Pokemon Manga Dissapointment thread

Y'know, I actually really enjoyed BOTH the Yellow and Emerald arcs.

Didn't feel the RGB arc so much, though.

My main disappointment was how quickly Blue's birds were tossed aside in GSC.

mmm....maybe I should read them again and see what happens.

Really? The RGB is my second favorite arc.

Well if my memory serves right(feel free to correct me if I am wrong) Blue only captures the birds to help here conquer her fear of birds and to help the others in the battle against mask of ice so it was logical that she set them free after their task was over.

I just didn't really like how episodic it was. One moment, Red's feeding his Snorlax near Vermilion, next he's chasing Articuno in the Seafoam Islands.

I don't mind that she set them free. I just didn't like how they were just tossed by the wayside after Ho-oh and Lugia were freed from the Mask Of Ice's control, even though Team Rocket was still an immediate threat.

What dissapointed me.....
Hmmmm..... Lets see.....Emerald seemed pretty bland to me and being short didn't seem like much of a problem.

Well let's not forget that it was only the first chapter of the series

they probably thought they never would've gotten as far as they have now..

Yeah, hence them covering the entire Kanto region, up to Mewtwo and all, in just 3 volumes.

Plus, the Snorlax "episode" took place a volume or so before the Articuno one, so I'd say it was "spaced out" enough.

Still can't see how people can think that was worse than that trashy Emerald arc, though. I've given my reasons a good billion times now, and it still don't get old how terrible the plot and villain were.

I read about White's role in the manga, and I have to say, if that Tepig is her starter then I feel it would be rather redundant. Yellow could get away with this because she represents Yellow Version and Pikachu was your starter. That, and it just seemed to give me a better vibe. But I feel really odd when I picture White with a Tepig. A Snivy seems to be more fitting to me only because it looks the most feminine in all of its forms. It's just that all of the females seem to have the Pokemon that either look feminine or have the Pokemon that their anime counterparts had. If this is the case, then Snivy would definitely be her Pokemon.

You forget that we have four characters of importance in Unova this time, and like in all generations, only 3 starter choices. It does suck that she gets stuck with the hideous pig, but she's supposed to be Black's bitch sidekick, and not Cheren's.

Bel not getting Snivy was kinda weird, though. You've stuck to the pattern for almost a decade and a half, Kusaka, so why deviate now? If Cheren got Oshawott, it could easily evolve as quickly as Green and Silver's starters and shed that goofy look fast.

Dare I ask what's wrong with a girl getting a tough looking Pokemon?

Yeah, the goofy-looking starters being reserved for the females kinda died out when Sapphire evolved hers to a Blaziken (not that I was ever a fan of Gen 3 starters in general), and though it tends to suck these days, Platinum's Empoleon doesn't look that cutesy.

Plus, only Blue and Platinum's teams are chock-full of feminine-looking Pokemon, as even Crystal has an Arcanine and Hitmonchan.

Absolutely nothing, actually. It's all for diversity's sake, hence why I wish for only one trainer to have Tepig. Also, consider how Bel and Cheren had their Pokedexes broken. Chances are, one of the fixed ones/newer ones will go to White and the third will go to the third trainer, presumably Gray/Grey. Did Emerald have certain physical traits of Wally from Gen III, because if he did, then Gray having traits of both Bel and Cheren wouldn't be a bad idea, Not only that, but it could make up for their possible absence in the story, and with less characters comes more character development for everyone else.

Now that you mention it, White having a Daikenki at some point would be pretty cool. Actually, if she doesn't get to keep the Tepig, which starter do you think she should have, Snivy or Oshawott?

And I also just realized that Blastoise is owned by Green/Blue, who is a girl.

I believe I may have mentioned this before, but if so, it deserves to be mentioned again: why is Adventures so badass, and everything else just so...I don't know, anti-badass? Uncool? Lame by comparison? I've never actually read the things, but from excerpts I've been provided with, it just makes everything else look like a preschooler's television show. Basically, something that, if I were to actually read it, would make me disappointed with everything else, rather than disappointed with it.

Well, Pokémon is for kids so the manga is mostly directed to kids. Of all the manga there is, it's mostly game adaptions, loose game adaptions, shojo, shonen, etc.

What you see uncool, anti-badass, etc is what someone else might like. Adventures is the way it is due to the fact it's shonen.

Adventures is also a kids manga, despite all of the violence. It's not even that bad actually, the blood is mostly scratches (except in some battles like Koga's and Green vs. Agatha and most of the final battle in the R&S chapter like Ruby and Wallace) and the storys are filled with comedy before going into the serious final battles.

There's also the Electric Tale of Pikachu, that can get very violent (And fanservicy) at times (case in point, Richie's Zippo vs. Ash's Charizard) but is still for kids (I think...)

Well, it is true that Pokemon is a kids thing, but Adventures isn't afraid to step over the boundaries that the other media doesn't even dare glance at. I guess that's what I think is nice about it - it's something that's a little more grown-up, while not straying too far from everything else.

True, but only by comparison to the really loose or kodomo-oriented adaptations does Special's violence really look that badass.

The moment we get to any bloodier shounen that cover darker aspects like rape, gang violence, and terrorism (only mildly compared to a lot of seinen titles, though), Special looks pretty cutesy by comparison.

Don't get me wrong, I'm with you on the part about it not being afraid to show hard fights when you contrast it to the gag and shoujo mango that Pokemon typically receives, but on the gore and sex grid Special's negligible, just like DBZ games or movies are to the God of War, Resident Evil, or GTA games (or any hack and slash, really).

Though that isn't to say I thought shit like Wallace getting banged against a boulder, Mewtwo getting chestfucked, or the whole Arbok regeneration thing weren't kewl.

Isn't by comparison what really matters, though? Yeah, of course it could be gorier, even though it does have things such as an Arbok being sliced in half. The violence and sexual stuff is there, but it isn't the focus. Which in some cases, actually makes it a little better (since you know shit's going down when it starts to happen). Gives it a dark touch without being too dark. IMO, only in slashers and pornos should one exclusively come for the gore and sex respectively (which some not of those category make the mistake of doing). :p

I know, I was just digressing on the matter about how Special is a second Berserk (or Shigurui, Vagabond, whatever) in terms of "badassery," since we know only the really rare moments like the Arbok-in-half and Koga's blood getting sucked have gone over the line that Tajiri would normally draw.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that that's the case, but they're still comparatively few compared to those manga titles that have heads and appendages showering with blood and organs in every fight.

You know, now that I think about it, the only really major gripe I had with the manga is that it never had an anime adaptation. I mean, a nice way they could've put the characters in the anime was through a crossover, and then the series would potentially get adapted into a cartoon of its own.

And about the violence. Watch Violence Jack. It defines what an adults anime is like.

You can't really do much about that, though. The anime'd gotten popular even overseas long before Special reached that amount (due to Viz not translating until 2000 and all), and since it's still running (much to the dismay of many), it'd be kind of weird to have two shows based on the same games airing at the same time.

I share your sentiments, but there's not much we can do but hope Ass's show gets bombed along with TV Tokyo-.
