Movies/TV Rate the Last Movie you Watched

Hounds of Love (2016)

A couple who kidnap and terrorise a young woman in the suburbs of Perth, and was loosely based upon the crimes of David and Catherine Birnie.

Came across this film on the Arrow Video website when buying Thief (1981)

Pretty intense in places, uncomfortably so at times. All in all, well worth a watch.

7.5/10

Interstellar - good solid 7/10 right up til the schmaltzy, floating in a parallel dimension 'library' talking to a Hal 9000 clone cause we've run out of ideas/budget/whatever, malarkey
:p

David - 6/10. A movie about David Rothenberg (now known as Dave Dave), whose mentally unstable father set him on fire. This movie would have been great if it wasn't so cheesy, namely the cheesy music and the Rothenberg actors' voices being utterly painful to listen to. David's squeaking and his parents' nasally whining killed the movie for me.

The Elizabeth Smart Story (2005 version) - 8.5/10. Definitely one of the better TV movies. There's very little in the way of manufactured drama, and everyone fulfilled their roles nicely...though I do think some subplots weren't necessary and it could have benefitted from showing more of Elizabeth herself, but a later movie version would remedy this.

Lifted (2010 movie) 4/10. Only two words describe this movie: Emotionally manipulative. The story is bland, the characters are one-note, the movie has this subplot about the main character being chased by bullies but just drops it without any attempt at resolution whatsoever, and the ending twist was so obvious you could see it a mile away, and that didn't make it any less bad. Seriously, this movie just felt like a rip-off of other similar movies, and it had a stupid, mealymouthed ending to top it all off. Gag me.

The Afflicted - 2.5/10. This was just bad. The acting was histrionic, there are several scenes that are just there to pad out the movie (Why did it feel the need to drag out a scene where the preacher goes to a strip club, complete with shots of a woman's uncensored boobs?!), and it was just a grimdark mess all around. Seriously, and people say my stories are grimdark and edgy.

Black Widow, 7/10

Not one of the better MCU movies, but I enjoyed watching it and it still has some things going for it. It kind of begs the question whether this film was really necessary for the MCU but I still think it had some things that were really meaningful for Black Widow as a character.

Сенки - 2007- 8/10
language: Macedonian - movie title translates to "Shadows"
directed by Милчо Манчевски (Milcho Manchevski)

really enjoyed the horror movie, it had it's suspenseful moments, its scary moments
must be freaky confronting the same people who have died over an over the Dr. Lazar Perkov (actor Borče Nacev) gets to confornt them every time
like with most movies, its also going to have a few fair share of slightly boring moments of just speaking

scary music at times in well placed areas make it sscary

Main downside is probably 95% of the movie I don't understand it, I don't speak Macedonian, do get a nice good idea what's going on not just from the music and scary moments, but from the scenes themselves.,, how the actors move, and their voice reaction to the scene

by the way, Yes I seen the movie once with English subtitles

The Visit
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Released in: 2015
Rating: 7.8

It was way more disturbing and creepy than I thought. I'm not a fan of the found footage film style, although it gives a more realistic feel, it makes me dizzy. The constant "rapping" from the kid was really obnoxious, but aside from those two things, it was fun and scary to watch. Very creepy.

Teacher (2019) - 6.5/10. This was...okay. Typical thriller stuff, and it's not exactly the most nuanced tackling of bullying. I did think the twist with the bully was really forced and I saw it coming from a mile away. I did find myself feeling genuinely sympathetic to the titular teacher, and the acting was fine.

American Girl: Lea To The Rescue - 5/10. Schmaltzy, annoying, cliche, and yet another movie that portrayed Brazil and native tribes using the same tired stereotypes over and over again. And BY GOD, Lea was annoying as hell!! Not only does she absolutely refuse to follow basic orders, she is constantly getting into trouble, and is constantly waxing about how right she is about everything. All the other characters are about as dynamic as toilet paper. NOT one of the better American Girl movies by a long shot.

Girl in the Basement - 7.5/10. Alright, I guess. Nothing ground breaking, and I liked it well enough. But I do feel like more could have been done with it. Plus, this movie is based on the same real life case that inspired the movie Room (based on the book by Emma Donoghue), and I feel like the latter tackled this subject better.

