Pokémon Sword and Shield anime speculation thread

I don't think Nessa is too old to travel with Ash (she looks about Cilian's age to me), I just don't want another gym leader/type-specialist traveling with Ash. We've already had Misty and Lana for water trainers (and I know their goals and personalities were different), but I really wish the staff would branch out with Ash's companions. My hopes are still for Ash are still the female PC and a customized version of the male PC, or an original character for his companions.

Since practically all of the revealed characters don't feel quite right yet, maybe it's time to bring back old characters coughSerenacoughGarycoughDawncough

I agree that since we already had two Water type specialists, getting a third one would be really reductive. But I don't necessarily think that type specialists are a bad thing. Iris was technically a Dragon type specialist and yet she still managed to catch non-Dragon Pokemon, so I'm not too bothered by the idea of a type specialist joining the crew as long as they focus on a type that's underrepresented.

I dunno about "unnatural", but Ash traveled with Brock for more than 10 years despite Brock being 15 when he debuted. And unless I missed something, Sonia and Milo don't look that much older than Brock. So why would it be such a bad thing if Ash's Galar friends are slightly older than Ash, assuming that those two become his friends of course?

Both Sonia and Milo look more like adults than Brock did, especially Sonia. Being slightly older wouldn't be a bad thing, but I don't think that they'd want all of the other SWSH cast members older than Ash.

That isn't going to happen. They aren't going to bring back characters from previous series instead of including characters from the newest game to promote it. Dawn would have an especially hard time returning a a main character if Contests aren't going to be featured in Sword/Shield. Even if by some miracle they are, then they'll just have the new female lead become a Coordinator instead. Contests being featured in D/P didn't keep May around, so why would they bring back Dawn when they could just make a new character to fill the role instead?

Besides all that, we only know a small handful of the human characters of the game. Jumping right into the notion that they should bring back older characters just because the first few revealed characters may not instantly look or sound like new main character material is pretty ridiculous.

I agree with you. I don't think that they are going to do that unless they make Ash himself either a teen or young adult, but I highly doubt that's happening.

About ages I don't think it really matters/. Serena do seem to be like 13\14 in her game concept art but they still made her 10 years old for XY.

As long as the character in question is not aged down that much I believe it's possible.

I hope this isn't the case. Brock kinda showed me that the writers have sometimes no real clue what to do with a character when they finished telling a story with them. And Brock didn't even had a story from the beginning, so he was nothing more than a running gag in the end. With Serena, it could happen the same. The shipping angle in X&Y was also treated as a running joke, very similar to the one of Brock, only a bit less silly.

No, the old companions served their point in their specific saga. I can see an old companion only return if none of the new side characters of the new games fit the target demographic. I think this was the case with Brock and why they kept him for so long because none of the male side characters was young and short enough.

I've have this idea that the Dynamax Band will play an important role in the Generation 8 anime, with Ash obtaining one and overusing it in battle, but everyone else in Galar has one too!

Also, if the anime goes with the "Ash makes friends at a place intended for new trainers" thing again, i'd doubt we'd have a Pokemon Camp this time round...

On the map of Galar, you see a location the looks like an enchanted forest. So, seeing something Harry Potter related in S&S isn't that far from reality.

I’m not sure if anyone has asked this, but… how do you think Ash will Dynamax his Pikachu?

In the games, we see the Pokémon being returned to the Pokéball and released as a kaiju, so how could they circumvent this issue with Pikachu? Force him into a Pokéball for the first time since Mewtwo Strikes Back, or some other unique method?

Maybe Ash won't Dynamax Pikachu at all? I figure that Pikachu's already enough of a marketing tool and Ash can just have his Galar Pokemon do the Dynamaxing since they'll actually be relevant to the Gen 8 series.

Not at all if that’s the case. Pikachu would totally not be on board if Ash just yanked him by the tail and chucked him into a Pokèball against his will.

Since it is not looking likely that the female protagonist will have a significant role if the player plays as the male protagonist, I think that Ash will just travel with two gym leaders again.

That doesn't matter. Female protagonists always assume their game's main PC roles.
