Pokémon Headcanons

But ORAS is set at least 10 years before XY...

Sadly, this is true. Hoenn takes place roughly around the same time as Kanto. Continuity's a bitch, ain't it?

Giratina is actually really sweet natured just has... very jealous tendencies.
Have you not seen it in Amie?

-Donphan are often poached for their tusks.
-Clampearl is a delicacy.
-Pikachus are so popular in many regions because they are good pets.
-Skittys are all blind.
-The pokenon from the Treeko line are like jackals, they steal from villages.

Not an entirely serious one, but for some reason I find it fun to imagine that the war mentioned in XY was between Kalos and an as-yet-unseen region based on the UK, which started when the Kalosians stole Stonehenge...

I say it was between Kalos and Kanto. There was a recent war in Kanto, right? So what if they have had a history of war?

Good point, I hadn't thought about that. Although, like I said, my theory isn't really a serious one, more of a lighthearted attempt to explain the existence of Geosenge Town. I remember when I first saw the map of Kalos I thought "Why is Stonehenge here? It's not in France, it's in bloody Wiltshire!!"

Another thought - considering that rby came out in the 90's and Lt. Surge is known as the lightning American, perhaps it's a reference to Vietnam (which I guess would make Surge an ex-pat, possibly from Unova)

I don't think Vietnam; Surge looks way too young. Maybe the Gulf War.

Mew is NOT the ancestor of all Pokemon. Legendary Pokemon from the dawn of time aside, Pokemon like Porygon also can't be descended from Mew, as they are explicitly stated to be an artificial human creation.

Legendaries cannot breed the normal way (with mysterious eggs showing up out of nowhere) because they are not descendants of Mew, or any other species of Pokemon for that matter. The whole egg method was the result of mutations in DNA that led to new Pokemon species. Legendary Pokemon have not changed very much, so their breeding methods are different and unknown and don't allow them to mix with other species of Pokemon. They few that can (Manaphy) cannot produce their own species, but rather a hybrid like a Phione. (The Porygon line, as they were human creations, initially couldn't breed with other Pokemon. Eventually, they were upgraded to do so by Silph Co.)

Mewtwo is not so much a clone of Mew as it is a bioengineered creature, created by stimulating and controlling cells from a Mew, similar to how stem cells can be influenced to differentiate into just about any sort of tissue or organ. Theoretically, cells from a Mew could have been used to grow just about any sort of Pokemon, but its creators wanted a powerful, new Pokemon... Mew's genes just happened to be the best template for such a creation. The scientists were more interested in enhancing their creation's innate power, so appearances were not too important... and Mew's DNA influenced it to gain a somewhat feline look.

Ditto was a botched attempt to alter Mew's DNA so that it could breed with all of its decedents. The result was a Pokemon that retained the ability to have drastic changes in its cellular structure at any given moment (Transform), as well as the ability to breed with all normal Pokemon. However, the changes caused the Mew cells to become completely undifferentiated. As a result, it took the form of an amorphous blob of cells rather than a petite feline.

Just thought of one regarding on the pokemon Unown. That is a very special species on its own that is neither categorized as Ordinary Wild, Legendary, nor Mystical. They are just, well, special and unique.

It is not Ordinary Wild because, well very simple, they are extra-dimensional beings that live in their own dimension. If they do appear in our dimension, it is limited to ruins and never ever in the wild nature. But although they have ruins and carved writings by the ancient people to signify their existence, they are not Legendary Pokemon, because they left no significant legends or myths or folklores in the history that greatly impacted the human world, they don't even caused any impact to any of the environment, they stand aloof from the world for their entire life of existence, so what they ever left behind for us human is simply mystery. One may say there are super-rare as you can only find them in specific locations, and seldom appear right in front of people, but they are not Mystical, because they are not like Mew/Celebi/Jirachi/Manaphy/Victini where you happens to spot them by pure luck, they actually will appear at anytime if you have the ability to summon they out from their dimension, and additionally they are then always appear in super-large hordes. But how to summon them out remains a mystery.