Nutcracker Fantasy - 8.5/10. Wow, this turned out a lot better than I expected. A stop motion anime movie by Sanrio telling its own version of the Nutcracker play. That play is pretty hard to adapt into an animated medium, but I think Sanrio pulled it off well. Even the English dub was a lot better than I thought it'd be, a few stiff performances not withstanding. This really has the look and feel of a Rankin-Bass movie, and even the stop motion works really well. Definitely recommend this one for anyone looking for a good adaptation of the story for once.

Left For Dead: The Ashley Reeves Story - 8/10. Also better than I expected, and surprisingly very nuanced and well written. I like that the characters were portrayed as flawed but good people who just happened to make mistakes, and that the movie made it a point that those mistakes should never be an excuse to blame the victim for what happened to them. I do kind of wish the movie explored the villain's backstory a little more, but I can understand why they didn't, as the movie was more about the aftermath and how the Reeves' dealt with it. Definitely one of the better modern Lifetime movies.

Worthless (2018) - 4.5/10. Bleh, typical bog standard horror movie, and an emotionally manipulative one as well. I predicted every single plot beat, and even saw the ending coming from a mile away based on how unbelievable the premise turned out to be. I get what its message is supposed to be, but I've seen other non-horror movies do this way better. Don't waste your time on this one.

Free Guy, 8/10
It was pretty good, it was a meant to be funny, so not really any good plot, but thats fine for a comedy, made me laugh a few times, and I didnt get bored or anything

Parasite 9.5/10
It was very good and symbolic, and even though it wasn't meant to be a horror movie, it still was more freaky than most horror movies. However
When the family had the house to themselves, and had a ton of wine and food and stuff, I thought that was a bit unrealistic and dumb, they should've had a plan or something, especially since the family is so clever

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, 9/10. So good! It works both as a CGI action adventure spectacle (but seriously, the martial arts choreography is also incredible) and as an emotional and heartfelt story about family and heritage. And it has plenty of surprises for hardcore MCU fans (without alienating casual filmgoers).

I should also mention it is pretty funny (and not in a forced way the MCU is sometimes guilty of) and well-acted. Simu Liu is a star in the making! But it was also awesome to see veteran actors like Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung have a chance to shine and Tony Leung's turn as the villain is especially among the best villain performances in the MCU in my opinion.

Love Thy Neighbor - 7.5/10. This was fine. I remember watching this years ago, and liked it back then. I still do now, though some subplots it throws in feel really contrived and pointless. Eh, it's nothing special, but it's still better than most old Lifetime movies I've seen.

Boyz n the Hood - 5.5/10. I wanted to like this more than I did. This would have been a great movie if it weren't for the gratuitous sex scenes and the characters constantly dropping F-bombs every two seconds. Plus, I only really liked three characters in this movie, nobody else, as the rest of them acted like complete idiots. Uh, hello?! Does it NOT occur to some people to call 911 when they see somebody get shot?! Eh, at least the soundtrack and commentary on gentrification was good.

United 93 (Film) and Flight 93 (TV movie) - 6/10 and 7/10. I thought I saw the latter, but it turns out I saw the former instead. Both were okay tributes to the people who died in the titular airplane on September 11th, though, ironically, I think the TV movie portrayed the subject better. It made more of an effort to make things feel more personal, and I actually knew who the characters were, whereas the former seemed to focus too much on the technical aspects and the command center scenes.

Cinderella (Disney 1950 animated version) - 7.5/10. This was okay. Not the best Disney movie ever, as the supporting cast hijacks the movie a lot and the prince is given next to no personality or development, but it does its job. Not sure if I prefer it over the 2015 version, as while that one remedied a lot of the issues I mentioned, it also had plenty of problems of its own (Like making Cinderella more passive and stupid even though she's touted as strong and independent when she isn't). Eh, I'd call it average, but it at the very least tries. Still think Ever After is a better Cinderella movie though.

Stranger by the Shore (Umibe no Etranger) - 8/10. Now this was a really cute, wholesome romance anime! Two guys meet and fall in love, but one of them has to deal with their own internalized homophobia as a result of his coming out going horribly. It's beautifully animated, I found the characters' chemistry and conflict to be well done, and it actually avoids a lot of the pitfalls and cliches that most BL/yaoi anime tend to indulge in. I'm also glad they chose not to adapt one scene from the manga that I felt was really unnecessary. Though...knowing how the sequel manga turns out, I can't really recommend it wholeheartedly, but on its own, it's a nice little treat.

