Hey, I'm still like less than halfway through reading this ... It sucks when you drop into a fic this good when it's nearing the end of it's run.

Awesome work.

Copied word for word from the 'Pedia:
"Synchronize passes on status problems to the opponent that caused the problem. Synchronize will not pass on the Sleep or Frozen status conditions"

Just so that this post is not entirely devoid of a point, I've always wanted to say that I love this fic. It's amazing, it was based on an entirely original concept at the time of creation (following the rival), and it completely deserved the awards that it got.
I'd like to say that I read all 70+ chapters in a night or something, but I lurk-read for a while, so it was only thirty or so. :D

Great job.

You'll have to wait and see, I'm afraid! I can tell you though that Maxwell doesn't have any Badges, so he's not going to get to Victory Road.

Thank you for the compliment and I'm actually impressed you're still reading! For some reason I assumed you'd read a few chapters and then give up... Don't be offended, it's just because I know that's what I would've done =P

Thank you very much! PM/VM a link to your fic and I'll give it a read and review if it's not too long.

Well that would be brilliant! There are currently three fics that I know of that'd fit the bill of a rivalfic - that's more than were nominated in some legitimate categories so you might just be right! Then again, Barry's Story probably isn't established enough to have been nominated - but that's still two, same as Shipping and Future =P

Thank you very, very much! And reading thirty chapters in one day is certainly nothing to be sniffed at, particularly since it's the later ones which are longer (I believe each one is at least 1000 words) Good job and thanks for putting the time and effort to do that into my fic!

Well thank you very much!

Anyway, the length that this message already might make you think I'm not posting a chapter now, but guess what - I am! In spite of my promise before I'm thinking it might be better to just make 4 days ago my day off and post the next chapter in another four days time. If you guys think I should post today like I said though I'll make an effort to write another chapter in the next 15 hours 20 minutes (which is when 4th July ends in my timezone)

Chapter 77

Blue had never felt worse in his life. He was still in incredible pain from his battle with Giovanni, he had lost against Red for the fifth time, his Pokémon were all fainted and he was heading in the opposite direction of the nearest Pokémon Center. Pride was costing him so much – why was it so important for him to beat Red?

All he really wanted was his grandfather’s approval, but he could never seem to get it – Red always seemed to beat him to the punch. Blue didn’t really care too much for his grandmother, who had played a small role in bringing him up, but he knew he could gain her approval simply by being the best battler ever. In fact, she might even be proud of him for getting as far as he already had and being as powerful as he already was. She’d definitely be proud of him if he managed to beat her. Not that he cared about what that old hag thought of him – it couldn’t be half as bad as what he thought of her.

Blue walked towards Victory Road, hoping for a miracle, he really needed someone to heal his Pokémon. He couldn’t face going back to Viridian City; he would bump into Red there without a doubt. He approached the first guard, just praying that she would be able to heal his Pokémon – or at least lend him a Pokémon. There was no way he could get through Victory Road without any Pokémon.

“Stop!” cried the guard as Blue approached her, “You need to show me your Boulder Badge to get past!”

Blue was too nervous to ask her to heal his Pokémon, so he just got out his Boulder Badge.

“Oh!” exclaimed the guard, “That is the Boulder Badge! You may go through!”

Blue nodded in gratitude, he prepared to enter the gate without asking her as he was too ashamed but then he decided he had to swallow his pride. It’s not like Red or his grandfather was there.

“I was wondering if you could help me with something?” enquired Blue.

The guard looked to him in a way that implied her answer was ‘yes’.

“Well,” continued Blue, “My Pokémon aren’t at full health and I don’t think I can get through Victory Road in this situation.”

Blue still found it too difficult to admit that his Pokémon were actually fully knocked out.

“If you do not feel you can make it through Victory Road with your Pokémon at their current strength,” advised the guard, “Then I suggest you visit the Pokémon Center in Viridian City.”

Blue nodded, this was not the answer he had been hoping for. Returning was not an option. The guard did not even question it as Blue walked straight past her and headed through the gate anyway. Blue was then asked for his Cascade Badge by the next guard, then his Thunder Badge, then his Rainbow Badge. He couldn’t help but think that it would have been a lot more efficient for a single guard to ask him for all eight of his Badges at once. He made a mental note to mention this to his grandfather, as Oak was one of the senior officials of the Pokémon League.

