and since i dont have enough time for all sagas i only covered original series.

Thanks for that list pokemon_fan. There's a lot of other episodes I think I left out too.

This is a very good and thorough guide, I admire how anyone could have the patience to write such a thing, but something that is quite useful all the same.
I have a suggestion, but it is a mere suggestion of having a list of all the Protagonist's Rivals' episodes, if that's not too much of a bother...

I might update this sometime but I can't be bothered with it right now.

Yeah, I was thinking of that. Gotta Catch You Later/Hoenn Alone was the big turning point of the show as it was the beginning of lots of changes. Misty leaving, Ash leaving all his pokemon at Oak's lab and the start of just Ash and Pikachu again.

Why are you signaling out "Gotta Catch Ya later?"

It was an important episode of course, but acting like it was more episode than the final episodes of the other generations is ridiculous.

"Hoenn Alone" on the other hand is a generic filler. All it is, is Ash on the boat to Hoenn.

Gotta Catch You Later sees a lot of development for Ash as well as Misty.

How is Hoenn Alone filler? You can't have Misty leaving Ash in one episode then in the next, Ash is already in Hoenn with a very sick Pikachu. That wouldn't make sense.

I think most people would agree that episodes that take place in locations from the games are non-filler as well. For example, Cream of the Croagunk Crop! introduced Crasher Wake and took place in the Great Marsh.

The problem with a list like this for the Indigo League episodes is that many of the filler episodes were highly memorable and very entertaining (Island of the Giant Pokemon, Tentacool and Tentacruel, Holiday at Acapulco). Otherwise, great job!

Two of the three eps you mentioned are not filler at all.

Anyways, that's a nice thing you did, making a whole list of non-fillers. I had been thinking about watching pokemon from OS episode 1 up to now, but I didn't want to go through all those fillers... Maybe with your guide I might just be able to do that! Thanks XD
