Postcard from Lockdown

END OF DAY 60: 21 DAYS TO GO...AT LEAST?
Case in Victoria in the Past 24 Hours: 63 new cases (1872 active cases) 666 lives lost (+5 new deaths in past 24 hours)

Well, today was the press conference, and was mixed (you can view the statement from our Premier Daniel Andrews Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Statement from The Premier). Some people (mostly industry groups) are saying that this is a bad thing for the economy. While I support opening up, we cannot be too quick about it, as if we open up to quickly (like certain groups, the Liberal Party, as well as certain conspiracy theorists want us to do), then we would be back to square one and would have to endure everything again. As a Victorian, we need to be conservative, and go about it slowly and carefully. We need to be realistic about coronavirus in which it will not simply disappear. It will take time and we need to accept that we need to go slow and steady and accept long term pain (i.e. lockdown) for long term gain (freedom).

Here are some of the changes that will take effect next Sunday:
  • Curfew will start at 2100 instead of the current 2000 (acknowledging that days are getting longer and sunset is later)
  • Exercise will be a maximum of 2 hours a day instead of 1 hour. This could be a two-hour block or split into two one-hour blocks
  • A social bubble will be introduced for those who are living on their own
  • Regional Victoria to enter '2nd Step' of roadmap on September 13
  • All VCE and VCAL students will attend onsite for the General Achievement Test and other essential assessments from 5 October
  • Up to five people will be able to gather together in outdoor public places – the park, the beach – up to a maximum of two households.
  • Outdoor pools and playgrounds in regional Victoria will also open. And religious services can be conducted outside with a maximum of five people, plus a faith leader
  • For schools and students, a staged return to onsite learning from Term Four
Below is a story that aired on 10 News First here in Australia and it by Emma O'Sullivan who is a reporter for 10 News First here in Melbourne (as it was a weekend, it was a national bulletin instead of a state-based bulletin), and this is a story about the roadmap out of lockdown here in Victoria, including the milestones that we hope to achieve as part of the phased exit from lockdown.

Sadly, there are people around the world protesting against lockdown, even when their country has high number of new cases. As you may remember a couple of months ago, I put up an article from Singapore's Straits Times in regards to a 30 year old Texan who was a coronavirus denier, but ultimately died from it.

Today, we had 63 new cases of coronavirus (an overall increase of 59 due to 4 cases being reclassified), and sadly five new deaths, all linked to aged care facilities (one woman in her 80's, three women in their 90's and one woman in her 100's). Three of the deaths occurred yesterday, while two occurred prior to yesterday.

And now to some of the statistics from today (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 06 September 2020):

Today was Fathers' Day here in Australia (happy Fathers' Day to all the fathers out there), but it was largely subdued day due to coronavirus, especially here in Melbourne. I just listened to the radio and did an online course today. And just before bed tonight, I will be reading a book.

TOMORROW: Being Monday, homework club (via Zoom); plus a doctor's appointment (via phone). And watch a bit of television tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow.

As a Brimbank resident, I feel a bit disappointed that Brimbank now has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of active cases, and has actually gone up in the past 24 hours. In my postcode (3037), there has been an increase of just 1 case in the past 24 hours and now has 69 active cases (445 confirmed cases ever) and 134.9 active cases per 100 000 population (if you are in Victoria, you can check out the data for your postcode here- Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Victorian coronavirus (COVID-19) data).

Today, I relaxed and listened to the radio. I also got some medication today at my local pharmacy.

TOMORROW: Meditation session tomorrow night. And study Korean.

END OF DAY 64; 17 DAYS TO GO...AT LEAST?
Cases in Victoria in the Past 24 Hours: 51 new cases (1483 active cases) 701 lives lost (+7 new deaths in past 24 hours)

Hi. It looks like the number of new cases are going down, with 51 new cases in the previous 24 hours, a drop from 76 yesterday (an overall increase of 40 today due to 11 cases being reclassified), and sadly 7 lives have been lost, with a grim total of 701 lives lost since the coronavirus pandemic began. Four men aged in their 70s and two women and one man aged in their 80s with 4 of the new deaths linked to known outbreaks at aged care facilities. Four of the deaths occurred prior to yesterday.

And now to some of the statistics of the day (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 10 September 2020). Firstly, the running 14-day average of new cases
Today’s rolling daily average case number for metropolitan Melbourne is 70.1 and regional Victoria is 4.5. The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.

The 14-day rolling average for cases from an unknown source is 154 for metropolitan Melbourne and eight for regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.

