This is it, folks. It's 11th June 2010, exactly one year on from when I started this thread with no idea it'd get the kind of response it's gotten. I'm honestly so grateful to everyone who posts here and tells me what they think, it really helps me write. I genuinely don't think I would have continued for this long if you guys hadn't been cheering me on, so thank you so much, I've really enjoyed doing this for the past year. This is my 72nd chapter in 365 days, which means I've managed to maintain an average of a chapter just over every five days and I don't think I could have kept up that momentum without you guys. Ryuutakeshi and Yumega have even written their own rival's story. It means a lot that the nominations for the BMGf Fanfiction Awards have only been open for a couple of days and Rival's Story has already been nominated for Best Journey Fic and Blue and Giovanni have been nominated for Best Main Character and Villain respectively, I really do owe so much to you guys. Anyway, enough of this, it's beginning to sound like bragging when the point I was trying to make was that everyone who's posted on this thread has actually done a lot for me. I tried to make this chapter special for the anniversary, I hope you all enjoy it.
Also, here is Blazaking's 'birthday present', hopefully you guys will like it as much as I do!
Chapter 72
Red walked out of the Viridian City Gym. The battle had been surprisingly easy, although the identity of the Gym Leader had been a pretty big surprise – he had no idea how the leader of Team Rocket could’ve ended up as a Gym Leader. Red thought back to all of his Gym battles and the hardships he’d faced in them.
The first Gym Leader Red had taken on was Brock. In truth, it was pretty simple; Bulbasaur’s Vine Whip had made quick work of both Geodude and Onix. Geodude’s Defence Curl and Onix’s Bide did very little to prevent this.
Next up was Misty of Cerulean City. Again, Red didn’t have too much trouble – he’d already caught Pikachu by this point, so between Bulbasaur and Pikachu, it wasn’t exactly difficult to take out two Water types. Red had been quite unlucky with her Staryu’s Water Pulse, which confused Pikachu and gave her a chance to take it out. Rattata once again did not participate in this battle, but Bulbasaur able to take out Starmie without too much trouble at all.
Surge was the first Gym Leader to cause Red some serious problems. Red had thought that Raticate’s Dig would’ve made an Electric Gym pretty simple but he was quickly proven wrong. In fact, Raticate was defeated by Surge’s Voltorb, which outsmarted Raticate by using the Shock Wave technique, which never misses. Red was eventually able to defeat it by having Ivysaur, who had evolved while he was on the S.S. Anne and was resistant to Electric typed attacks, use Stun Spore. This allowed him to get enough of an advantage and finally take out Voltorb. Next up was Surge’s Pikachu, which Red again underestimated. Red guessed that since he had his own Pikachu, he’d be able to take care of it no problem and easily predict his moves, but he was very wrong. Before this battle, Red had never given much thought to moves that didn’t do much damage; in fact, Ivysaur’s Stun Spore was the only one he really used. Surge’s Pikachu used Double Team so effectively that Red began to give a lot more thought to defensive moves and actually went on to add a couple to his team.
Anyway, Ivysaur struggled to do anything to Surge’s Pikachu because it was moving around too fast and in spite of its resistance to Electric typed attacks, it soon fell. By this point, Red had been very concerned about the fact that his first two Pokémon had been taken out, leaving him with just Pikachu and the newest addition to his team – Mankey. After seeing the success of Ivysaur’s Stun Spore, Red decided that a Quick Attack and Thunder Wave combo from Pikachu would probably be the most effective way to take on Surge’s Pikachu... and he was right. Red’s lower levelled Pikachu managed to take out Surge’s.