1, 2, 3, All Eyes On Me - 3/10. Man, this short film was just BAAAD. I would have rated this so much higher if the short didn't seem intent on breaking absolutely every cardinal rule when it came to dealing with a school shooting! Seriously, I've seen Lifetime movies deal with the subject with less idiocy than this did!

Bonnie and Clyde - 6.5/10. Eh, this was okay, but I didn't really connect with it. I didn't find the characters to be all that interesting, but the premise was okay, for the most part. Definitely liked the ending and the soundtrack being nothing but banjo music, even if it made some scenes come across as being really cheesy as a result. Also, Blanche was little more than a screaming harpy who was useless the whole time, and I really don't blame her real life counterpart for not liking her portrayal here.

Fine China - 8.5/10. Now this was one of the better short films I've seen! A low key musical about grief over the loss of a loved one. Definitely like the direction taken here, from the choreography to the fact that the setting is limited to only one location. Everything is done with purpose here, though I'm not quite sure what the deal is with the white face makeup.

The Ransom of Red Chief (1975 version) - 7.5/10. This was a good one. The cast was fairly good, and the premise made for good slapstick comedy. It helped that it was only half an hour long and didn't drag itself out longer than necessary. My only issue was that the video quality wasn't very good, but I can't be too mad at that, since this is an old short film and it probably never got a proper remaster. It's fine for what it is.

Queen Christina - 8.5/10. Also a lot better than I expected. It was surprisingly subdued for a movie of this genre and caliber, and the acting didn't come off as overblown or cheesy like some movies of this era tend to be. I actually felt somewhat invested in Christina and Antonio's relationship, though apparently the movie takes a lot of liberties in regards to historical facts about the actual Queen Christina. But even with that knowledge, I found this to be very enjoyable.

Titanic - 8/10. Kinda surprised I never rated this despite having seen it before. But yeah, I can see why this movie is so revered. I don't think it's the best movie ever, but it does have a lot going for it. I liked the romance between Rose and Jack, the movie made great use of the setting, and despite several artistic liberties, it's pretty clear the producers did a lot of research that went into making the setting feel authentic and lived in. My only complaints about it are that the 1912 dialogue felt too modern at times, some scenes go on for way longer than they should, and that Cal is just another cartoony bad guy. But this is still better than all the animated rip-offs that came after it.

Blair Witch Project: 8/10. It was terrifying despite not having any jumpscares, or anything like that. The way they filmed it was just so great, and the way they advertised it as a true story was too. I was actually anxious for the characters during the whole movie, which is something I don't usually do. It was just all around creepy

Dune (2021): 9.5/10. The cinematography was OUTSTANDING. The enviornments, atmostphere, costumes, mood, energy, everything was on point visual (and audio) wise. Story wise however, it was a bit slow, still an amazing movie though

The Final - 1/10. Dear lord, this movie was just bad. A nonsensical, overly edgy plot, deplorable characters, idiotic writing decisions all around, and is straight up torture porn. Also, what the hell is Lindsay Seidel doing here?! Was this where she got her start?! It's a good thing she eventually moved on to dubbing anime, because she deserves way better than to be involved with this trash heap!

The Prisoner of Zenda (1952 version) - 8/10. This was pretty good, all things considered. I liked Rassendyl as a character, the story was intriguing, and I appreciate that the movie didn't go for the typical happily ever after ending by not letting the main guy get the girl at the end. But many of the characters were hard to follow and I could barely remember who was who most of the time.

Hotel Rwanda - 6.5/10. This movie was just okay. This feels like Schindler's List if it was about the Rwandan genocide, which isn't a bad thing, and it is based on actual events, namely that of Paul Rusesabagina helping Hutu and Tutsi refugees by safeguarding them in his hotel. I honestly would have rated this movie a lot higher...but after finding out the real life person the MC is based on turned out to actually be a criminal and terrorist who extorted the refugees he helped, among other crimes, I can't rate this high in good faith.

9 to 5 - 8/10. This was actually pretty decent. I love the theme song, the three main characters are fun to follow, and their plight, while dated by today's standards, is pretty relatable for people who have been in similar positions. But I did think some of the comedy during the second half didn't really work and seemed to clash with the rest of the movie. But I like it well enough.
