Oh my! How times have changed :-D I remember when I used to stalk Sppf (think early DP) and every episode caps would be posted of any TR scene, with an accompanying "That's almost slightly cute, isn't it?! PLEASE GOD!!!" that's how desparate we were :p

Oh man, I remember that. Those were bad times.

Here's a not particularly popular fearhug! Thank you Iwane ;-) I love Nyasu's role, haha!

IIRC, that was the first time I learned about Takegami.

Ah... memories...

Yep! I do get away with pretty much everything, he he he.

Loving all these screenshot, guys! ^^ I used to think I had a rather large collection of TR pics, but ever since I came here I realize that it wasn't all that big at all. I've lost count of how many I have now, but it must be at least double the amount of my original collection. Thank you all soooooooo much!! ^___^

I hope we get something special for Christmas too!

So... Loving the activity today, all the beautiful pictures and new avatars as well!
Now, I should move to the high spot.

*clears the throat*
Ladies and gentlemen, Takeshi Shudo's articles! http://www.style.fm/as/05_column/05_shudo_bn.shtml

He wrote at least 4 articles where Team Rocket takes the main part... here's the first of them. I cut several sentences from it, but it wasn't anything important for us. There's nothing about Rocketshipping here, but it definitely give us answers about a lot of questions and will help us as the future reference for discussing on Team Rocket and Rocketshipping.

Spoilered for "it will blow your mind" and for "oh sh*t, it's long". Please, don't mind my broken English D:
“At the celebration party…” 04-23-2008

The party thrown to celebrate the start of Pokemon broadcasting was impressive thanks to voice actors being in charge of voices of Musashi, Kojiro and Nyasu from Team Rocket, who were in high spirits.

Team Rocket appears also in the games, but they’re just simple villains, known only by the name of Team Rocket. Team Rocket from the games, are depicted in a way that every time they make an appearance, you can’t even know if it’s still the same person. Of course, also in games there is no 2-person male-female team with a pokemon called Nyasu created. However, Musashi, Kojiro and Nyasu that appear in the anime on a regular basis, are original character of anime edition. Every of them has a unique personality.

The group of the protagonists - Satoshi, Kasumi, Takeshi and Pikachu, as might be expected, are the main ones that appear on a screen. I was thinking about various personalities for them, but after all, they had to get so called stereotypical personalities, easy to understand, to obtain the empathy of children, who are the main audience of anime version. There was also a way to give them unique personalities to make the production characteristic, but considering that the main audience will be children, it was better to make the protagonists plain and simple characters. Regarding to minor audience, it doesn’t matter, when villains and rivals are displayed in a simple and easy to understand way as well. But, to that extent, it becomes a production intended completely for kids. In this situation, it won’t become interesting anime, no matter who watches it. Even though I tried to create anime for children, I wanted something that would make it admirable for youths and adults. Just like giving satisfaction to adults with a great picture book or a fairy-tale, I thought it must be the same when it comes to kids-oriented comics and anime. Actually, I’ve never written a screenplay that would be restricted to anime for children myself.

First of all, I felt that, if the contents that the script contained weren’t amusing, enjoyable and also if they didn’t cause me difficulties with some solutions to make me ponder holding my head in my hands I don’t think I’d want to write it. And, because I’ve already hit the old age then, I didn’t want to write a screenplay for anime that would felt like I’m wasting my time.
Consequently, even if the series looks like “the story about manga world” or “the first manga tale” addressed to children, I intended to write a thing that would stimulate intellectual interest in adults and wouldn’t make fools of them. Therefore, when I was deciding on anime screenplay for Pokemon, the thing I wondered about first, was “what about extending the age limit from little children to adults, so that the people could enjoy it also at older age?”
There was also a way to describe mental development of the protagonists during their meetings with various pokemon, but since the televising was arranged to last for 1 year and a half, with audience being little kids, it no longer could be about protagonists growth.

I’ll repeat myself but, the thing is that Pokemon was arranged for at least 1, 5 years running period. It may be digression, but I think it’s amazing that Pokemon is being continued for more than 10 years already.
The elements that I’ve been trying to put in Pokemon anime version, the ones that were made for amusing adults and make them think, have been gradually fading, the audience that were children at the beginning, steadily became adults and for sure lost interest in Pokemon.
As a substitution, in spite of the amount of children whose Pokemon amuses, certainly getting smaller due to decrease in birth rates, there’s no indication that Pokemon’s popularity, whether it’s games, TV anime or the movies, becomes weak.