Surge’s final Pokémon was a mighty Raichu, which was surprisingly easy to defeat. Pikachu managed to do a shocking amount of damage, no pun intended, managing to survive mostly due to its resistance to Electric typed attacks. Admittedly, Raichu did emerge victorious, but Mankey was able to, against all the odds, take down its gargantuan foe.
The fourth Gym Leader Red encountered was Erika. Red had already been annoyed by the time he reached her. He was annoyed that Blue seemed to be getting every single Badge ahead of him and he was annoyed that he had to have a Pokémon with Cut on his team in order to progress through the Gym. He considered going back for one but was too annoyed, the Pokémon Center was simply too far away for that to be convenient, so instead he taught Cut to his Raticate. Needless to say, after the battle, Red promptly ditched Raticate.
The battle itself was fairly simple, Erika’s Victreebel and Vileplume were very easy for the newest additions to Red’s team, Growlithe, to take care of. Tangela was a bit more problematic, but even that wasn’t too much of an issue. Tangela did manage to take out Growlithe, but fortunately, Mankey’s well timed evolution into Primeape saved the day. Red didn’t like that Erika didn’t even realise that he was there for a battle – couldn’t she tell he was a trainer?
There were two things that really got to Red about his time in Celadon City though, both of which happened after he got the Rainbow Badge from Erika. The first was his encounter with Team Rocket in the Game Corner. It wasn’t the battles there that stuck in his mind that much, they were fairly easy to overcome actually; it was the fact that that was where he obtained TM21 – Frustration. The other event that happened in Celadon City was Red’s acquisition of his Eevee. Red still found himself unable to think about Celadon City without massive pangs of guilt, it had made so much sense at the time and yet now it seemed so monstrous.
Red didn’t dwell on that thought for long though, it was too heart wrenching, he felt like he was definitely starting to make things up to Eevee, it looked so much happier these days.
The next Gym Red took on was the one in Saffron City, right after he took on Team Rocket for the second time and Blue had left him to take on Giovanni alone. It didn’t matter though, in the end he didn’t need Blue’s help – it was a tough battle, but he came out on top, just like the first time he battled Giovanni.
Sabrina was tough. Her telekinesis didn’t make things any easier either. By this time, of course, Eevee’s hate for Red had grown considerably; it had even helped him beat his hated rival, Blue. Frustration had certainly made things a hell of a lot easier in that Gym, in fact, Red owed his defeat of both Alakazam and Mr. Mime to that move. Kadabra’s Teleport was a little tricky at first, but Pikachu’s Shock Wave made light work of it. Her final Pokémon was a Venomoth, which Red objected to as it wasn’t a Psychic type. Venomoth managed to take out Venusaur with its Leech Life technique, which actually took Red by surprise with its power but was no match at all for Red’s Arcanine, who he had evolved shortly after leaving Celadon.
Koga was number six for Red. Now he was tough. His first Koffing took out Pikachu with a single Self Destruct attack and then his second Koffing did the same to Red’s Eevee, leaving Red with just four Pokémon. Then again, it left Koga with just two. Weezing’s Toxic and Smoke Screen combo had caused some issues, managing to take out Arcanine, but was soon combated by Venusaur and its helpful immunity to Poison. This immunity didn’t make things easy, Venusaur still lost a considerable amount of health, but it was certainly a lot easier than it would have been and helped Red manage to take out Weezing.
Koga’s Muk was where the real headache started. Minimize. Toxic. Acid Armour. Sludge. Those were four moves that really did not help Red at all. Venusaur couldn’t be poisoned, but was still defeated due to the Minimize stopping it from being able to hit Muk. That left Red with just two Pokémon. Red called on Snorlax, hoping that its Rest would be able to deal with Toxic, but that turned out to be a massive mistake. Muk was actually able to do so much damage to Red’s Snorlax while it was asleep that when it woke up, it didn’t even bother using Toxic again, it just used Sludge and the thing ended up fainting the following turn anyway. Lapras was successful through little more than luck, more of its attacks hit than missed and that is what enabled Red to take out Koga’s Muk and earn himself the Soul Badge.
