Firstly, the announcement was made this afternoon by Daniel Andrews (some of the details are in the post above), the real shock was in regards to curfews, which I think would've be 2100-0500 starting tomorrow. Well, after tonight, NO MORE CURFEWS! Melbourne will officially move to the second step at 2359 tonight, except for curfew which is 0500 tomorrow morning (you can view the summary at Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Second Step restrictions summary - Metropolitan Melbourne). But I still think we need to be conservative with the steps we take, and not go too quickly, because if we go too quickly, then we risk a third wave, and we don't want that.

Today was a relatively quiet day, apart for doing some shopping at my local shopping centre. I mostly listened to the radio and watched a bit of television tonight (saw part 2 of The Rise of the Murdoch Dynasty on ABC). I also did an online course.

TOMORROW: Holiday program at homework club (via Zoom), and soon the kids will be back at school, but no doubt homework club will still be via Zoom.

See you tomorrow.

Today I got involved in a holiday program at a homework club I volunteer at, and I was humiliated by a question in a quiz we did. It was about movies, and I got it wrong. The answer to the question was "Lady and the Tramp", and yet I accidentally selected "Lady and the Trump". I don't think I will ever let it go. I watched a bit of television tonight.

Today was a pretty busy day. I went for a walk before doing the holiday program at homework club (via Zoom). Tonight, I went to a webinar (
again via Zoom), and I didn't watch much television tonight, one because the cycling was on (instead of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, which is normally on Viceland) and we had some rain, which meant reception problems on ABC (I normally watch Mad As Hell and Utopia, but I might watch QI later). I will study Korean after QI.

I saw the video last night in regards to Crown Tundra, and I am beginning to warm to Galarian Slowking. You can see my post on this in the Sword & Shield: Expansion Pass thread.

Sadly, we heard of the death of Helen Reddy (one of our greatest exports) (Vale: Helen Reddy | TV Tonight) who was born in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia (bit of trivia for you guys out there, her half-sister is Toni Lamond, who is also in the entertainment industry here in Australia and overseas as well, and had been on Spicks and Specks a few times).

TOMORROW: Quiet day, so I might do some writing. And study Korean.

See you tomorrow.

Today, I went to the pharmacy to get some medication and listened to the radio and watched a bit of television tonight. I also went for a walk around the neighbourhood. This afternoon, I did a bit of research on some of the candidates that are running for the council elections here in Brimbank (I'm in Taylors Ward) and I urge my fellow Victorians (not just here on the forums, but all Victorians eligible to vote) to do research on your candidates to see where they stand on issues affecting your community. I am largely focused on services (such as programs run by council and of course libraries which are more important than ever, even though they are currently closed here in Brimbank due to coronavirus) and public transport. I can't stress enough to do your research on candidates. AND VOTE! (It's postal voting as usual, so vote early and mail in your votes before the deadline to avoid paying a fine. Your voting pack should be delivered any day now).

TOMORROW: Study Korean and do an online course.

See you tomorrow.

Today, I mostly listened to the radio and watched television tonight. I was listening to On The Blower on 3RRR this morning and a caller spoke about an aide of US President Donald Trump having coronavirus, and it was confirmed this afternoon (Australian Eastern Standard Time) that Donald Trump (and his wife Melania) has tested positive for coronavirus. I mentioned this in the thread about the Presidential Election that there are several factors that complicates things for Trump, such as 1) he is obese for his height (243 pounds or 110 kilograms); 2) he has high cholesterol; and 3) he is 74 years old and 8 out of 10 deaths in the United States of America that has been attributed to coronavirus are those who were aged over 65 (Trump Tests Positive for the Coronavirus). And even though I don't like Trump, I hope he makes a speedy recovery as I would not even wish coronavirus upon my own enemy.

TOMORROW: Online course and watch a bit of television tomorrow night (Only Connect is on SBS Viceland tomorrow night). And study Korean.

