Pokémon Sword and Shield anime speculation thread

Would love if they created a brand new character for Sword and Shield, don't even need to get rid of Pikachu as a Mascot, have the new character catch one early on or get the Professor to give him one

We are well past the point where Ash could be replaced. He's been the main character for over twenty years, so I don't think that replacing him would be that easy as just giving a new main lead their own Pikachu. Every time a new generation starts, people want Ash to be replaced. I can understand why people want that to happen, but it just seems like way too much of a risk for them to replace their well established lead character after all this time. Not to mention a new main lead wouldn't necessarily be better or instantly improve a series.

They could go a similar direction to the re-imagining movies by having Ash be accompanied by brand new characters tailor made for the anime series, so to make the whole thing fresh and new.

But we would still have the "fresh and new" feel if Ash is accompanied by characters from the Shield and Sword games in the ShSw series since Gen 8 is new. So I don't see why the showrunners would have to go the extra mile by creating completely original cast members for ShSw.

Because if you look back at Gen 6, the anime, despite being impressive, didn't do well in Japan, Although that could be due to Yokai Watch having that blip as a fad throughout that Gen.

Its possible they give Ash four numbers: 1997, the year the anime first aired.

I think they're going with three digits as the max. I was going to say that's weird, then remembered I have a jersey from one of my school clubs with three digits (still weird, but does exist). That's the only reason I was thinking 151, although some other good suggestions were made here with the three digit format!

I could see 25 for Pikachu, though here's a factor to consider.

Courtesy of TV tropes.

Goroawase Number - TV Tropes

Numbers in Japanese don't have a single pronunciation: both kun'yomi (native Japanese) and on'yomi (Chinese-derived) readings are commonly used. Japanese speakers take advantage of these different phonetic readings, mixing them freely to produce mnemonic phrases to remember long numbers, such as phone numbers or entrance exam IDs. This device, called goroawase (wordplay), also can be reversed to convert many Japanese names or phrases into code numbers.

Milo

Milo has the number 831 on his shorts, which in Japanese is code for "yasai", meaning "vegetables".

Nessa has the number 049 on her shorts, which in Japanese is code for "oyogu", meaning "to swim".

Bea has the number 193 on her shorts, which in Japanese is code for "ikusa", meaning "fight".

: Allister has the number 291 on his shorts, which in Japanese is code for "nikui", meaning "hateful".

If Gen 4 ended up having a similar redesign for their outfits, then I can already imagine Gardenia's being 407. Not only because of her ace being Roserade, but also in word play, Shi, Re, Na, which is close to the japanese word Shinrin, which translates to Forest.

If this is how it works as an example. Could someone please help me out if this doesn't work or advice because I am not japanese.

There is a 4chan leak that someone found that claims to have the leaks to the Sword and Shield anime, and it's only by looking at it yourself that you can tell it is fake,

I think it is certainly a possibility we could see Bea as Ash's female companion. We haven't seen a Fighting-type specialist be one of Ash's companions yet, and she could be a nice foil to Ash in terms of personality & approach to battling (calm & collected instead of fiery & passionate), and they could also continue the trend of female Gym Leaders who are scared of a certain type of Pokémon by giving her a fear of Ghost types, both as a shout out to her Shield counterpart Allister and because they're immune to Fighting-type attacks.

Just like with the Trial Captains in the Sun & Moon anime, I think they could easily find some way to make Bea's anime counterpart look 10 years old.

And as for the starters, I still think Ash will get Scorbunny, but the other two are anybody's guess. I think we can bet on one thing though - Sobble will be this series' Larvitar/Nebby!

We haven't seen the other Gym Leaders yet so we can't be certain that it's them. For all we know they would choose a Gym Leader from London.

Incoming DBZ/S references!
(The only thing that would make it perfect was if he was voiced by a DB VA. (I can kind of hear Goku or Yamcha's voice coming form Milo's mouth ))

I don't know, some those sound like good episode ideas. I certainly like the idea of Hop being part of Ash-tachii, or at least an honorary member.

Though yeah, it's probably too early. Plus, there's NO way the TRio are keeping their Alola Mon, let alone bringing back ones from previous sagas.
Though how early DO they start on scripts before the episodes air anyway?:confused_emoji:

I know that development of episodes is generally 6+ months out, at least at one point. So some probably do exist....

Every bit of news we get makes me more intrigued with how the anime will be executed. We already knew how huge the Pokemon battle scene was in Galar with the June trailer, but now with Monday's info we know more about the endorsements, the Champion tournament (which actually seems to resemble the anime's own formula), Chairman Rose, and it's really emphasizing how big the league is in this region. The good thing is that we're obviously getting huge battling focus, but it looks like the focus on the gyms and league will be even more important than ever before.

These patterns so to speak are the result of users over thinking. It'd be fine to have Bea and or Alister. I have taken a liking to the latter myself.

And, the anime staff have shown on many occasions recently that they are completely capable of breaking patterns and traditions.

Patterns? I've personally never used patterns when it comes to speculating which characters Ash will travel with in Galar. I just don't see why anyone would want a wannabe goth character like Allister in the cast when he's like the personification of a Hot Topic store. And Bea with her large bare feet and WNBA player physique ain't exactly a prime cut either.

Honestly, I’m starting to find this kind of language really irritating. I’m sure everyone understood your original point about Hidaka’s misogynistic comment from 10 years ago, but there’s no reason we as a community need to talk in a way that propagates that as valid.

I also believe that even the money-driven ethos of the Pokemon corporation is capable of progress. I don’t feel strongly either way about Saitou/Bea but I really hope we’re moving into an era when being ‘eye-candy’ is no longer a requirement for being the series’ female lead.

I wouldn't mind seeing a girl with big feet for once and with a six-pack. It would be visually very interesting. I don't think that Gloria can over much that none of the other girls already did. Unless she turns out to be a harsh, aggressive, Scottish stereotype like she is portrayed this way in the memes.

I also think Bea could also offer a new angle in terms of character interactions. A tough girl who never shows any emotions could be an interesting counterpart to Ash's happy-go-lucky attitude.

But I have a feeling we will not see her as a companion since she doesn't fit the template of the other girl characters. She is a big-footed, muscular, tough-as-nails fighter girl. Nothing on her is really considered. Neither her design, her attitude or the Pokémon she will most likely own. I do not think the anime is really ready for such a big change in their formula.