Blaine was a strange man. Red wasn’t really sure who was in charge of the operation. He was a little worried at the start of the battle since his starter, Venusaur was weak against Blaine’s specialist type. Fortunately, Red’s newest Pokémon, Lapras, was super effective against Blaine’s Pokémon and he had recently taught it Surf, which was not only useful for travel but a pretty powerful Water typed move. Surf had rippled across the entire room and Red was fortunate enough to knock out Blaine’s partner in crime, Magmar, who appeared to be the brains of the operation. Blaine attempted to use a Revive on Magmar, but Red was able to dissuade him from doing so.
After Magmar was knocked out, Blaine’s Pokémon seemed to move as if without instruction. Unfortunately, he did use two Hyper Potions, one each on Rapidash and Arcanine, which slowed down Red’s victory a bit, but ultimately it was pretty simple. In fact, Red was amazed at how easy most of his Gym battles were.
It didn’t take Red long to figure out that the last Gym for him to visit was going to be the one in Viridian City. He had to admit though, he had had no idea who the Gym Leader was and was particularly curious about this since his Trainer Card featured photo identity of all of the Gym Leaders in Kanto except for that of Viridian City, in his place there was simply a silhouette emblazoned with a question mark. It came as a complete shock to him that it was Giovanni, it just blew his mind.
The battle was nowhere near as difficult as Red had anticipated it to be. Giovanni had been far more ruthless in his previous two battles with Red. Usually he moved around a lot in battles, trying to fight dirty where possible, Red knew this from his other two battles with the man but this time was very different, maybe he was behaving himself more because this was a Gym battle. In this battle, Giovanni had stood completely still, standing up perfectly straight with his arms by his sides except when sending out a new Pokémon. Even when he did send out his Pokémon, he appeared to be in excruciating pain. Red knew Giovanni would never admit to it if he didn’t have to, but he was sure he even saw the man involuntarily shed a few tears at one point. The biggest change in Giovanni that Red noticed though was the fact that he looked scared, there was genuine fear in his eyes – the kind of look people had after they had narrowly avoided death. Red didn’t even think about how the battle had gone, it had been too easy to dwell on.
Red headed to the local Pokémon Center and had the nurse on duty heal his Pokémon; after all, Giovanni had done enough damage that he couldn’t very well just head straight to the Pokémon League. After his Pokémon were healed up and ready to go, Red headed west from Viridian City, down Route 22, where he had battled Blue for the second time ever. Red was filled with a rush of inspiration as he walked up this route, remembering how far he had come since he had last been here, then he saw someone at the other end of the route walking very slowly towards him. Brown hair. Black polo shirt. Blue jeans. Could it be?
It was Blue. Why was Blue walking away from the Pokémon League? Was he the Champion already and just coming home to bring the news?
“Blue!” shouted Red, unable to hold it in.
Red hoped he didn’t look stupid for saying that, he was just so shocked and unnerved. His stomach was in knots and he was just praying that Blue was not already the Champion, he was probably muttering out loud but he just couldn’t control himself.
“What?” exclaimed Blue, apparently equally as surprised to see Red as Red was to see him, “Red!”
Blue walked over to Red and stood toe to toe with him. Red put on a brave face, he wasn’t about to show himself up in front of his rival.