See you tomorrow.

The number of new cases has decreased to just 8 new cases today (an overall increase of six due to 2 cases being reclassified) and 241 active cases in Victoria, which is good as it is getting lower, but there are several hotspots of concern- four are linked to the Butcher Club at Chadstone Shopping Centre outbreak and two are linked to healthcare facilities. The other two cases remain under investigation. However, I am deeply concerned that as the weather gets warmer here in Australia (we are getting closer to summer here in Australia), we could see a third wave, just like what happened in Europe during their summer several months ago.

Sadly, there have been three deaths in the past 24 hours, one woman aged in her 80s and two women aged in their 90s and all three deaths have been linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities.

And now to the data for today (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 03 October 2020):
In Victoria at the current time:
  • 4271 cases may indicate community transmission – a decrease of two since yesterday
  • 241 cases are currently active in Victoria
  • 34 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including four in intensive care
  • 19,091 people have recovered from the virus
  • A total of 2,733,499 test results have been received which is an increase of 11,281 since yesterday.
Of the 241 current active cases in Victoria:
  • 239 are in metropolitan Melbourne under the Second Step of our roadmap
  • 2 are in regional local government areas under the Third Step of our roadmap
  • Colac Otway has one active case and Greater Geelong, Greater Bendigo and Ballarat have no active cases.
Of the total cases:
  • 18,805 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 1192 are from regional Victoria
  • Total cases include 9633 men and 10,550 women
  • Total number of healthcare workers: 3538, active cases: 35
  • There are 94 active cases relating to aged care facilities
Active aged care outbreaks with the highest active case numbers are as follows:
  • Estia Aged Care Facility Keilor: 30 active (total cases: 47)

  • 3 active cases are currently linked to the Casey community outbreak (total cases: 45)
  • 3 active cases are currently linked to Western Health Sunshine (total cases: 3)

And to the local government areas (which you can view here Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 03 October 2020, but I won't republish it because it gone back to confirmed cases, and I prefer to see in in the order of the number of active cases), and sadly, my local government area has the most active cases, but it is getting lower with 39 active cases (I think it is mostly connected to aged care facilities - I think Estia Aged Care Facility is in Brimbank, I might check my street directory to verify it), and 3 active cases at Western Health Sunshine. Wyndham is second with 37 active cases.

Today, I listened to the radio and watched a bit of television. I did an online course and studied Korean this evening. I will do an online first aid course in the next week or so (I was due to do a First Aid course this year, but I need to do it online before doing the physical component due to coronavirus). I am currently listening to the radio.

And if you are in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, Victoria (my home state), Tasmania or South Australia, a reminder that daylight savings begins at 0200 tomorrow morning (0300 AEDT), so before going to bed tonight, put your clocks FORWARD one hour. I have already done it myself.

TOMORROW: Listen to the radio and watch a bit of television (the third and final part of the documentary on the Murdochs is on tomorrow night at 1930 on ABC).

As you may remember, I promised you that I would check in regards to the local government area in which the Estia Aged Care Facility is located, and it is in my local government area (which is Brimbank). Today, there are 37 active cases in Brimbank, with 29 of those active cases being linked to Estia Aged Care Facility and a further three linked to Western Health Sunshine (that's 32 active cases in these two outbreaks alone, compared to just 5 outside these main outbreaks within Brimbank). You can view the table at Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - Sunday 4 October.

Today was a relative quiet day for me, mainly listening to the radio. I was listening to The Party Show on 3RRR early this morning after going to bed, and a lot of people are taking advantage of lockdown due to coronavirus to do things. For example, former Killing Heidi singer Ella Hooper is writing songs during lockdown in Violet Town (which is in regional Victoria) and mentioned that she did a painting while in lockdown. For me, I have been doing online courses, attending homework club (via Zoom) and a course at CAE (which I am starting a new course with on Tuesday), as well as studying Korean. I am just about to study Korean again tonight.