After passing the fourth guard, Blue reached a body of water. He was beginning to realise that he was chasing a fool’s dream, there was no way he was going to make it through Victory Road without any conscious Pokémon. Gyarados could technically Surf while unable to battle because it took so naturally to water, but it was dangerous – Blue could fall off at any moment. It was time to swallow his pride, at least if he turned back now he still stood a chance of beating Red to the Pokémon League, if he pressed on, there was no way he’d be able to get through Victory Road – he might even be killed in there.

Blue made an about turn to head back to Viridian City to heal his Pokémon when he saw a familiar face from his childhood - a large, muscular man carrying a box, who went by the name of Bruno. Bruno had been one of Oak’s pet trainers when Blue was still very young, so he had regularly visited Pallet Town at around that time. Since Bruno became a member of the Elite Four, on Oak’s recommendation, Blue hardly ever saw him and it was always a pleasure to him.

“Blue!” exclaimed Bruno, also seeing him.

“Bruno,” said Blue with a smile he was unable to hold in.

“So I see you have four Badges,” remarked Bruno, “Very impressive.”

“I have eight actually,” corrected Blue.

“So you’re here for a challenge. That’s great news,” replied Bruno, “I don’t know whether your grandmother will be proud or ashamed.”

“Why would she be ashamed?” challenged Blue in disbelief.

“You know how she is,” explained Bruno, “She’s very proud. Your being here means she was wrong and Oak was right.”

Bruno was right, she would probably hate the fact that Blue had made it all the way here.

“Anyway,” continued Bruno, sensing that this topic made Blue uncomfortable, “Can I hitch a ride with you? I don’t have any Water types with me and I don’t think Lorelei has even left the Indigo Plateau yet so I could be here a while.”

Blue thought he may as well take his chances explaining his situation to Bruno, at least that way he could head back to Viridian accompanied by Bruno. If Red saw him with an Elite Four member, at least he’d be able to keep some of his pride.

“Well,” answered Blue, “I do but it’s knocked out at the moment and I don’t want to risk riding it. None of my Pokémon are on particularly high health right now actually, I’m thinking of heading back – do you wanna come with me?”

“You’re very lucky,” replied Bruno lifting the box he was carrying so that it was more in Blue’s sight, “The reason I was in Viridian City was to meet a Silph official to pick up this.”

“What’s in the box?” enquired Blue.

Bruno smiled and began opening the box.

“It’s new technology recently developed by Silph,” explained Bruno, still removing the packaging, “The League just bought them and I drew the short straw and had to go pick them up – they’re called Relievers.”

Blue really was lucky.

“I know what a Reliever is,” answered Blue.

“You do?” asked Bruno, clearly taken aback, “These are brand new though. Word gets around fast these days, I guess.”

Blue didn’t even bother telling Bruno about his previous encounter with the Reliever. Bruno took one of the Relievers in the box out and pointed it as the Poké Balls around Blue’s waist. Blue felt the same movement he had felt when the Team Rocket Scientist had done the same thing and sighed a breath of relief.

“Thank you, Bruno,” said Blue with deep gratitude.

“Quid pro quo,” replied Bruno jovially, “I want my ride.”

Blue smiled and sent Gyarados into the nearby body of water, who, to Blue’s delight, roared with energy upon being released. Both of the trainers climbed on top of Gyarados and Blue sailed it towards Victory Road.

It was short but sweet. I liked the writing about the tension between Blue and Agatha, so I can't wait for that battle :)

Great chapter! And in response to the author, I was hoping that Maxwell would be the Champion. :p Fool's dream, I know.

Well thank you very much! Very happy with both of them and thanks for your support! That goes to everyone who voted for or nominated anything in this fic in fact!

Ah, yes, I'm afraid Maxwell's characterisation as a poor trainer has not been a misleading one, I haven't decided whether or not he's tried to get a Badge but he has certainly never succeeded. As for the Champion...

There isn't one, I think Blue was the first ever Kanto League Champion

Anyhoo, here's the new chapter! Sorry about the wait!

Chapter 78

Bruno actually left Blue at Victory Road and instructed him to wait for ten minutes before heading it as it was unfair to head in with the company of a member of the Elite Four. Blue barely waited five, he couldn’t afford to lose time right now, Red was hot on his heels.

He needn’t have worried so much though, he knew he got through Victory Road far faster than his rival could’ve hoped to. Blue got through Victory Cave by climbing and jumping mostly – quite dangerous stuff. Stuff that he knew Red would die if he tried to imitate, as he was about as physically fit as a piñata. Sadly, he was also about as popular as one.

