It was 8 AM on the first day of summer vacation, and Professor Oak yawned and stretched. He knew that many young trainers would be eager to get their starters. Oak figured they could wait. He got out of the bed that he slept in, looking out the window of the apartment he had over his lab. Yep. That was a sleeping bag. He'd let the kid wake up later. Oak headed downstairs to make some coffee, still in his pajamas. Just as he was walking by his closet, he heard the click of the door open. He barely had time to turn before he was bashed on the back of the head. Then everything went black.

Just outside of Oak's lab, Leo was fast asleep in his sleeping bag. He was terrible at getting up early. So he had camped out in front of the door. If someone wanted to get in or out, they'd have to step on him and wake him up. That was not what woke him up. What woke him up was what looked like Professor Oak.

"Good morning young trainer!" Professor Oak(?) said. "Do you want to go on a Pokemon adventure?"

"W...What time is it?" Leo asked, as one of Professor Oak's eyebrows fell onto his forehead.

"Time to get your Pokemon!" The man said, grabbing Leo's hand and more or less dragging him into the lab.

Kay had been staking out the small town for quite some time now. He'd set up a very small and very temporary camp a kilometre and a half in the hills to the west of the town, acting on orders from his superiors. For what purpose he did not know but he assumed that this was a reconnaissance mission because all he had been asked to do was to count the number of young trainers and report his findings. Team Rocket had had some problems with first-time trainers in the past. They had a tendency to be a bit too adventurous for the interests of their legitimate organisation. Kay knew that today was a day where several new trainers would receive their first Pokemon and that they would be required to converge upon Pallet Town to do so, but beyond that it wasn't his place to ask questions. So at this moment, he huddled himself close to the ground, his vest hung open and partially revealed a large letter "R" upon the black field of his top.

Surveying the town through a pair of binoculars, Kay had so far counted one of these new trainers entering the Professor's lab, though it appeared that it had been somewhat against their will. It looked like something odd had happened in the lab a moment earlier, but Kay didn't actually see anyone enter the building and so didn't make a note of it.

He held a tape recorder to his mouth and checked his watch. "0803 hours...one potential trainer, unconfirmed. Just entered the Pokemon Lab, has yet to leave."

Soon after, another beginning trainer had entered the lab. Her name was Meg, and although you couldn't tell, she had a sort of accent. Obviously, the redhead wasn't from around here.

(If you're wondering, her accent is British.)

Mina was sitting in her room, looking in a mirror. She promised both her parents, and herself that she would go get a Pokemon, before going off on an adventure. But she was never really the adventurous type, unless it was in a game, or something. She was starting to reconsider her plans, and just go back to her normal lifestyle. "No," she thought to herself, "I need to do this, who knows? It might be fun after all." Reassuring herself, she proceeded to get ready to go to Professor Oak's lab. Taking a final look at herself, adjusting her beret, she took a deep breath before leaving.

After saying a quick goodbye to her parents, she was off to the lab. As she walked, many thoughts raced through her mind, "What Pokemon will I get? What will I call it? Will it like me? What will Professor Oak be like?" The thoughts continued until she finally made her way to the lab. Deciding to attempt to make a better first impression with the Professor, she threw on a pair of glasses she usually kept on hand, hoping she now looked smarter, before going to the door. Slightly trembling, she took a moment to calm herself, before entering the lab, trying not to bring anymore attention to herself, and trying to avoid eye contact whenever possible.

The man who was attempting to keep up the pretense he was professor Oak went into the back.

"Hey, we should go on a Pokemon adventure together." Leo said to the girl who was clearly attempting to avoid eye contact. He had to raise his voice a little, as there were muffled cries for help coming from the closet. His mom had told him to always go with a friend on Pokemon journeys because there were creepy old dudes about that would try to give him candy and she'd be damned if he wasn't that dumb.

"Here are your Pokemon. Sorry, we're all out of the normal starters." Said the man who was wearing a wig that made him look a tiny bit like Oak if you squinted and ignored the fact that he was missing an eyebrow, was shorter than Oak, had lighter skin, and was clearly not Professor Oak. He was carrying a crate labelled "MAGIKARP", full to the brim with Pokeballs.

"Pick a ball, any ball! Who knows what you'll get!" The man said. Leo grabbed a Pokeball, and pressed the button, releasing a Magikarp onto the floor.

"Damn. I was hoping for maybe a Charmander." Leo said, getting down on one knee and prodding the Pokemon.