Perhaps, even with exception of production’s quality, there are various business means, but what’s supporting Pokemon today, are following things: any anime didn’t take place of Pokemon, game makers thinking what to do so that nobody would get tired of Pokemon games and anime makers working together to make the product that draws attention of the audience for whom watching anime became a habit like with “Sazae-san”, “Anpanman” or “Doreamon”. I think it’s splendid, that they succeeded at doing it. At first, Pokemon’s rehash-like productions also appeared – nevertheless, they’re not inferior as productions, but now, I guess that productions imitating Pokemon no longer appear. Presently, rehashed anime that once were made on the model of other anime, are in full bloom. But, Pokemon even broke through creating of rehashes matter. When Pokemon and Pokemon-like productions keep on running to the top, no substitutes are needed. Probably, whether it’s games or anime, even if people who created it would pass away, it appears to me that Pokemon would be continued.
People involved in Pokemon project, as long as I didn’t get in the mood to retire myself, felt like they found employment for eternity. Nevertheless, even if income is granted, I think it’s good to stand out in this business.

During my life, I wanted to try doing various things and I ended up being self-employed – I’ve been writing previously too, but I didn’t become a scriptwriter at all. Nevertheless, there wasn’t also any other job I wanted to do particularly. Anyway, because I thought it was better to be able to do various things, at the time when I graduated from high school I encountered with a thing called screenplay, and when I wrote it without any intention, it’s got appreciated and adapted for the screen so I became able to do it for living and now I got old…
Such a thing like being employed for one thing for eternity, would make me feel overwhelmed – if I’m thinking about it sensibly, it may be that I'm strange having such sensation, but I couldn't live being connected to one production for a whole lifetime, getting old enough to be regarded by everyone as a middle-aged man, convicting myself I'm young only in spirit, so in the end I respect my own decision.
I’m grateful to people, who gave me the opportunity to be involved in such rare production.
[…]
But getting back on topic, with a broadcast arranged for 1 year and a half, to carry through the series in a exciting manner, there was also an idea to make the main character encounter with new formidable enemies in succession, while he’s on the way to reach his goal. Using the idea that was also in the games, it was created in a manner of making appearing rivals steadily stronger. But, in this manner, it caught my attention that with the protagonist that needs to be even stronger to confront with strong rivals being the case, the subject matter will have tendency to make the power as a value. Certainly, this is a story where the protagonist is getting stronger every time he competes with appearing rivals, but even if it may be that it’s popular and exciting, according to children, the production that seems to carry value of power is detestable, and, concerning the adults, they also don’t think that it would exert very great effect.
With people being under strange delusion and greedy for political power and money, I had a hunch, that it would make it similar with strange values in regard to human life.
In regard to human life, in present period there is a speaking style in which words calmly say that, on the rule of authority power, social status and academic background, with the power of money, you’re assigned to the winning group or losing group, although assuming it’s a popular phrase, it’s strange times. I didn’t want to use exaggerated speaking style, if it’s not only non-educational but immoral, so I no longer wanted to make an anime where the atmosphere hanging in the air would make it look like the value of human life is to become a winner.
When it comes to Pokemon episodes, besides the original goal of the main character, that is, to battle with Pokemon and to be the best at training them to become Pokemon Master, it became necessary to put in other values. That was the duty of the series constructor and scriptwriters.
And, once more, Team Rocket’s existence was naturally essential. In case of Pokemon edition, because villain characters were going to be original here, it was possible to create them in any way. Moreover, with fascinating villains or protagonist’s rival being the case, the interest of the whole production becomes to change. In interesting productions, the existence of fascinating villains and rivals is essential.
In other words, whether the production becomes interesting or boring, it depends not as much on the main character’s charm, as on how much villains and rivals are fascinating.

