The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - 6/10

The third installment of The Mummy trilogy, it's an alright movie but doesn't really compare to the first and second movies imo. Especially since they don't have the original Evy (though I do know why Rachel Weisz wasn't in this one and it's understandable) and she is pretty OOC, also the fact that Evy and Rick's son Alex grew up to be a jerk "You fought the same mummy twice." okay but your dad also fought Imhotep's underlings from both movies and went up against the Scorpion King, which you also help caused being resurrected by stupidly putting on the Bracelet of Anubis. "Good going dad. You've raised another mummy." um what? Boy I know you weren't a thought yet in the first movie, but it was your mother who raised Imhotep from the dead in the first movie and in the second one it was the villains wanting to bring him back again that raised him, then there was your dumbass putting on the bracelet and yeah I better stop ranting. Overall it's an alright movie that has some good action scenes and it has Jet Li, so that's another plus.

Quick thoughts on a crap ton of movies under the cut!

Laputa: Castle In The Sky - 8.5/10. This one's really good! A sweet, charming, high flying action/adventure movie that still has a lot of heart. The main villain is stereotypically evil and doesn't have a lot of depth, and Pazu's English voice makes him sound way too old, but other than those things, it's still a fun movie.

Escaping The Madhouse: The Nellie Bly Story - 7/10. Also surprisingly decent. Yeah, it's another Lifetime movie, but I feel their period pieces tend to be better than their modern fare. I do think the villains are also too stereotypically evil and some of the other characters are one note, but Nellie herself is interesting and intriguing, and the movie did show how she impacted the world as a whole, so I'll give it credit for that.

The Prince of Egypt - 10/10. Do I even need to say it? It's an epic masterpiece of animation that deserves so much more love than it gets. Why can't more movies like this be made?! I do like it better than the original Ten Commandments from 1956 because it does more with less and doesn't drag at times. Also, Ralph Fiennes as Ramesses is awesome.

Ethel & Ernest - 7.5/10. An interesting, low key, sympathetic character study of an ordinary married couple going through extraordinary events. I love how subdued the movie is in that it doesn't try to make big drama out of anything, keeping things realistic and down to earth. That said, I do think showing a horse pooping on screen right in the beginning was unnecessary. I wasn't a fan of the animation at first, but it grew on me after a while, and the time skips tend to be sporadic and jarring at times, leaving some events unaddressed.

Pokemon The Movie 2000 - 6/10. Meh, not one of the better Pokemon movies. The villain is bland, the side characters were kind of annoying, Lugia's just there to look cool, the premise is badly executed, and Ash being the chosen one just because of one word in some dumb prophecy is just plain stupid. The animation is nice, though.

Enough - 5/10. Just another generic Lifetime movie about a woman who's at first abused my her husband and then rises up to fight back. Though Jennifer Lopez does a great job as the lead, and I did like that the main character took lessons in fighting and self-defense.

An American Girl: Chrissa Stands Strong - 6.5/10. A cute little bullying PSA. Better than most. The mean girl doesn't get a whole lot of development though, and we never find out why she's the way she is. I am, however, glad that the adults actually do something and try to help instead of being useless and incompetent, which is REALLY refreshing, especially for movies aimed at kids. The credits song is terrible, though. Way too poppy and overly saccharine.

Love You To Death - 6/10. Another Lifetime movie that just came out. Decent, but I've seen better ones. Also, I dare anyone to try and tell me that this wasn't inspired by the famous Gypsy Blanchard case.

Liz and the Blue Bird - 9/10. Very beautifully animated and surprisingly adorable! A low-key, subdued character study about two high school girls in an orchestra and their worries about their friendship and their future. While it does drag in places and rarely anything happens, I didn't feel bored one bit. It's soooo refreshing to see a movie involving high school girls that doesn't devolve into screaming melodrama or super grand spectacles. Oh, and I'm not even familiar with the original source material.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms - 4/10. Generic Disney fantasy movie. All style and barely any substance. Eh, it was still cute. I'll probably watch it again just to kill some time, and I do genuinely like MacKenzie Foy as an actress. But it says something when the novelization turns out to be way better.