For those who live in Victoria (excluding certain council areas that I mentioned a few nights ago), your ballot packs will be mailed out this week, and you can ask your candidates questions that could help you decide who you would vote for. More details are at 2020 local council election, and check out who is running in your ward. The questions you ask your candidates (via email) would be useful in researching your candidates. I am voting on issues such as public transport and community services (there are about 15 running in my ward for 3 spots on council).

TOMORROW: Homework club begins again for Term 4 (via Zoom) and watch a bit of television tomorrow night. I will also be studying Korean.

See you tomorrow.

While the 14-day running average is encouraging to take the next step, we might not make it because of a few selfish people ("sovereign citizens") decided to break the law thinking that the law doesn't apply to them and that we should look after their human rights (while denying everyone else their human rights not to get infected). I personally believe that we should be conservative when it comes to taking steps out of lockdown, go slow and steady and not too quickly as if we go too quickly, we could be back at square one. I am also concerned that the New Year's Fireworks in the city will be cancelled due to coronavirus, which I would have no issue with on health and safety grounds.

Today I did volunteer work at a homework club (via Zoom) and watched a bit of television (just watched 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown on SBS). Apart from that (and doing a bit of shopping this morning, get some rolls for lunch tomorrow), it has largely been a quiet day for me.

Today we had 15 new cases of coronavirus here in Victoria (an overall increase of 13 due to 2 cases being reclassified), with eight of today’s 15 new cases have been linked to known outbreaks or are linked to a complex case. Three of these new cases are linked to the Chadstone Shopping Centre (The Butcher Club) outbreak, two are linked to Estia Keilor, with single cases linked to Embracia Moonee Valley, the Oddfellows Café in Kilmore and a complex case. The other seven cases remain under investigation. In regards to The Butcher Club outbreak at Chadstone, it may be connected to a possible outbreak in Kilmore (Kilmore is in Mitchell Shire, which you may remember early in this series of posts, was initially at the same restrictions as metropolitan Melbourne) at the Oddfellows Café. There are investigations going on, but I won't talk about it until there are more details, possibly tomorrow.

Sadly, there has been one new death in the past 24 hours with one woman in her 90s dying, and the death has been linked to a known outbreak in an aged care facility. The death occurred prior to yesterday.

Well, today I did a course through the CAE here in Melbourne (via Zoom), and listened to the radio. Tonight, I watched the Federal Budget get handed down (Political Christmas for me, as I look forward to it every year, but was delayed due to coronavirus). I am currently listening to the radio, and I will soon study Korean. In case you are wondering, the Budget Papers are now up at Budget.gov.au | 2020-21 Budget. I looked at education, and there was nothing there, and nothing for support for students in the budget (I am not currently a student, but I follow the issues for students as I studied a few years ago). I can't believe the Centre Alliance sold out students and young people by supporting the Federal Government's anti-intellectual campaign to double fees for those doing arts, social sciences and humanities degrees, and several of the job-ready degrees are receiving cuts in government funding. As someone who did an Arts degree, I feel disgusted by the Centre Alliance's sell-out to the Liberal Party, and selling out our country's future.

TOMORROW: Online course and study Korean. I will also watch a bit of television tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow.

Today, we had six new cases (an overall increase of four due to 2 cases being reclassified), with four of today’s new cases have linked to known outbreaks – two linked to the Chadstone Shopping Centre outbreak, one linked to a Dandenong household outbreak and one linked to aged care. The other two cases remain under investigation. As you may remember in last night's entry, I mentioned a possible link between the cluster at The Butcher Club at Chadstone and Oddfellows Café in Kilmore, well there is now a connection. The outbreak at Chadstone now has 31 cases over 16 suburbs including Kilmore, Cranbourne West, Abbotsford, Mulgrave, Noble Park and Melton. What I don't get is why would people as far away as Kilmore, Cranbourne West, Abbotsford, Mulgrave, Noble Park and Melton needs to go to Chadstone to get meat? And why would someone from Melbourne travel to Kilmore to drink at a cafe? Information on the outbreak, including where you can get tested is available at the following website (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Chadstone and Kilmore outbreaks).

