Maya stood up on her tippytoes, grabbing the object. She looked at it blankly for a moment, then she recognized it. It was a rag-doll her grandmother had made for her- she must have left it here the last time she visited.
Maya shook her head. "Mina was diagnosed with leukemia the day after she was born. I was made in a dish to be spare-parts for her. That's why my mother gave me a name that means hope." Maya had always felt somewhat ashamed by the unusual circumstances of her birth, so she stared at the floor as she said this, not wanting to see the look on his face.