Harold and Maude - 3/10. Ugh! Hated this one. Nothing made any sense at all, the romance was terrible, the deliberate tonal shifts were really jarring, and I find it REALLY hard to believe that this kid managed to somehow survive all of those so-called staged suicide attempts!

Pokemon: The Power of Us - 8.5/10. Wow! I haven't been this impressed with a Pokemon movie for a long time! It's a LOT better than I thought it'd be, and yay, another movie where legendary Pokemon don't talk! Definitely one of the better movies for sure, and I think this is the first one that doesn't have a real villain.

Watership Down - 9/10. Another great movie, and a very underrated one at that. Who knew a movie about rabbits would be so brutal and violent? But it's not over-the-top and the violence actually serves a purpose. I'm a fan of the book too, and I think the movie did it justice.

The Hate U Give - 1/10. Worst movie I've ever seen. Just as bad as the book. A two-hour long after school special that's trying way too hard to push a racist and anti-police agenda. Don't watch this one. Not worth it at all. Seriously.

The Breakfast Club - 3/10. My mom loves this movie, but I just didn't like it. Seriously? THIS is considered the quintessential teen movie? Ugh. Nearly everyone save for three characters was a jerk, Bender is just a perverted asshole, the teacher is especially bad (He'd get arrested for all the crap he pulls if this movie were made today), the whole movie was dull and boring, and I really don't like the idea of Claire getting with Bender after all the crap he put her through. This movie really hasn't aged well, and I can't fathom why this is considered a classic.

Kitbull - 9/10. An absolutely adorable little animated short film! Dog and cat lovers should check this one out, because it's a heartwarming and even sad little short film. It also portrays a pit bull in a sympathetic light, which is rare these days. It's available on YouTube if anyone wants to check it out, and it's so worth it.

Robbery (1967) - 8.5/10

Just been re-issued on Blu-Ray and looks really good.

Enjoyed it a lot. Great car chase sequence (director Peter Yates went on to direct Bullitt) and a great cast. A really good old-school British drama. I think this must have been a big influence on The Sweeney.

Sully - 8.5/10. Wow, I didn't think I'd like something like this. A Clint Eastwood film based on the Hudson River plane crash incident in 2009? This could have easily been a huge disaster, but everything was done really well. The acting and the drama were down to earth, the characters were intriguing, and the story hit all the right beats without trying to be more than what it's supposed to be. I think I found another favorite live-action movie.

The Lion King - 5/10. I'd rate this higher if Timon and Pumbaa weren't so obnoxious. Seriously, they killed just about every scene they appeared in. Plus, I do think TLK is kind of overrated, though I do acknowledge that most of it is good. Sorry, TLK fans!

Hairspray (2007 version) - 7/10. This was cute. The songs were fun, though some of them went on for too long, and the setup was schmaltzy but good. It does border on saccharine a lot of the time, and...did we REALLY need John Travolta dressing in drag? Why not cast a regular heavyset woman as Tracy's mom instead of putting a guy in a fat suit and a dress?

Gods of Egypt (2016): 6/10. the Hollywood whitewashing controversy killed the movie before it came out, but the CGI was amazing, and I honestly had a few laughs that I wasn't expecting. Egyptian mythology needs more love!

The Road To El Dorado (2000) 8/10: criminally underrated flick. Laughed a lot! It's Tough To Be A God was a solid musical number.

The Lion King (1994): 10/10 This may be the rose-tinted glasses, but this is easily my favorite Disney movie ever.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:
I sincerely don't know how to rate this. I sincerely want to like this movie, but the way they undid Jacob's ending was off-putting for me. The only thing that could make that worse would be if they said his bakery failed.