Sadly, there has been two new deaths in the past 24 hours, one woman in her 80s and one man in his 90s. One of the two deaths occurred prior to yesterday and both deaths has been linked to known outbreaks at aged care facilities.

And now the data for today (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - Wednesday 7 October):

  • A total of 2,780,231 test results have been received which is an increase of 16,429 since yesterday.
Of the 206 current active cases in Victoria:
  • 204 are in metropolitan Melbourne under the Second Step of our roadmap
  • Two are in regional local government areas under the Third Step of our roadmap. Mitchell has two active cases.
Of the total cases:

  • 5 active cases are currently linked to the Springvale shared accommodation outbreak (total cases: 8)

If you are interested in the case numbers and outbreaks, there is a page on Victoria's Department of Health and Human Services website (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Case locations and outbreaks). And like overseas, many of the deceased have been over 70. 344 of the 809 deaths from coronavirus had been in their 80s (163 males and 181 females) and 293 had been 90+ (106 males and 187 females). The Kalyna Care Aged Care facility here in Delahey has seen 109 confirmed cases and 26 deaths. Arcare Sydenham Aged Care Facility has seen 51 confirmed cases and six deaths. There has been 38 deaths at Epping Gardens Aged Care (220 confirmed cases) and 45 deaths at St. Basil's Homes for the Aged in Victoria (223 confirmed cases). I didn't get around to do the online course today, but I will tomorrow, and later on tonight, I will be studying Korean. Apart from that, today has largely been quiet. I went for a walk, but I don't think I will tomorrow because rain is expected. I watched some television tonight, but lost ABC again due to the rain.

TOMORROW: Online course and study Korean. And tomorrow night, listen to the radio.

See you tomorrow.

As you may be aware, there will be an announcement in around a week's time about which restrictions will be lifted. I know the opposition here in Victoria wants us to reopen quickly. While I support reopening, if we reopen too quickly, we would be in danger of a third wave here in Victoria. Many parts of Europe reopened too quickly, and look what happened. I know it is tempting to reopen quickly as we are getting closer to summer (and Christmas and New Year and my birthday which is between Christmas and New Year), but we must be conservative in our approach and go slow and steady. It may not be popular, and I know conspiracy theorists (such as followers of the far-right wing QAnon) will cry blue murder if restrictions is not lifted, sometimes politicians will have to make unpopular choices to keep us safe.

As you may be aware, in many parts of the world, there are students doing classes (at all level of education) online. I found an interesting article on The Conversation about what happened when it came to education during the polio epidemic in Chicago back in 1937 where radio was used to help education. So even though it appears to be a new thing, remote learning has actually been done before, but unlike back in 1937, we have the internet. However, there seems to be a digital divide in which there are some people who have the internet, and others who don't have access to the Internet. You can check out the article at the following address (Remote learning isn't new: Radio instruction in the 1937 polio epidemic).

Today, I did an online course, and I will study Korean later on tonight. I watched the Reply of Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese to Tuesday night's Budget (I am a current affairs junkie) and I am currently listening to the radio. I also got my ballot pack for the council election and I have already filled it in, ready to post it tomorrow. And if you are voting in council elections here in Victoria, post your completed ballot material BEFORE 1800 on Friday 23 October. I will be mailing my off tomorrow.

TOMORROW: Study Korean and listen to the radio.

See you tomorrow.

Today we had 11 new cases of coronavirus (an overall increase of 10 due to one case reclassified), with six of today’s new cases being linked to known outbreaks and complex cases. Two cases are linked to aged care (Uniting AgeWell Preston) and single cases are linked to the Frankston family outbreak, the Oddfellows Café in Kilmore and the Chadstone Shopping Centre outbreak. The one remaining case is linked to a complex case. The other five cases remain under investigation. The new case that was linked to to the Oddfellows Café is linked to a close contact of a known case and was already self-isolating. And for the first time in several months, there are less than 200 active cases.

Today I studied a bit of Korean, and I feel that I might be getting the hang of the language, and I will do more tomorrow. Today, I also went for a walk (and mailed my ballot paper for the council elections, which are currently taking place here in Victoria by postal vote), and tonight, I watched a bit of television, and I am now listening to the radio.

There are now concerns that we may not reach the target to enter the next stage of relaxation, and as mentioned in the article on The Conversation, the chances of Melbourne reaching the target is less than 50% (Sorry Melbourne. The chance of reaching an average 5 COVID-19 cases by mid-October is under 50%). I personally believe that we need to be conservative when it comes to relaxing the rules because if we open up too quickly, then we could be at risk of going back to square one. So while I support reopening, we can't do it too quickly, even if it means cancelling events such as the New Years' Eve Fireworks in the city (I go to the Docklands site on New Years' Eve) which I am prepared to accept if it means lives are saved. I don't want a third wave here in Melbourne, so I am willing to accept a cancellation this year if it means lives are saved and we avoid a third wave (which I am concerned may happen if we open up too quickly).

TOMORROW: Study Korean and listen to the radio.

See you tomorrow.

Today here in Victoria, we had 14 new cases (an overall increase of 12 due to 2 cases being reclassified) with six of today’s 14 new cases are linked to known outbreaks and complex cases, five cases are household contacts linked to Eastern Health Box Hill Hospital and one of those household contacts is also linked to an aged care facility. There is also one new case linked to the Oddfellows Café in Kilmore. The other eight cases remain under investigation (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - Saturday 10 October). There are now 10 active cases linked to Box Hill Hospital with five new cases from one family being added yesterday. Currently, this outbreak comprises three staff members, one patient and six household contacts. All cases are isolated and close contacts for the Box Hill staff identified and quarantined.

The 14-day running average has increased slightly to 9.5, up from 9.4 yesterday, and it is looking like we might not get what we want next Sunday, which is a relaxation of restrictions. As mentioned a number of times, while I support reopening, we need to be conservative in how we get out of restrictions. We cannot do it too quickly, as if we go too quickly, then we would be back to square one. I am also concerned that the coronavirus could see the rise of the far-right in many countries, which I am worried about how the lockdowns that are needed to fight coronavirus will fuel the far-right (Right-wing terrorists will never stand back). I am now looking at moving overseas to get away from the far-right. Personally, I am now more scared of the Neil Erikksons and the Blair Cottrells of Australia than I am of coronavirus (I understand coronavirus is horrible, but the far-right are even worse). I am now contemplating moving to Korea earlier than planned to get out before the far-right gets to power in Australia (even to study)

For the third day running, there has been no deaths from coronvirus.

And now to the data for today (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - Saturday 10 October):

Today, I did a bit of shopping for dinner tonight. I initially went to Woolworths at Watergardens, but I went to Coles at Keilor Central due to a long line trying to get into Woolworths. Personally, I think they should open the Woolworths at the southern end of the shopping centre (which is currently closed) to maintain the social distancing (which is very poor in my opinion). I also did a bit of writing and I am currently listening to the radio.

Today, I mainly listened to the radio and did a online First Aid course, as well as a bonus course on Workplace Infection Control via St John Victoria. I am planning to do a couple of mental health courses in the next couple of weeks through St John Victoria (which I think is important in this environment to keep yourself mentally fit and healthy as we are more likely working from home due to coronavirus). And if you are in Victoria, from 2359 tonight, all Victorians must wear a fitted face mask when they leave home, no matter where they live. More details are at Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Face masks: whole of Victoria.