Donna Abbott walked in the lab with her lovely long vanilla blonde hair. She wore a very dark blue tennis tank top along with a white tennis skort and turquoise sleek, light and comfortable running shoes that offered a lot of stability when she would run and walk.

Donna rocked up at the lab and walked in since the door was opened. First thing she noticed "Did a Charmander burn your eyebrow off?" She asked the Professor before taking a Pokeball. There was one thing Donna knew well and that was fashion and appearances. Actually that's two things and she knew something was off about that Professor Oak except she couldn't piece 2 and 2 together. "And what's with the hair? Maybe you need laser treatment."

She looked at the Pokeball. "Please be something pretty...." She let the Pokemon out which turned out to be a Slugma.

"That's so cool!!!"

Kay had counted three now.

He adjusted the lenses of his binoculars so that he was able to take a closer, clearer look. He pressed "Record" again. "Slugma and...Magikarp?" He frowned and examined his binoculars. They appeared to be working just fine. "Confirm that. He picked a Magikarp." He stopped the recording as he burst into a quiet fit of laughter.

These trainers would pose no threat to his organisation's interest. So confident was he of this fact that he even believed that they stood no chance against, say, his Eevee. Still, it seemed all too convenient for this young man who had received the useless fish and he thought back to the commotion he had glimpsed earlier. Was this a sabotage? He tried to take a closer look at this Professor Oak through an open window but he could only see up to his collar. It mattered very little to him. He wasn't among these people who were supposed to be receiving a Pokemon today. He had his orders and he would stick to them.

Meg picked one to the far side, which revealed an agitated-looking Deino. The Pokémon bit at anything that dared to move, including the professor.

Mina jumped slightly when she heard a boy asking about going on an adventure. She looked around to the best of her ability, as her vision was blurry with the glasses on. She felt that it was a mistake to put them on at this point, but she might look like some poser if she revealed that she did not need them now. She looked around, he seemed to be asking her. Mina felt herself lock up, and her mouth went dry. She nervously stuttered, "I-I, um. W-Well..." Before she could continue to embarrass herself, the Professor, or who seemed to be the Professor, who could tell with the world being as blurry as it is, announcing that the normal starters were gone, and that they had to pick a random ball instead. She quietly said out loud, "B-But doesn't that r-remove the selection process? S-sorry, never mind."

With that, she quietly made her way to the box. She discreetly lifted her glasses while looking inside, finally picking what looked like the perfect Pokeball. Backing away to make more room, she took a look at the other Pokemon already out of their balls, a Magikarp, a Slugma, and a Deino. She smiled to herself, wondering what Pokemon she was about to unveil, and enjoying the extra time she had to think of a proper response to the generous offer that boy gave her about going on an adventure. She lowered her glasses, and hit the button, unleashing a small flash as the Pokemon came out, revealing it to be a Mawile. Mina got down to her knees, closer to the Mawile's level, awkwardly saying, "Um, hi," before petting the Steel/Fairy type.

Kay spotted a fourth of these trainers as two more of them picked their Pokemon. He made a note of these developments. "Four new trainers. A Mawile and...what is that? It appears to be a species foreign to the region. Possibly a Dragon-type." He stopped the recording and lowered his binoculars. Their numbers were becoming more alarming but was unruffled. He assumed that his superiors would be able to make a certain amount of good use with this information.

The man pretending to be professor Oak left as the trainers looked at their new Pokemon. It looked like some of the starters had been mixed in with the Magikarp. Ah well, plenty left. He exited through the back door, where several men in black were loading Pokeballs into a black van.

"That went a lot more easily than I had hoped." James said, removing the wig he wore. He tapped his foot as he waited for Jesse to return.

"Here, let's trade." Leo said, trying to hand his Magikarp to Meg. As he spoke, the closet door broke open, a bound and gagged Oak hopping out.

"Mmmph Mmmph MMMMMPH!" The professor said around the strip of cloth covering his face.

The Deino, not surprisingly, was biting everything. Either way, it didn't seem to like Leon. "No thanks," Meg replied to Leon, returning the dragon type.

Staring at the professor, she managed to withhold a gasp. "We should help him, yeah?"

Kay's walkie talkie buzzed to life. "Agent Kay." a female voice addressed him. "Come in Agent Kay."

"Reporting." Kay said, speaking into the talkie. "I see four new trainers. Looks like something's going on at the Professor's lab, but I can't tell what. Over."

"Our agents should be loading the Pokemon in a truck at the back of the building. The idiots have them distracted but they won't be diverted for long." his superior said. "You're going to need to head into the town. Should they notice our presence we're going to need you to hold them off. Over."