Congratulations on your one year anniversary! There really have been a lot of chapters.
I recentyl read through the majority of the series, and I am really amazed at how you have flipped the story around, making Red the less superior trainer. I think that was a nice move, and I have enjoyed seeing the story told from Blue's perspective. There have been some really great battles, especially the Giovanni battle. That was truly brilliant! And I quite liked this chapter reviewing Red's progress. And I am looking forward to see how the Elite Four turns out, and the next Blue vs Red battle.

Impressive story. I've been following it's twists and turns since the beginning, and I can picture the end already. If it truly follows the games, then
Does that sound right, or will there be more to the story?
Blue'll beat the Elite Four and become champion, then Red'll take his title. Three years later, he's the new Viridian Gym Leader. Gold, with 15 badges, will find him on Cinnabar and challenge him. The Epilogue will be just that: one last battle against Gold (he'll probably use his HGSS team), and he'll lose. The story ends when he gives Gold the Earth Badge.
Does that sound right, or will there be more to the story?

Dude, I'm happy for you. That is a LOT of achievements. Your fic is awesome, and now more people are seeing its awesomeness. Nice one, man!
Maybe I should start making May's story for a compliment.
On a side note, my birthday is June 11 too, so...I have the same birthday as this fic? Lolz.

As a basic outline that sounds good but there'll be more to it than that. You'll have to wait and see.

Since it's Rival's Story's birthday and I was bored, I decided to make this as a present:

WOOOOW. That is amazing work! Thank you for the birthday present! Definitely better than Blazaking's in as much as I didn't have to ask for this one... I might switch this one up with the other one in my sig... Ahhh, this is really cool anyway. Is the Supernerd meant to be the Scientist? Adding the starters in is a really nice touch and I love the red and blue backgrounds! Thanks!
EDIT: The supernerd is Brains, isn't it? I get it now, cos Brains (not the Brains from Are We Heroes, of course) is on Red's team! Now it's awesomer than before!
Anyway, here's the next chapter. Sorry if it's not really up to my usual standard but I've had quite a busy week. Without further ado, here it is!
Chapter 73
“What a surprise to see you here!” gloated Blue, trying to play down the pain he was in.
“Is it really?” retorted Red, “I’ve not been that far behind you, Blue!”
Blue became very annoyed that he had allowed Red to catch up with him, he had been two Badges ahead.
“So you’re going to Pokémon League?” challenged Blue, just wishing for Red to say ‘no’.
“That’s right,” snapped Red curtly.
“You collected all the Badges too?” checked Blue, hoping that his rival had made some kind of mistake.
“Yes,” answered Red, “I have.”
“That’s cool!” announced Blue excitedly, overcompensating a little for the amount his heart sunk at Red’s answer.
“You’re not ready for the Pokémon League,” lectured Red, reminding Blue of the last time he had been on Route 22, “You need a lot more practice first.”
“Then I’ll whip you, Red!” retaliated Blue, but then became all too aware that that might make him sound weak, “As a warm up for the Pokémon League!”
“A battle then?” asked Red with a smile, knowing the answer already.
“Come on!” shouted Blue in response.
Just seconds later, both Blue and Red threw down a Poké Ball, each one exploding to reveal their respective starter Pokémon.
Charizard and Venusaur began looking around as soon as they were out of their Poké Balls and, before too long, locked eyes with one another. Their rivalry was as strong as that of their trainers and both Pokémon started growling, eager to get going.
“Frenzy Plant!” commanded Red to Blue’s surprise.
Blue thought Red would switch out, so he hadn’t given an order, he had been planning to see Red’s first Pokémon before he did. He’d never heard of the move Frenzy Plant before, what was it?
Venusaur stuck its vines into the ground and sent a line of thorny vines along the ground towards Charizard. Blue felt a pang of guilt in his heart as Charizard looked to its trainer in confusion, desperate for some sort of instruction in how to avoid this attack but it never came. Charizard was hit dead on and knocked to the ground. Still, Charizard was resistant, so it wasn’t too much of a tragedy.
Blue was unsure what to do next, then it seemed that Venusaur was trying to recover from the attack. It seemed as if it worked like Hyper Beam, after executing such a powerful attack, it took Venusaur quite some time to recover the energy required to move.
“Flamethrower!” commanded Blue.