Anyway, it didn’t take long for Blue to progress through Victory Road; he was at the Indigo Plateau in no time. Blue had racked up a lot of money from winning all of his Pokémon battles and he stopped at the Mart desk as he was considering finally splashing out on some Full Restores and Revives. Then Blue had a quick look in his bag to see how much room he had in it and spied the Potions he had bought in Viridian City when he was starting out as a Trainer. Blue had come this far and hadn’t touched them even once – why ruin that bragging right now?

Blue went to the Pokémon Center desk and healed up his Pokémon, ready to take on the Pokémon League. The challenge was to take down all four members of the Elite Four without stopping in between; he was very familiar with it. Blue was not particularly confident in his ability to take this challenge – every Gym battle he had had so far had been a close thing, he certainly couldn’t have taken on two Gyms in a row without healing up. He thought back to his Gym battles and noted that at the strength he was now he probably could have taken out a few of the Gym Leaders in a row. It was pretty shocking that Brock was a Gym Leader, in fact, Maxwell could’ve beaten him and Maxwell was not a good trainer.

Blue strode on into the chamber of the Elite Four and hoped for the best. It was a cold room filled with ice and a calm looking woman with red hair, glasses and a pencil skirt, who looked like she belonged in an office, standing at the other side – she was one of the two current members of the Elite Four who Blue had never met before. Blue approached slowly with his hand on Exeggcute’s Poké Ball – it was clear she was a Water type specialist after all.

The last official League battle Blue had participated in had required him to be ready at any moment and whenever he didn’t his life was put at risk, in fact, the only way he’d been able to win was by ignoring his opponent’s Pokémon and attacking Giovanni directly.

“Please don’t try and pull a Giovanni,” shouted the woman to Blue, “He came in here with his dirty tactics a few years ago and he didn’t last five minutes against me.”

Blue didn’t know what to say to this. On the one hand it was a relief that this woman wasn’t going to try and attack him directly since he didn’t think he could survive another onslaught so soon after his battle with Giovanni, but on the other hand, the thought that this woman mopped the floor with such a powerful man so easily was terrifying. How could she be so strong?

“The name’s Lorelei!” announced the woman boldly, “I’m sorry to crush your hopes so early on but I can assure you that there is nothing you can do that will possibly beat me. Your League challenge ends here!”

Blue nervously grabbed Exeggcute’s Poké Ball from his belt and threw it out towards Lorelei, who threw out a Poké Ball of her own, releasing a Dewgong.

“An interesting choice against an Ice specialist,” remarked Lorelei.

Blue cursed himself for assuming she was a Water specialist, but stuck with his choice.

“Giga Drain!” commanded Blue.

“Ice Beam,” retorted Lorelei calmly.

Dewgong moved far quicker than Exeggcute could’ve hoped to and the Ice Beam landed, dealing Exeggcute an incredible amount of damage. In fact, Blue was sure Exeggcute would not be able to withstand another Ice Beam, he just hoped Giga Drain would restore enough health for it to survive the hit. But Exeggcute didn’t use Giga Drain, instead it gave Blue a look he recognised. It was the look his Alakazam had given him when it had used Psychic for the first time – Exeggcute had learnt a new move and wanted to use it. Blue decided to take his chances with the new move and nodded, giving Exeggcute permission to use it.

Suddenly, Exeggcute started glowing and sucked in all the light flowing into the room as if it were charging an attack. Solar Beam. It was time. Blue ruffled through his bag, looking for the Leaf Stone that Maxwell had given to him when he had been about to battle Erika. After a few seconds, Blue found it and tossed it to the Egg Pokémon, causing it to shine with the evolutionary light that Blue had become so familiar with.

Lorelei was so stunned by this series of events that she did not give her Dewgong any orders and it sat their stupidly as Exeggcute grew to several times its former size, developed feet and finally, stood proud as an Exeggutor.

“Ice Beam!” commanded Lorelei again desperately, clearly beginning to lose her cool.

Unfortunately for Lorelei, she ordered her attack too late and Exeggutor’s Solar Beam hit Dewgong, managing to knock it out in a single move. It was probably more powerful than usual because Exeggcute evolved while charging it. Blue was still less somewhat disappointed by the battling power so far of a woman who claimed to have beaten Giovanni with ease.

“You just got a taste of my power!” hissed Lorelei, selecting the next Poké Ball from her belt.

“Yeah,” retorted Blue, “Well it tasted crap.”
