Latias is too powerful for Ash to have.
Oh come on. He had a freaking Melmetal before and that's a mythical which is a side category of legendaries so how is Latias any more powerful? Not to mention that Ash has had several mons that were strong enough to beat legendaries anyways so why would him owning a Latias be off limits just because you think it's "too powerful"? Like seriously the excuses for why Ash shouldn't get Pokemon A or Pokemon B are so unoriginal now.

I don't think that they would want to make Ash OP.

Latias wouldn't necessarily be OP, but she'd certainly be a cheap addition meant to appease shippers. Also, could we stop encouraging type overlaps? Dragonite and Mimey exist.
Ash has gotten a type overlap in every region apart from Johto, Hoenn, and Alola.

Ash had Talonflame, Hawluchua, and Noivern in Kalos. And for some time in Johto, he had both Bulbasaur and Chikorita on his team. In Kanto, he had type overlap with Butterfree and Pidgeotto, and later with Pidgeotto and Charizard (let's not bring the fact Charizard was not obeying Ash into this conversation). Then there was Gliscor and Staravia / Staraptor in Sinnoh, and then the mess of a team he had in Unova, I'm not touching that one with a ten foot pole.

But most of these type overlay situations could be excused.

- Like for example Talonflame, Noivern and Hawlucha were all dual typed so they offered a 2nd type coverage other than Flying and they had different battle styles that set them apart.
- Bulbasaur and Chikorita might've been on the same team at the same time, but Ash hardly used Bulbasaur outside of a few battles against TRio and other minor skirmishes and he got rid of Bulbasaur after Jasmine's gym anyway.
- The same kind of goes for Pidgeotto since Ash got rid of him immediately after he evolved into Pidgeot, plus Charizard didn't listen to Ash any ways so even with a type overlap it didn't matter that Ash had two Flying types if one of them wasn't obedient to start with. Also Butterfree was released within the first 20 episodes so that doesn't matter either.
- Gliscor was left in training after a while so again his type overlap with Staraptor wasn't a major deal, plus despite Gliscor being half Flying it never knew any Flying type attacks so Staraptor wasn't rendered pointless by him.
- As for the reserves there's a reason they were called that since Ash kept switching them around. Other than a couple of temporary instances Ash didn't have two Pokemon of the same type on his team for very long, so the type overlap there was irrelevant.

Considering that Ash might catch a large amount of Pokemon type overlap is bound to happen and it's not a bad thing.

So only like half of the past sagas and yet there's people including you who are acting like type overlaps are bound to happen again.

And what's with this Latias is too OP thing? Why are some people ignoring that Ash had a Melmetal on his team just a short while ago and even then he still wasn't OP as a result? Or the fact that this is probably the one saga where Ash could get away with being powerful because his future opponents like Raihan, Leon and however else is in the Top 8 are going to be brutally strong?

Imo, type overlap isn't bad if the types bring something else to the table. Take Kalos as an example. Three Flying types, 2 Dragon types, however, all of them brought something different.
Talonflame: Physical Attack/Close Range
Hawlucha: Ground based/Close range
Noivern: Special attack/Long range
Goodra: Special Attack/Tanky.

What’s wrong with type overlaps as long as it brings new personalities and things on the table? We aren’t creating a competitive team here.

Johto starters are starting to appear in merchandise. I hope we will get another Johto episode soon.
Interesting, Bayleef, Quilava and Croconaw instead of the base forms. Ash owns Bayleef and Quilava. Totodile for a return and evolution.
Eevee, Steenee and Horsea are most likely Go captures and the Flygon most likely promotes the movie.

To turn the tables on Latias being too OP, let's not forget Ash's Sceptile defeated a legendary Pokemon