TODAY: This morning I did a course via CAE (via Zoom) and tonight, I attended a webinar on will ASEAN survive to 2030? I think it is important to think about how intergovernmental organisations such as ASEAN and the European Union will get through the coronavirus pandemic, which is having an impact on how countries interact with each other both during coronavirus and after coronavirus. I feel that certain governments are using coronavirus to destroy the liberal global governance system that was created in the aftermath of the Second World War (mostly implemented by the very superpowers that seek to destroy it). I am currently listening to the radio, listening to Son of Crawdaddy on 3RRR, which started with the traditional opening track by the late great Chris Wilson, which I mentioned in a previous post in this blog.

I was watching Seven Afternoon News earlier today, and there was a video by the Royal Melbourne Hospital Scrub Choir, which I have included in this post if you want to see it. It is their version of I'll Stand By You by The Pretenders from 1994 (I'll Stand by You - Wikipedia).

And today is World Suicide Prevention Day throughout the world. It is important to maintain mental health, especially as many people around the world are currently in lockdown due to coronavirus. If you are experiencing difficulties at this time, seek help. I found a page on Lifeline Australia's website about mental health and wellbeing during the Coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak (COVID-19). Here are some ways to cope from Lifeline Australia

Going into a period of social distancing, self-isolation or quarantine may feel daunting or overwhelming, and can contribute to feelings of helplessness and fear. In addition to the above, we encourage the following;
  • Perspective – try to see this time as unique and different, not necessarily bad, even if it something you didn’t necessarily choose
  • Connection – think of creative ways to stay connected with others, including social media, email and phone.
  • Be generous to others – giving to others in times of need not only helps the recipient, it enhances your wellbeing too. Is there a way to help others around you?
  • Stay connected with your values. Don’t let fear or anxiety drive your interactions with others. We are all in this together!
  • Daily routine – create a routine that prioritises things you enjoy and even things you have been meaning to do but haven’t had enough time. Read that book, watch that show, take up that new hobby.
  • Try to see this as a new and unusual period that might even have some benefits.
  • Limit your exposure to news and media. Perhaps choose specific times of day when you will get updates, and ensure they are from reputable and reliable sources.

And if you need help (and you are in Australia), you can call Lifeline 24 hours a day 7 days a week on 13 11 14 or via text nightly (1800-2400 AEST) on 0477 13 11 14.

TOMORROW: Do an online course and study Korean.

See you tomorrow.

Firstly, the good news and it looks like that we are seeing the possible end of the second wave here in Victoria with 43 new cases in the past 24 hours (an overall increase of 39 due to four cases being reclassified), but sadly, nine more lives has been lost to coronavirus (one woman in her 50s, one woman in her 70s, three men in their 80s and four women in their 90s) with five of the deaths occurring prior to yesterday. Seven of the new deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.

The average number of cases diagnosed in the last 14 days for metropolitan Melbourne is 65.3 and regional Victoria is 4.7. The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.

The total number of cases from an unknown source in the last 14 days is 134 for metropolitan Melbourne and seven for regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.

At the moment, it is looking good for regional areas with the fourteen day rolling average now below five, and it is also heading down in metropolitan Melbourne with 65.3.

Sadly, if you are planning to head to the Myer Christmas Window this year, it has been cancelled due to coronavirus, and I have a funny feeling that the New Years' Eve fireworks in the city (which I have been going to every year for the past decade) will also be cancelled this year due to restrictions on crowds due to coronavirus (watch this space for the latter).

Today, I didn't get to do what I planned, but I did go for a walk plus I had to put credit on my phone (my credit expires in a few days). I watched a bit of television tonight, and I will read a book before hitting the hay tonight.

TOMORROW: Online course and study Korean. I may get around to watch a film on Netflix tomorrow (#Alive) as I won't be able to leave the house due to heavy rain all day tomorrow (20mm-35mm expected tomorrow here in Melbourne). And I will do a Top 25 LGA list tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow.

Its a horrible thing to see your local government area being number 1 in cases of active cases, but the good thing is that it is going down (down from 169 yesterday). Hopefully it continues to go down.

And now to today in review. I didn't get around to watch the film I mentioned yesterday (hopefully in the next couple of days), but apart from that, I did what I planned to do. It is currently raining here in the western suburbs of Melbourne (it was supposed to be raining all day, but it has been raining for about an hour, but it is not as heavy as I thought). I am currently listening to the radio and will soon be calling it a day.

TOMORROW: Just relax.