Kay sighed. He was more used to covert operations. That he was asked to directly intervene was more than he was prepared for. "Roger that." he said reluctantly. "Over and out." With that, he packed his things, steeled himself and headed directly towards the lab.

Mina nearly had a heart attack when somebody broke through the closet door, she only barely resisted screaming, but she still visibly jumped. The Mawile ran in front of Mina to protect her new trainer. (Or she might have just been looking for a fight, either one really.) Still somewhat shaken, she finally decided to take off her accursed, blinding glasses. She saw that it was Professor Oak. Many thoughts were running through her head. "If the Professor's here, who was that other guy? Where'd he even go, he was here a minute ago." She was brought back to reality by the girl who got the Deino pointing out that they should probably help him. "R-Right," she said as she went to start untying him, starting by taking out his gag.

As soon as Mina undid the gag, she was assaulted by the Pokemon professor yelling.

"Don't stand there gawking! He's stealing my Pokemon!" Oak said, squirming around in his binding. "Don't worry about me, stop him!" Leo nodded, and charged out the door. He rushed out through the lab's ransacked storage area, and out in the space behind it. James was loading the last of the balls into the truck when he was surprised by the young man bursting through the door. James suddenly wished he hadn't taken off the disguise. Wait, that wouldn't work, Oak was right there.

"Give me back my Pokemon you thief!" Oak said. Still tied up, he had managed to crawl to the exit at a surprising speed.

"Wait, no! Um. I'm the real Oak. He's the fa-" Janes was interrupted mid-sentence by Leo throwing his new Magikarp at him, hitting him square in the face. But then Leo felt something wrap around his waist. He looked down, and an Arbok was constricting him.

"Honestly, James, can't you get anything right?" Jesse said, running over.

A kilometre and a half was a long distance to travel in a short amount of time, so it was Kay's assumption that his superiors weren't expecting any miracles on his part. He knew damn well that he would likely lose a battle if all four of these trainers chose to attack at once but that was not his concern. Right now his concern was getting there. He didn't make much effort to conceal his presence; where he might have darted behind buildings and peeked around corners he instead ran down the street. He had no time for subtlety.

The Professor's Lab had come into view at last. He would be there within moments.

"Soooo that's something different. Go do something Slugma?" Donna looked at her Slugma which looked all sluggy with its giant yellow eyes. She didn't realize that it should stood there with no faint idea of what it was supposed to do. "Anything?"

Donna's Slugma just yawned.

"That isn't good." She looked at Leo being constricted by the Arbok.

Deino began to chomp on Jessie's hair, pulling on it harshly.

The Professor's outburst surprised Mina enough to make her trip over her feet, banging her head against the door on the way down. "You're welcome," she muttered as she got up, rubbing the back of her head. But she decided to complain later, as everybody else went ahead, even the Professor, somehow.

She managed to catch up with them quickly, seeing Leo being constricted by an Arbok, and Meg's Deino yanking the Arbok's trainer's hair. She was terrified, but she did her best to hide it, she had to focus on stopping those thieves. But saving Leo was the pressing matter at the moment. This was it, her battle debut, the moment she had been spending months preparing for. Mustering all of her confidence, she declared, "Mawile, use Bite!" The Mawile looked at Mina with a confused expression. "I-I guess you don't know that move, um, use... any attack, anything that comes to mind!" The Mawile, still somewhat confused by her trainer's orders, hesitantly used Astonish on the Arbok. It seemed to barely faze the serpent. "This is going to take a while," Mina muttered.

Leo was rapidly turning blue as the Arbok began to nibble on his head. Jesse wasn't controlling it, because he Deino was eating her hair.

"James! Do something! I just had it done!" Jesse yelled, tugging at it. James pushed the Magikarp off of his body and went for his belt...And realized he had no Pokemon. Then he remembered. He had set his Pokeballs in one of the crates. He headed for one of the boxes and grabbed a Pokeball. He pressed the button, and a Lotad popped out.

"No..." James said under his breath, releasing a Charmander. Then a Teddiursa. "Where the heck is Weez-AAAAUGHHHHH!" James yelled, as Oak had slithered over and bit his leg. Meanwhile, Arbok was hit with the Astonish attack. It did very little to hurt it, but it did distract it from strangling Leo. The snake-like Pokemon unwound itself from Leo, then opened it's mouth and sprayed a blizzard of glowing purple needles at Mawile.