Unown, they have the physical property of what we human defined as "pokemon" because they are catchable in pokeballs and they are living beings, but they are not the ordinary "living beings" as we would normally defined. Firstly (don't bring in the game systematical mechanics here please) they are irreproducible by any natural means; secondly they don't feed on any form of diet, nor they consume any form of energy, rather they produce energy!; and thirdly, in fact they have no personality of their own, they don't even have "individuality" defined in philosophy, they are one as all, all as one. Their behaviors are easily influenced by identities of strong minds, so may appears to be "controlled" by others when they utilized their power. The connection behind have not yet fully solved but they appears many time when other Legendary Pokemon utilize their power, they seems to associated with the Legendary Pokemon.

Unown, they are like fundamental elements of energy equivalent to chemical elements of matters and substances. When they are alone they are useless, but when large amount of them arranged in specific arrangements they produce energy of all form for all happenings, whether that is energy to attack, or energy to realize matters and lifeforms, or energy to twist the physics of the world. Some pokemon scientists even speculated that Unown is the cause of Big Bang of current universe, they are the reason of birth of Arceus, they are the chaos before the alpha.

I've amassed a lot of headcanon over the past couple of years over the General Pokeverse.
Geography, Politics, and History (Poke-Japan):
  • Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and other places form the country of Shoyo, the Pokeverse version of Japan. Her capital is Yamabuki (Saffron) City. The Japanese original names are canon for people and cities, with some exceptions. Shoyo means "Rising Sun" and is written as "昇陽".
  • Team Rocket is an ultranationalist terrorist organization, that hates the cosmopolitanism and de facto democracy of present-day Shoyo. They long to revive the Empire of Shoyo (大昇陽帝国).
  • World War II happened differently in Shoyo. As the "Meiji-era" equivalent in Shoyo happened at an earlier period, democracy in Shoyo had more time to mature. Also, the institutional cruelty to Pokémon by the Imperial Military was unpopular with the people. Just as Shoyo's ultranationalism in its central government and military was about to go out of hand, people in Hoenn/Johto/Sinnoh stood up and revolted, formed the Republican faction, and sabotaged the war effort. Thus in contrast to the top-down implementation of RL!Japan's democracy by the GHQ, Shoyo's post-War democracy was imposed and upheld in a more bottom-up approach by her Republican country-people.
Individual Cities (Poke-Japan):
  • Tamamushi/Celadon City: Until the 1920s, the area consisted of mostly smaller towns and villages. After the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, people and businesses started to move into the area for the less-crowded environment. After World War 2, the city grew even further, initially due to establishment of new prefectural departments and agencies after 1949. Further growth was achieved with the two separate prefectures further encouraging activities to move from the already-overcrowded Yamabuki. By the early 2000s, Tamamushi City has become a metropolis in its own right.
  • Yamabuki/Saffron City: Since the Tokugawa Shogunate, Yamabuki City has been the economic and de facto political centre of Shoyo. Since the Meiji era, it has also been the seat of the Imperial House, and the city would grow into one of the Pokeverse’s largest metropolitan areas. The city proper is now in a separate prefecture (District of Shoyo) since 1949, due to the newly-established democracy’s concerns with undue political power. Due to a generally aggressive decentralisation effort by both the national and metropolitan governments, however, Yamabuki is no longer the sole economic and population centre it was decades earlier.
  • Enju/Ecruteak City: While Enju is famous for its long lasting traditions in art, society, and architecture, there was a period of progressivism from the mid-19th Century. Out of the city’s sense of peril in being politically ousted by Yamabuki, Enju underwent building projects that were very ambitious and radical for its time. These included the first railway tracks from Kogane to eventually connect with Yamabuki, hydroelectric power plant on the river flowing from Lake Ikari (Lake of Rage), the first Pokemon power station inhabited by Pikachus and Magnemites, and an aqueduct bringing in fresh water through Mt Suribachi (Mt Mortar). A new district south of the rail tracks (Tokaido Main Line) was also laid out to accommodate the growing number of migrants and foreign visitors, giving a romantic Kalosian flavour that still lasts to this day. The Kalosian Second Empire located one of its consulates in said district, which it eventually replaced the former consulate in Kogane, and still caters to Kalosian nationals and Shoyoese would-be travellers today.
  • Johto Metropolitan Area (Kogane/Goldenrod-Asagi/Olivine): While many of Johto’s towns still retain their traditional Shoyoese character, Kogane and Asagi also retain their historical buildings better than Kuchiba and Yamabuki. This is due to the former two cities spared from Allied bombings during World War 2, and also because of grassroots activism focusing on preserving the cities’ built heritage. Thus while Yamabuki and Kuchiba screams out “modern and technological”, and Enju, Hiwada, and Fusube depicts the pre-Meiji traditional townscapes, Kogane and Asagi now resemble more as dignified, romantic European cities, reminding its citizens of its Meiji, Taisho, and early-Showa developments. Speaking of World War 2, the wartime republican government (which would later form the post-WWII Shoyoese government) briefly assembled in this metropolitan area, while their troops were busy fighting back loyalist forces in Kanto. A couple of government departments such as the Ministry of Economy & Industry, and the Imperial Mint still call Kogane home, while the Ministry of Cultural Heritage is still housed in Enju. They are part of a more recent results in the nation’s decentralisation efforts.
  • Kanmon Metropolitan Area: Majimina and Kanazumi/Rustboro flank the Kanmon Strait and can be accessed via the Kanmon Bridge, Kanmon Tunnel, and Shin-Kanmon Tunnel running across the strait. The two port cities form a metropolitan region that is multicultural, with visiting travellers from Korai (Korea) and Tsinguo (China).
    • Majimina is also the home for the Battle Facility, accessible for trainers that obtained all gym badges in any region in Korai, Tsinguo, or Shoyo. (The Battle Resort of ORAS does not exist in this Pokeverse version.) The Treaty of Majimina was held in circa 1895 after the 1st Tsinguo-Shoyoese War (which is the equivalent to the 1st Sino-Japanese War). Majimina is a combination of majiwaru(交わる; cross paths, interact) and minato (港; port). The city is based on Shimonoseki.
    • Kanazumi was traditionally the gateway to Hoenn. After Shoyo began her country’s modernization in the 19th Century, the city boasted many fine European-style buildings, and even saw the first steelworks in the nation.