We are edging closer to 1000 active cases here in Victoria, which is good news and we could go below 1000 this week. Sadly today, there were protests at the Queen Victoria Market, and it was distressing for people (especially children. There was a story on 10 News First of a toddler crying because of the protests). While I would like lockdown to end, it is not that simple as if we open up too quickly, then we would be back to square one and lockdown will last longer. And I personally find these protesters to be rank hypocrites, as they cry freedom and human rights for themselves, but not others. What about refugees and asylum seekers locked up in concentration camps by Peter Dutton? Do these anti-lockdown protesters care about refugees and asylum seekers?

Enough of my rants. Today was a day of relaxation. I went for a walk this afternoon, and listened to the radio. I also did an online course tonight, as well as watching a bit of television.

TOMORROW: Homework Club (being Monday), and watching a bit of television tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow.

Cases in Victoria in the Past 24 Hours: 42 new cases (1040 active cases) 729 lives lost (0 deaths in past 24 hours)

Firstly, apologies for no update last night, as this was due to a blackout here in Delahey last night (just when I was about to log on to the Bulbagarden Forums before the end of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, which was on SBS at the time of the blackout) and power didn't return until 0130 this morning. You can check out the data from yesterday here (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria – 14 September 2020).

Today, we saw 42 new cases here in Melbourne (an increase from 35 new cases yesterday), an overall increase of 39 today due to 3 cases being reclassified. And for the first time since 13 July, there had been no deaths in the previous 24 hours (that's today statistics, please check the above link for yesterday's statistics). However, as will be mention later on in this post, there are concerns in Casey in Melbourne's south-east in regards to coronavirus (1028 confirmed cases and 83 active cases). The 14-day running average here in metropolitan Melbourne is 52.9 and regional Victoria 3.6. On Thursday, some more restrictions will be lifted in regional Victoria (which will go to the third step), and it is looking good for Melbourne to move to the second step on 28 September...unless those selfish conspiracy theorists ruins it for everyone else (you can view the roadmap here: Coronavirus (COVID-19) roadmap to reopening).

Yesterday afternoon, before going to homework club that I volunteer at, I got around to watch #Alive, and if you are a fan of films like Train to Busan or Peninsula then you will love it. Similar premise in which it is a zombie apocalypse in Seoul, but like coronavirus, people are stuck in their apartments and stars Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye as the protagonists who are stuck in their apartments while the zombie apocalypse happens outside. Its on Netflix (an article about it appeared in The Korea Times, you can check out the article here- Zombie thriller '#Alive' becomes Netflix's most popular film). It is very good, but intense.

I did an online course today, and tonight I watched 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. I am currently listening to the radio.

TOMORROW: Relax.

Well, lets start with the bad news, in which there has been 8 new deaths in the past 24 hours (one woman aged in her 60s, two men aged in their 80s and three women and two men aged in their 90s) and four of the deaths occurred prior to yesterday. Six of the eight new deaths have been linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.

And now to some good news and the number of new cases have gone down again, with 28 new cases (an overall increase of 27 due to the removal of 1 case due to reclassification). This is the first time since 24 June that the number of new cases has been in the 20s. This has seen the 14-day running average for Melbourne drop dramatically from 49.6 yesterday to 44.4 today. Note the disclaimer from a few days ago. There is now talk that some of the restrictions here in Melbourne will be lifted sooner, and while I support opening up, we can't be too quick about it as if we open up too quickly, then we risk going back to square one and have to go through this all over again.

And now to some of the statistics of the day (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 17 September 2020)

Today has been a quiet day for me. But concerns about New Years' Eve this year has come back with talk that the world famous Sydney fireworks may be cancelled this year, and the same thing may happen here in Melbourne this year, both due to coronavirus. And while we are making progress with lowering the number of cases (as noted at the top of the post) there are selfish people out there who believe that they have rights and no responsibilities. And while I support freedom, these so-called "experts" who go out protesting (and claiming that they have rights under a document that they no doubt oppose if it was another group protesting, such as refugee advocates who support freedom for refugees) and ruin it for everyone who want to get out sooner rather than later. I prefer actual experts and not "armchair experts" who think they know everything just by reading an article on some far-right wing conspiracy website (I'm looking at you Alex Jones) and not read actual research carried out by people who know what they are on about. Don't fall for these "armchair experts" who don't know what they are on about, listen to actual experts who spent years researching.

TOMORROW: Relax and listen to the radio.

See you tomorrow.