It’s often said that Team Rocket was created with being conscious of the evil trio from “Time Bokan”. At first, when planning started, it may be that the producers submitted an example of Time Bokan’s evil trio for making their explanations easy to understand, but since I’ve become the series constructor, the nuance of Team Rocket was a little different. The evil trio from “Time Bokan, the clumsy villains whose evil boss continues to set punishment on them for their failures, are so-called losing buffoons, but Team Rocket, even if they continue to lose because of their clumsiness and stupidity in the same way, have a self-confidence and they never regard themselves as losers. They have their own policy, and even if it differs from general common sense, it asserts their sense of existence to the end. Inside Pokemon anime, where villains are essential, they make an appearance being aware of the fact that Pokemon anime wouldn’t come to existence if they weren’t there. It’s because they aren’t usual villains whose appearance is limited to only 2-3 times. While the protagonists are stereotypes easy to understand, Team Rocket in the role of villains must be full of individualities and having sense of existence characters. Their existence must be made the way, that would make the audience to call out “I’ve been waiting for it!” when they appear on the screen. The more Team Rocket will be individual, the more they will stand out, the more Pokemon anime edition will differ from usual anime and become a unique thing.
In short, it’s me who thought of making up a primary factor for Pokemon with existence of clumsy villains, “Team Rocket”, appreciated by adults, transforming children-oriented anime into family anime that adults can enjoy too.

“It’s us, who will decide, whether Pokemon anime will succeed or end up as a failure” it seems that three people performing voices for Team Rocket were pretty much aware of that at the time of celebration party. They looked as if they were thinking that this job is worth doing, as voice actors and as performers. The voices of Rocket Gang, Megumi Hayashibara’s trio, came to me specially all together and told me such a thing in front of me.
“If you ask about us this and that, the answer we will give will be society’s compassion, to prevent the world’s destruction, to protect the world’s peace, to carry through the evils of love and truth, in the roles of lovely, charming villains, Musashi! Kojiro! Team Rocket’s duo soars through the galaxy, the white hole, the white tomorrow is waiting for us! Something like that!”
That was the motto Rocket Gang say when they appear in front of Satoshi’s group. “Let us say this motto every time we appear and make it popular” I was told. In short, I necessarily included this motto in the script, whenever Team Rocket appears… Because of this being the request from voice actors’ side, I was very happy myself, since I created it thinking about it considerably. Furthermore, people from animation also were devoted to this motto, and every time, they came up with different poses.
Nobody, the supervisor included, complained about Team Rocket’s voices, entrusted basically to 3 people. I wrote about it earlier, but I told the producer “Mr Hayashige, in accordance to the scenario, they don’t have a lot lines to speak, do they?”, but instead of being dissatisfied about it, he looked rather pleased.

With a help of willingness of Team Rocket’s voice actors, Team Rocket appeared to be more popular than I’d expected. The most popular among children was Pikachu, but when the viewers are getting older, it looked like their interest moved for sake of Team Rocket.
As for the episodes where Team Rocket doesn’t have much to do, it occurred that we’ve been hearing audience’s opinions saying “Give us more Team Rocket!”. Personally, I don’t like very much, that the series follow a pattern , where Team Rocket, like the arrangement states, after battling with main characters and losing with them, disappears shouting “I have a bad feeling” at the end of every episode, but concerning other scriptwriters, to them it looked easier to write scripts in this way, so before one can say, it became standard of Pokemon TV version’s story.
I don’t know whether to say it’s a luck or not, nor whether the reason was that Team Rocket were villains, but it seemed that always complaining producer whose voice was the most influential, nicknamed Omae-sama didn’t regard them as important. He gave various orders in regard to leading characters, but in regard to Team Rocket, his opinion almost never reached my ears.
[…]
As a matter of fact, the final decisions on various things about Pokemon anime version, were being made by Omae-sama during conference. Apparently, it had a form of conference, but as a result of Omae-sama’s strong influence, it was his view that passed. It was natural, that his views differed to mine on some occasions, but the thing that differed the most, was point of view in regard to Pokemon anime. Being the free employee for series construction, I respected the supervisor’s instructions as much as possible. Even if just like him, I wanted to make “Pokemon” a good quality production, but with Omae-sama being the manager of anime products and me being the employee of a large publishing company, it may be that his point of view exceeded my imagination, but as an employee I think that it was necessary to make own business bigger. Not to mention, that he had a hard time getting the right to animate “Pokemon”. He wrote some more details about these hardships in his book about Pokemon. Considering it’s his duty to his company, he not only wants to make it a hit, but a big hit. Also, he achieved a great success at editing comic magazines for kids, so if made it a hit, he’s in possession of firm methodology.