Geography, Politics, and History (Poke-USA):
  • Unova and Orre are two of the states forming the United States of Columbia, the Pokeverse version of USA. Opelucid City is the state capital of Unova (just like how Albany is for NY), and the national capital is Washington DA, or District of America. The English dub names are canon.
  • Post-Civil War Reconstruction in Columbia ended much differently to RL!USA. While initially the southern states worked on the "divide-and-conquer" governance against both poor Whites and poor Blacks, the governed happened to be more perceptive of what was happening, and by nature, more cooperative. As such, segregation was more unpopular than in real life, and they were outlawed during the 1910s-20s. E B du Bois in this timeline was able to become the first Black Senator in Congress, and Martin Luther King became the first Black vice-President with President John F Kennedy.

Society:
  • Pokémon training in Shoyo is a combination of sports activity, civil defense as part of post-WWII fortified democracy, and traditional Japanese bushido. Everyone is encouraged to train their Pokémon, even though not everyone would partake in the league.
  • While the games/anime don't show law enforcement all that much (due to Law of Conservation), Shoyo, Columbia, and Kalos has their national defence forces, national and local police agencies, a UN-backed military organisation, and the ICPO to deal with crimes, big and small. Registered trainers are also called upon to assist the various law enforcement agencies, while registered Pokémon gyms, Elite Four, and Champions are also called upon to take part in civil defense.
  • Unlike how the real-life developed world is heavily dependent on motorization, Shoyo, Columbia, and Kalos are more reliant on rail travel. This is because of stronger environmentalism and the hostility of Pokémon against digging up fossil fuel, which in turn limits the general availability of such power source. Only Columbia has anything resembling the real-life Interstate Highway System, and even that is not as extensive.

Some Kanto headcanons: Brock is actually an ultra beast. Misty is a robot designed by Lance to rob new trainers of their will to fight with that Starmie. Surge wasn't in the military. It's basically a stage name, and he actually has a degree in accounting. Erika funds Team Rocket's Game Corner. Koga is also an ultra beast. Sabrina is a zombie. Cinnabar Island Volcano didn't erupt, Blaine destroyed it to satisfy his pyromaniac desires. Giovanni is actually, in a surprising twist, Silver's son. Lorelei is also an ultra beast. Bruno ate Machokes to get so buff. Agatha is Professor Oak's mom. Lance is actually a Dragonite. Blue/Gary/whatever you want to call him is a transformer. Red is a ninja turtle. None of these headcanons are serious.