And now to today: Today was a largely quiet day for me, just listening to the radio and watching television tonight. While watching the news tonight, I was deeply offended by anti-lockdown protesters who complain about a lack of freedom, but don't care about the lack of freedoms that refugees who flee persecution have while locked up in concentration camps in remote areas; or our First Nations people. Imagine the reaction of these anti-lockdown protesters if I was to protest against treatment of refugees. They (the anti-lockdown protesters) can walk the walk, but can they talk the talk. And no doubt John Farnham would be deeply offended by these anti-lockdown protesters singing You're The Voice (last week, these same people sang I Am Australian by The Seekers, no doubt offending The Seekers as well).

And if you are in Victoria, council elections are coming up, and as usual, these will largely be postal voting like the past couple of council elections. So make sure you are registered to vote in the council elections and make sure you vote and send your voting ballot (which will be sent out in early October) back to the Victorian Electoral Commission (note that there will be no election in Casey City Council, South Gippsland Shire Council and Whittlesea City Council) (2020 local council election).

TOMORROW: Holiday program at the homework club that I volunteer at.

See you tomorrow.

Firstly, you may remember in last night's post, I made comments about the anti-lockdown protesters singing You're The Voice. Well, John Farnham was pretty angry at the protesters singing it (Lower your Voice: Farnham manager attacks anti-lockdown protesters' singalong). Good on him for telling these "protesters" (or "armchair experts") off.

Well, today we saw a spike in new cases with 28 new cases in the previous 24 hours (an overall increase of 25 due to three cases being reclassified) and 24 of the new cases linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 22 September 2020). There will be no table tonight (because its gone back to confirmed cases and not the easier active cases), but in my home local government area (Brimbank), there has been 5 new cases, which means that there are now 98 active cases in Brimbank. For you Casey watchers out there, no new cases in the past 24 hours (as far as I am aware), and there are currently 45 active cases in Casey. The good news is that we are on track to see some restrictions lifted on Monday (an announcement on that will be in the next couple of days) as we need to be to have a 14-day running average of new cases between 30 and 50 to see some restrictions lifted, and Melbourne is at 32.8., so we are near the low end of the target range.

Sadly, there has been three deaths in the past 24 hours: one woman in her 70s, one woman in her 90s and one woman in her 100s. Two deaths occurred prior to yesterday. All deaths has been linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.

Sadly, five lives were lost today (One man aged in his 70s, two women in their 80s, one man in his 90s and one woman in her 100s). Three of the deaths occurred prior to yesterday and all five deaths have been lined to aged care facilities.

Well, the order of local government area on the Department of Health and Human Services is still by confirmed cases and not active cases, but in my local area (Brimbank) we have 2036 confirmed cases (ever) and 95 active cases. You can check out the data on the website (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 23 September 2020). It looks like the number of active cases in Casey is going down (35 active cases in the table, 19 active cases currently linked to the Casey community outbreak).

Today was relatively quiet apart from a holiday program at a homework club I volunteer at. I watched a bit of television tonight.

TOMORROW: Online course and study Korean.

See you tomorrow.

Well, today we saw 12 new cases in Victoria (an overall increase of just five due to seven cases being reclassified), and sadly 2 more deaths in past 24 hours (two women in their 80s) and both deaths have been linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. For those who are interested, there are no active cases for interstate residents included (97 confirmed cases ever), ditto for overseas (4 confirmed cases ever) and the unknown (which is what we are following) 5 active cases.

Today, I didn't do what I hoped to do, but I will do it tomorrow. I did some writing and watched a bit of television this evening.

See you tomorrow.

For those who are interested, there are 3 unknown active cases in Victoria. And on Sunday, Daniel Andrews will announce changes to the restrictions (it is expected that more restrictions will be relaxed than initially planned due to the 14-day running average being below the 30-50 target range). I will mention it on Sunday.

Today, I did a bit of shopping as well as an online course and watched a bit of television tonight.

Here in Victoria, the story of the day was the resignation of Health Minister Jenny Mikakos, who also resigned from the Victorian Parliament. As she is a member of the Legislative Council (our upper house), it will NOT affect the numbers in the lower house, and since it is an upper house seat, Daniel Andrews will choose the next member (just like the Senate at federal level). And tomorrow will be a big day for Melbourne, as some restrictions will be lifted. We needed to have a 14-day running average of between 30-50 new cases per day for some restrictions to be lifted, and we are at 23.6, so we have done better than required. I will mention the changes in tomorrow night's post.

Today was a day of relaxation, I did the online course. I also watched a bit of television tonight.

TOMORROW: Listen to the radio. And study Korean.

See you tomorrow.
