That was only in the very, very early days of the series. He abandoned that attitude relatively quickly.

True, a series can only improve by learning from past mistakes, its certainly better now than the early days of Pokemon

I have really been wondering a lot about this. Gou catching every Pokemon will not give him enough time to bond with all of them before they go to wherever they will be stored (and even if they get rid of the 6 Pokemon concept and they aren't stored, it is still too many to give all proper attention, give attention to the Pokemon's individual goals, feed them, etc etc etc). It just doesn't seem to fit with how the anime has been portrayed throughout its history.

What keeps coming to my mind is "Team Plasma may have had a point". I feel I could defend main series Pokemon games, and even more easily can defend the anime to the Team Plasma argument (more importantly to real people that have similar misconceptions about Pokemon). I never considered Pokemon Go, because it really isn't a depiction of the Pokemon universe, it is set in our universe and I don't think it has the kind of depth to really be taken seriously. But if they adapt the Pokemon Go mentality into the normal anime and main series games, the concept of catching multiples of every Pokemon and storing them becomes really difficult to defend, and the Team Plasma base roots concept (not Ghetsis' actual goal, of course) begins to have more of a point.

I really hope they actually have Gou decide he'd rather meet every Pokemon, maybe find ways to interact with wild Pokemon, record data, take pictures, play with them, battle with them, whatever, but then only catch the ones he really bonds with and not doom the others to a life in storage. They are walking a fine line with coming across as very hypocritical depending on what they do here.

That would be some good development. Maybe have him go a little like Silver: at first he kinda objectifies his goal and pokemon, before learning that it’s kinda dickish to follow through with it.

I've been thinking about this kind of idea: what if Gou catches a team in a certain region he and Ash travel to, and then always replaces it when they move on to another region? I admit, this theory has problems too, but it's the best I personally could come up with as of now.
