In the Pokemon episode Volcanic Panic, why did Charizard's feet slip backwards when battling magmar?

It was when Magmar was using the fire move and Charizard was pushing against it. Be as detailed as you cn on how it was slipping and what kind of tracks the Charizard made. What was his feet slipping in as well?

Fire attack's force is pushing him.

What?
What was his feet slipping in as well?

Magmatic rock.

Charizard VS Magmar, one of the first epic battles in Pokemon history, with an epic climax as well

Charizard coughed, eyes watering from the smoke of his and Magmar’s Flamethrowers colliding. Through the ringing in his ears, he heard his opponent’s trainer shout a command. What move was that? Something “Blast”?
The dragon realized what it was a second before the star-shaped blaze breached the smoke in front of him. Time slowed down; he could still dodge! But…in that heatwave-distorted mass of fire coming towards him, Charizard saw Magmar’s face, saw that irritating, overconfident smirk. And in that moment, he knew that he couldn’t, wouldn’t run away. He would show that bastard how strong he was, right then and there!
In a reflex that surprised even himself, Charizard threw his hands up, catching the projectile head on. But he barely had time to comprehend what he’d just done before the force of the blast started to overwhelm him, his feet beginning to slip back toward the edge of the pillar he was standing on. Grunting, he tried to dig in with his claws, but they were unable to find traction on the smooth volcanic stone, only leaving long scratches as he continued to slide. It was taking everything he had just to hold on, and he could feel his resolve waning rapidly.
And then, words of encouragement rang out behind him, loud and clear. “You can do it! Don’t give up, Charizard!”
At that call, a fire reignited in the dragon’s heart. He knew he could do this, knew he could beat that Magmar, knew that he wouldn’t let his trainer down. With newfound courage, Charizard lifted his claws up, causing his heels to slide back even faster. But just before he reached the edge, he roared and sank them back into the ground with all of his might, gouging the earth and coming to a stop. Leveraging this new grip, he gathered his last scraps of strength and heaved upwards, sending the Fire Blast careening over his head and into the horizon.