I don’t have any excuses, I surely wished for a success, but I preferred if the production was something I’d think that it’s interesting and would have a great quality as a family anime, to it being a great success. If it had a consequence in becoming a great hit, I would just have “That’s great” type of sensation. I didn’t have a feeling to aim at the great success excitedly.
However, I think that for a supervisor, making “Pokemon” a great hit was like a mission.
That disagreement was something that was giving me headaches.
I guess that I didn’t start a fight with the supervisor, because I followed his instructions with respect. But how should I have solved a disagreement with Omae-sama?
It’s true that instead of meeting with Omae-sama it was better to follow the instructions of the supervisor, but more than being the series constructor, I had to be present at conferences as the person responsible for the screenplay. Naturally, Omae-sama’s complaints in relation to the screenplay, attacked my point of view directly.

Well I just gained a lot of respect for Takeshi Shudo. A lot of this was stuff we already knew, but it's interesting just how much he loved the Rockets and how much he seems to hate the twerps. lol.

I really don't find this depressing though. I mean, what he wanted is practically coming true now!

You really need to share these interviews with the rest of the fandom.

I wrote a long post but it got deleted, stupid internet connection >.> Fine.

Anyway, you're right about saying it's not depressing, considering what we have today. But still, I just couldn't help but be a little sad somehow, because I always wished for Team Rocket being the main characters of the show but I've never thought it was possible. Now, I know it was...

Also, it was sad that, after Takeshi Shudo left the staff, Team Rocket practically became neglected up to 2009. So yeah, I can call this year, the year of miracles, with me almost believing in earlier years, that Team Rocket will stay neglected like this to the very end.

I have some more conclusions about it, but I will write about it tomorrow @[email protected]

Share it with the rest of fandom? Well, I guess it would be a great idea, since it would teach some people to have more respect for poor Team Rocket ("See? This is why they never left nor will leave the show!"). But with such crappy translation? I'm too ashamed :p

Something I forgot to mention in my last post, I really hate that Omae person. He must have loved AG. -_- I would assume he's not working for the show anymore either. If he was, DP would be completely different.

This whole thing makes me wonder even more if Shudo is friends with Tomioka. Judging by Tomioka's work the two seems to have similar ideas on where the show should go. I'm sure Shudo is please with what happened this year.

Even if it's not perfect, it's something the rest of the fandom would be interested in!

*loving the pretty screenshots and new avatars*

Shinichiro's "Megu-chan" (I swear, I typed 'Mega-chan' about three times before finally getting it right) is so very squee-worthy. I completely agree with the idea of this being carried over into the anime somehow. For some reason, though, I can only picture Kojiro referring to Musashi as "Musa-chan" only if his words are dripping with sarcasm (eg. if they were having a blue and Kojiro was feeling uncharacteristically sardonic). However, I can't remember Kojiro ever being particularly sarcastic towards anyone (except maybe the Jari-tachi, but they don't really count), so: *hopes for a cute (and friendly!) scenario for this to be incorporated into*

And, oh ... whoa. WOW! Jesska, that is amazing :DDD Thanks so much for the articles and the translation. We're so lucky to have you! The idea that the Rocket trio were created with extending the viewership to adults in mind is really interesting, and is making more sense the more I think about it. Plus, I really like that Megumi, Shinichiro and Inuko came up with the motto within only a short space of time; it was almost impromptu, I guess :D

And broken English? What broken English?! You definitely have way better written English than a lot of my English-native-speaking friends :D So you should never have to feel ashamed. I agree completely with Musashi: there are a lot of people out there who would love to see this, too.

I can't wait for the next parts!

Seconded. It was this same impression of Rocket Dan being neglected that almost turned me off the Pokemon anime for good, but ...

I'd certainly be happy with Tomioka's progress, too, if I were in Shudo's shoes. The future's looking pretty good for us, and Rocket Dan fans in general, taking Shudo's article, and that some of the writers are thinking along the same wavelength, into mind.

I get the feeling I'm not wanted here seeing as no-one even noticed the 3 pics I posted back on page 697 :(
Aww, you're not unwanted :) I'm sorry that I missed them the first time around. Was it this post?:

Let's see what you make of these :)

Oooh, I see, I see. I don't think they're displaying for anyone, because your pictures are too small: one by one pixels. You might need to save them to your 'puter, then upload them to Photobucket or a similar photo hosting website, but totally repost them when you do. I'd like to see them :)

Jeska, you're absolutely amazing. Thank you so much! :-3 That must have been a lot of work.
I never had an idea the seiyuus themselves created the motto. That is so cute. <3 I wonder if they rewrote the AG and Sinnoh mottos too?
