Rumours/Fakes/Leaks Discussion Thread (V2)

I still think gyms and trials could work. Trials to get Z crystals, since that is Alolan specific and then the gyms to actually take on the League. That just makes sense. Especially if it is taking place a year later so the League and gyms have been established...

i mean i think there's a few reasons why it definitely couldn't work though: narratively, it makes no sense. Trials were clearly intended to be in the same vein as gyms, hence why they were absent. the plot point of establishing a Pokemon League is clearly meant to avoid having the player re-battle Hapu and Nanu in the original final trial format so soon after they'd just battled them initially (note, those two are the only two Kahunas absent from the Elite 4). furthermore, SM already shows that Z Crystals don't have to come from trials: you can find them in the world or people can just outright give them to you. and that kinda ties into my last bit on design. just like i said during the pre-release period for SM, there's only so many main game boss fights you can accommodate. 8 gyms and 7 trials leaves us just three short of the 18 total types. for the same reason i said for SM, there's only so much EXP the game can give out without resorting to wonky EXP curves (re: something like Johto).

the pretty much only way for it to work is if one is the main campaign and the other is post-game.

I think what he meant is that both trials and gyms could work with one being a league requirement main game and the other post game z crystal hunt? Or maybe not but i still think both trial and gyms would be fun to play in a same game

I could see them forego the regular trial and keep the grand trials. You'd basically swap out the trials for gyms. Once you collect each badge on a single island you have to face the Kahuna in order to get off again. Sure the grand trials weren't really like the regular trials, but they could makes them. That or just put a heavier emphases on the grand trials being important so they're not just another battle you have to do after all the gyms.

What so bad about having both the gyms and trials in USUM? I don't get it specially it was said by Kukui that he wants to pattern the Alolan League to Kanto

I for one specifically wants gyms in Alola maybe in Post game or maybe the trial would be the one on post game it gives more thing to do post game. And I know this is not the place but for me Trials is just a downgrade version of gym challenge sure you totem pokemon is different and is it more challenging but besides that the whole trial thing is just meh to me

Having gyms in Alola also tie up the whole Alolan league building story for me.

I wouldn't care if gyms were post game only, but I want the Island Trials to remain the main focus for the story. I just wouldn't like if gyms came back into the main story so soon; that would be only one game without them. Trails are supposed to be what sets Alola part from all other regions so far and bringing gyms would totally ruin that, imo.

The trials were kind of underwhelming, I hope that whatever comes into the games - they are slightly more challenging.

Honestly speaking i would rather have gyms than trials because for me it is more challenging. And if you put gyms post game it would still be gyms so ur point of trials making alola unique would be invalid. And also I dont think trials is the only thing making Alola unique. Alola has many qualities setting it apart from other regions:

*First region that is almost an archipelago(having many main islands)
*First region with a regional variant
*First region to let you hold the championship

And bringing trials just for the sake of uniqueness even if they are underwhelming is kinda bad in my opinion.

This is from last month, but take a look at this Z-Mega Theory:

That would be ideal

I would like if gyms were back. The PC would beat the gyms, but not be allowed to advance and/or leave the island until the Grand Trial is completed. I would it to go like this: beat gyms, complete the Captain's trials in any order, defeat the Captain in a battle, and move on to any other Captains on that island. Once all the Captains are defeated, then the Kahuna of the island can be challenged.

Might be overkill regarding the amount of boss battles:

  • 8 Gyms
  • 7 Trials
  • 4 Grand Trials
  • Repeated fights with Hau, Guzma, Plumera, Gladion, Faba(?) and Lusamine (seriously Team Skull alone would count for 9 boss fights)
  • The Elite 4
  • and Kukui.

Not overkill, a challenge worthy of my years of training. Seriously, while the trials were a bit more challenging than the gym circuit in XY, I want a gym learning curve of GSC or the RBY Elite 4. Granted, I was 20 years younger but I had to work and grind and the payoff was great. I understand Pokemon, at its heart, is aimed at younger players but some kind of challenge would be nice.

I'm torn on whether I want Gyms to come back. On one hand, I like collecting replicas of the different badges IRL, so some new ones would be nice. On the other hand, I liked having something different, and the trials are supposed to be a major part of Alola.

Hey, maybe they can have the Gyms be "under construction" until you beat Lusamine in Ultra Space, and you can't do the Elite Four until you defeat the Gyms; I can easily see Molayne becoming a Gym Leader, and maybe even Ryuki. Hell, I could even see Plumeria proving she turned her life around and becoming a Poison-type Gym Leader. We could also meet other "graduated" Trial Captains (like Molayne) that we haven't met in SuMo, and we'd hopefully get an Ice-type specialist. Maybe they could make it so a Trial Captain can "graduate" to the position of Gym Leader when they get too old for the job.

As much as I'd like to see Nanu become the first Dark-type Gym Leader, I think he'd reject it like he did the opportunity to be part of the E4. I'd also love to see Guzma become a Bug-type Gym Leader to show he's really turned his life around, but I think he'd need to do a bit more training with Hala before he's ready for a responsiblity like that.

it really wouldn't be a challenge. it'd just be either stupidly inflated levels or a gross leveling curve that would out-do GSC or at least give it a run for its money.

that just sounds tedious. i've already explored Alola and now i have to Fly all around it again? blah.