Charizard roared triumphantly after being given this order and quickly obeyed sending a jet of fire across the grass towards Venusaur. The Grass type simply couldn’t withstand its weakness and ended up being completely eliminated as a result.
“Unlucky Red,” teased Blue.
Red said nothing and sent out his next Pokémon. Blue had only seen pictures of this Pokémon before, but instantly recognised it as a Lapras. Where on earth did Red get these rare Pokémon from? Snorlax, Eevee, Lapras. Why wasn’t Blue encountering any Pokémon like this?
Blue thought about what had just happened – in spite of using a much more powerful move, Venusaur had been defeated by Charizard. It was all about type alignment, Charizard just couldn’t beat a Water type, it was as simple as that. Blue pulled out Charizard’s Poké Ball and withdrew his starter.
He had all his Pokémon remaining so he though he may as well go for one with a type advantage – Exeggcute was up. Exeggcute’s moves at the moment were Confusion, Leech Seed, Toxic and Sleep Powder. Not a great move set, but Blue was pretty sure it was going to learn its final move, Solar Beam pretty soon, which would make the move set a little better. In the mean time, Exeggcute didn’t actually have a move that Lapras was weak against. Still, Exeggcute was resistant to Water, so that was an advantage.
“Toxic!” ordered Blue, thinking of a tactic combining his moves quickly.
“Perish Song!” retorted Red.
Exeggcute successfully landed the Toxic attack as Lapras sang out a horrible tune. Perish Song meant that both Exeggcute and Lapras would faint within the time it took them to use three moves.
“Leech Seed!” commanded Blue, confident that he could come on top during that time.
“Sheer Cold!” ordered Red.
Blue was familiar with Sheer Cold, it worked in a similar way to Horn Drill, if it hit it would take out the target, but that wasn’t that likely. Lapras’ attack was, thankfully, inaccurate but Red was not so lucky and Lapras was seeded by Exeggcute’s Leech Seed. Blue supposed the reason for this was that Red had cottoned on to what his tactic. Blue’s tactic was based on the fact that he knew in great detail how the Leech Seed attack worked – it was the seed of a plant that worked in a very particular way.
The way in which the seed thrived was by absorbing blood from the host Pokémon’s blood stream and then sending it off in pollen-like mini seeds that return to the Pokémon which used the Leech Seed attack. The reason this so effective when used in conjunction with the Toxic technique was because the seed could also feed on the poison that Toxic spread throughout the body of the subject. To put it in layman’s terms, Toxic gave the target damage which increased with every turn and Leech Seed absorbed damage from the target which, thanks to Toxic, also increased with every turn. Red had had Lapras use Sheer Cold in an attempt to deny Exeggcute the chance to recover any health.
Blue then ordered Exeggcute to use Confusion, in an attempt to whittle down Lapras’ health as much as possible. Red smiled.
“What?” demanded Blue, completely infuriated.
“Bad move,” retorted Red, “So easily avoided...”
Blue tried to think about what he missed, but he was too late. Red withdrew Lapras and laughed as Exeggcute fainted, the echoes of Lapras’ earlier Perish Song ringing in Blue’s ears.
Each of the trainers had had one Pokémon defeated and had withdrawn another, but Blue still had the upper hand as Charizard was in much better shape than Lapras. Basically, Red was down two Pokémon while Blue was only down one. Red threw down another Poké Ball, this one exploding to reveal his Snorlax.
Normal type Pokémon’s only weakness was Fighting and Blue didn’t have any of those, or even any Pokémon with moves of that type so he faltered over which Pokémon he should choose next... Gyarados, Pidgeot, Charizard, Rhyhorn or Alakazam?
It didn’t matter. This time he was definitely going to win.

I was gonna answer after reading, but yes, it was the Trainers and their Helpers I intended. Also, if you'd notice Blue's feet, I positioned them like that to show he's a step ahead, while he also feels like he's behind Red...mostly cause I like overanalyzing things =P.
Anyway, good chapter, and Perish Song then switch ouyt, a tactic my friend has used many a time...until I knock out her damned Lapras before it can use the move =P Keep it up!

My theory: Red obtains Blastoise by trading Lapras to Maxwell for his Wartortle. Lapras would definitely be a better "sea traveling" pokemon for Maxwell, should he decide that pokemon training isn't for him and want to be a sailor again.

My theory: Red obtains Blastoise by trading Lapras to Maxwell for his Wartortle. Lapras would definitely be a better "sea traveling" pokemon for Maxwell, should he decide that pokemon training isn't for him and want to be a sailor again.
But,red on his final team has both lapras and blastoise.....:conangry:
