It's deeply rooted in each states history (sorta)
Cheeseheads- Wisconsin makes a lot of cheese. More can be found on this website
Buckeyes- A nut that is native to ohio. Also a delectable treat made from peanut butter, powdered sugar, and dipped in chocolate. More can be found here.
Hoosier- A nickname people used to use to refer to Indiana. More info can be found here on hoosiers.

I did my research. They all make sense, in their own ways.

I love these nicknames you americans give each other!

And we've just dipped our toes in the pool of nicknames, both good and bad, that americans can use to refer to each other. There's a lot of derragatory (or bad) nicknames though. I'd rather not talk about those.
