Pokemon names based on one single word

But I wonder why some English names are single words, like Pauwau is Seel and Kusaihana is Gloom for instance. Do they like English too or did they just run our of ideas?
 
Well Abra and Kadabra are not pretty-sounding on their own, but when you put together all the evolution line, it's great, I always have loved those ones!
