Re: Rain Dance Messages 11: Swift Swim and Thunder Away

Anyway back on speeding. It would be hypocritical for me to say I don't speed. I know it is wrong but I still do it but you just have to be cautious and very aware. There is being bloody stupid and speeding in areas that would be absolutely stupid to do so and areas where you can get away with it. We need to remember that speeding is not the most major cause of death on the roads.
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Speeding is one of the main causes of death of Western Australian roads. Others being fatigue, alcohol, and distractions (phones).

Police have pulled people for over 1 kmph but that's really, really rare and kind of pointless. You can easily take it to court and state that the police radars aren't 100% reliable which is the truth. That's why they don't generally pull people around 1-5 km/hr because their radars are pretty unreliable as well. Also what's the point of pulling someone getting pulled over for over 1 clicks the speed limit? I mean they waste time when there could be other issues on the road or someone else speeding faster by a long shot.
In the case i mentioned, the cop in question didn't use a speed gun. He drove behind the guy and found he was doing 61 in a 60 zone. The fine was eventually canceled.

This is from 2011 so the percentages may be slightly off but notice how speeding is number 2.

I agree that cars aren't toys but it is naive to think that people don't speed and speeding drivers are the worst drivers. We do not talk about the serious risk associated with fatigue, conditions or the risk even associated with driving slower, a lot slower than the speed limit. I also agree that speeding is a serious problem but I still speed when I can and need to regardless of time or whatever, I just pick my sections whilst being aware of my surroundings, nearby cars, people and such along with my braking points, intersections and roundabouts.

I'm not saying what I'm doing is right, it is completely wrong but let's not be naive and state that speeding drivers are the worst thing on the roads.

I think that graph above nullifies your argument, but i'd just like to say that i never speed. I always stay 5kph under the speed limit. Or more if the weather conditions are not favourable.

A few years ago, WA police ran an advertising campaign

Warning, above TV ad is a little graphic. It was run by WA police in 2004, among others.

Due to the graphic nature of the ads, i have put them in a spoiler tag.

The graph didn't nullify my argument. My argument wasn't that speeding wasn't a major cause of death on the roads, I said it was one of the major causes along with the other causes that weren't given enough attention as the graph shows. I said most major cause which shows that there are other major causes along with speeding such as fatigue and inattention to detail which again the graph as shown even though the graph is 4 years old which doesn't really work for road statistics because 4 years is outdated which is why generally you should use facts from at the worst 2 years. There are major issues with a graph with the time difference to now and when it was created with its stats. Lastly on your graph, you have stated that it shows that speeding is the major but if you look at the percentages to be the major it should have the highest percentages while the other factors have very low percentages. It does not show that, which states that speeding is not the only major factors or as I said the most major factor in driver fatalities on the road. Now if we look at fatigue, it is a grey area because fatigue can be associated with inattention as if you are fatigued, your concentration, focus and attention is diverted and your reactions are a tad slower.

Now with your example with the police. The fine was cancelled because there are too many factors which I've stated that work in favor of the driver especially if the driver takes the fine into court. So that example does not hold up at all because you stated that the person in the example was not fined or penalized.

It is good that you don't speed and you should in theory continue that way but speeding even by a little doesn't make a driver bad at all. It is a major generalization to believe that. A driver that is not good to me, is someone who is not aware with his or her surroundings both within in the car and out (inclusive of environment, other cars and people) and someone who doesn't obey the general rules of the road which includes driving on the wrong side of the road, not giving way to state examples. However even a simple mistake doesn't make a bad driver. Would it be unfair to penalize someone with a title of a bad driver if they made a little mistake in let's say reversing into a car accidentally when pulling out of their driveway? No as it happens to everybody.

The point is that speeding even if it is wrong doesn't always make a driver bad. It is good that you don't speed but let's not act like it makes you a better driver than someone that goes over 5km while being very attentive and cautious on the road to the environment. Everyone is generally a good driver otherwise they wouldn't have their licence. Yes, you get people with poor choices on the road along with stupidity like not giving way on the roundabout or changing lanes without indicating but I wouldn't say that they are bad drivers...later on.

Anyway if you want to carry this forward, you could make a thread about in SB because I don't think other people would or have appreciated this going on and on. @Bomyne

Re: Rain Dance Messages 11: Swift Swim and Thunder Away

are you arguing about motorist speeding?

lol speedboats
there are no speed limits, other than "no wake" zones and a few very rare channels.

No wake means that the boat can't do this:
boat-wake.jpg

Anyway, wakes destroy docks and boats by bashing them into eachother.

Guess what speedboaters do? Yep, you guessed it right!