TOMORROW: Homework Club (via Zoom) and watch television at night.

Today we had 15 new cases of coronavirus here in Victoria, and no deaths in part 24 hours.

Normally, I rely on the media release, but the media release is not up tonight, so unfortunately, there is not much data for us to look at (I will put up a link tomorrow night). It is highly unlikely we would get down to a 14-day running average of 5, so it looks like some of the restrictions will remain. As you know, while I support reopening, we cannot do it too quickly as if we go too quickly, like some people want to, then we would be back to square one. We need to take a conservative approach in ending lockdown and not go too quickly.

Today was an intense day for me when it came to studying Korean, and I feel I am getting the hang of the language. I found a new podcast to help me with Korean. Today I had homework club, but I didn't start until 5pm today and it was only a game time thing as there were more adults than students. I also watched a bit of television tonight.

TOMORROW: Course via CAE and study Korean, which I am now beginning to enjoy.

The cases in Shepparton are linked to the outbreak at the Butchers Club at Chadstone, which was also the source of the outbreak at Kilmore, which has been mentioned in this blog. It is also believed that this super-spreader also visited Benalla, so watch this space.

Today, I mostly listened to the radio during the day. I didn't get to do what I planned, but I did listen to a Korean podcast. I watched a bit of television. I watched Gruen tonight, and Todd Sampson's t-shirt tonight, with 2020 on a dumpster and fire coming out of the dumpster. Best reflects 2020.

TOMORROW: Get some rolls and study Korean. And do the online course.

See you tomorrow.

END OF DAY 99
Cases in Victoria in Past 24 Hours:
6 new cases (175 active cases) 816 lives lost (0 new deaths in past 24 hours)
Metropolitan Melbourne
14-Day Running Average
8.9Regional Victoria
14-Day Running Average
0.6

Firstly, I like to acknowledge the fiftieth anniversary of the collapse of the West Gate Bridge which occurred this day in 1970 which claimed the lives of 35 workers. You can read about the disaster at (West Gate Bridge - Wikipedia), and it was this disaster that led to the creation of WorkSafe and other protections for workers here in Victoria. As someone from the western suburbs of Melbourne, this is an tragic, but important part of our region's history (my family used to cross the West Gate Bridge when we drove to visit relatives on live on the other side of the city prior to the construction of CityLink). There is a memorial near the site of this tragedy, and if you go to Monash University, Clayton Campus, you can see some remains of the bridge (note the campus is currently closed due to coronavirus).

Today here in Victoria, we recorded six new cases of coronavirus, an overall increase of four due to two cases being reclassified; and the 14-day running average in Metropolitan Melbourne is 8.9. It is certain that we won't get down to 5, but from what I am hearing, Premier Daniel Andrews will make some concessions on Sunday. There are reports that the 5 kilometre travel restriction will be widen to 20 kilometres (Victorian Premier flags eased restrictions for Melbourne ahead of Sunday), which I would support, but we need to be conservative and not go too quickly, especially because of what is going on over in Europe.

There has been no new deaths in the past 24 hours, so the death toll remains 816.

And now to the data for today (Department of Health and Human Services Victoria | Coronavirus update for Victoria - 15 October 2020):

There was a story on ABC's 7:30 tonight about coronavirus in Wyndham, which has more cases than anywhere else in Australia. You can view it on ABC iView or you can watch it tonight at 2330 AEDT (2300 ACDT in Adelaide, 2230 AEST in Brisbane, 2200 ACST in Darwin and 2030 AWST in Perth) on ABC News. I watched it as I have relatives in the Wyndham area, and following whats happening in that particular area. My LGA is second on the list.

Today, I finished another online course and did a bit of studying Korean. I also did some writing. I watched some television (including watching a bit of 7:30 as mentioned above) and I am currently listening to the radio.

TOMORROW: Study Korean and listen to the radio. I will be watching television tomorrow night.

See you tomorrow.