The Lobster

I saw trailers for this movie and thought it looked weird, but not my type of weird. Later, my friend came to me telling me I had to see it, so I watched it with him. This has to be one of the downright weirdest movies I’ve ever seen. It’s a black comedy, but the kind that I’ve never really seen before. It’s hard to explain; when I hear “black comedy”, my mind goes to a movie that’s just a comedy with R-rated subject matter and language. But The Lobster is different, it’s like the first movie I’ve seen that felt like what the real definition of a black comedy should be. When you think about the events of the movie and the dystopia it takes place in, it’s depressing, but the way that the dystopia forces these people to act, the situations it forces them into, are somehow funny. Maybe the world is so depressing that it’s funny. I nearly laughed when a dog was beaten to death! No other movie has made me feel this way. It has a pretentious streak so it’s not the best movie I’ve ever seen, but man, this is a movie I’m gonna look back on that was truly envelope-pushing in my time. I guess... 8/10?

Just returned from cinema after watching "Captain Marvel" and I give it strong 8/10.
Major, minor and all-in-between spoilers below.
That movie was GREAT. Just the sheer continuity porn coming with it being the chronologically second movie in the franchise was already enough to make me go "squee" internally - from
reapperance by Ronan (even if he ended up being little more than a glorified cameo)
, through
the ship heroes use through most of the movie bearing a striking ressemblance to S.H.I.E.L.D. Quinjets
to
finally explaining how Fury ended up losing his eye by "trusting the wrong person"
. And many more.
Yet it managed to be much better than just riding on continuity nods. It was genuinely funny (for once aliens DO actually realise how terrible they are at passing themselves as humans, somebody finally acknowledges that S.H.I.E.L.D. putting their logo on everything they own is a terrible practice for secret agency, and seeing rough and though Nicholas Joseph Fury go into full cuteness overload mode at sight of a cat is a sight to behold) and heartwarming, as well as having some stunning visual effects (digitaly making Samuel L. Jackson 25 years younger was nothing compared to the
already mentioned two posts above alien cat
or the way Skrulls were rendered... okay, I admit it, they shapeshifting could've been better, but it still didn't look bad). And while it could've been foreseen due MCU tendency to throw the comic canon out of the window for sake of twists, the reveal that
Skrulls are simply refugees hiding from oppresive Kree regime and not dangerous shapeshifting terrorists said regime paints them as
still managed to surprise me.
Now, some bad things, 'cause there still were some.
We never learn how exactly
Tesseract ended up on Mar-Vell's cruiser
. The closest thing to an explanation we got is the fact that both were connected to Project Pegasus, but it still doesn't explain much (if anything at all. Heck, from what we know it seems like it wasn't even that same Project Pegasus, but rather Project Pegasus from "Avengers" was named after Project Pegasus from "Captain Marvel") and in the end it doesn't even play any big role other than a McGuffin that could've been replaced with anything else, but was turned into another continuity nod - expect while most of them felt pretty natural, this one seemed extremely forced.
The way
Fury loses his eye...
it was supposed to be funny. Indeed, it was... but it was also so extremely and utterly anticlimatic to see
mr. "Last time I trusted someone, I lost my eye" lose said eye due to it being clawed out by a cat he adopted as a pet
that... I just don't even know how to describe it. Honestly I predicted that this will be exactly what will end up happening as soon as Fury adopted the cat, but I was still utterly disappointed.
And although amount of continuity nods was the first good point of that movie I listed, it was also... rather bad at moments with how forced some were. Like the reveal that
Nick named The Avengers after Carol's callsign from back when she was still a member of USAF
, which feels like nothing more than creators trying to retroactively associate Vers with the group.

I watched the new How To Train Your Dragon 3, and it was very good, it ended the trilogy perfectly in my opinion.

I was a bit upset when everyone in Berk had to release their dragons as a means to follow Hiccup after he allowed toothless to follow his dreams as king of the secret land of dragons.

Captain Marvel 8.5/10

This one was fun and I loved the fact that the Skrulls weren't the Big Bads. I have to admit: the Kree had alarm bells going off in my head from the start; I just didn't trust them. Also, that Flerken cat is awesome. I love Goose!

Guardians of The Galaxy vol. 2

One of my higher rated films, this is maybe my 5th / 6th rewatch? Maybe more or less but i'm not sure.

Solid 9/10 for me.

What We Do In The Shadows. I'm not usually one for movies, but I loved it. A mockumentary based around socially inept vampires? Sign me up.
