i mean i think there's a few reasons why it definitely couldn't work though: narratively, it makes no sense. Trials were clearly intended to be in the same vein as gyms, hence why they were absent. the plot point of establishing a Pokemon League is clearly meant to avoid having the player re-battle Hapu and Nanu in the original final trial format so soon after they'd just battled them initially (note, those two are the only two Kahunas absent from the Elite 4). furthermore, SM already shows that Z Crystals don't have to come from trials: you can find them in the world or people can just outright give them to you. and that kinda ties into my last bit on design. just like i said during the pre-release period for SM, there's only so many main game boss fights you can accommodate. 8 gyms and 7 trials leaves us just three short of the 18 total types. for the same reason i said for SM, there's only so much EXP the game can give out without resorting to wonky EXP curves (re: something like Johto).I still think gyms and trials could work. Trials to get Z crystals, since that is Alolan specific and then the gyms to actually take on the League. That just makes sense. Especially if it is taking place a year later so the League and gyms have been established...

the pretty much only way for it to work is if one is the main campaign and the other is post-game.
What so bad about having both the gyms and trials in USUM? I don't get it specially it was said by Kukui that he wants to pattern the Alolan League to Kanto
I for one specifically wants gyms in Alola maybe in Post game or maybe the trial would be the one on post game it gives more thing to do post game. And I know this is not the place but for me Trials is just a downgrade version of gym challenge sure you totem pokemon is different and is it more challenging but besides that the whole trial thing is just meh to me
Having gyms in Alola also tie up the whole Alolan league building story for me.
I wouldn't care if gyms were post game only, but I want the Island Trials to remain the main focus for the story. I just wouldn't like if gyms came back into the main story so soon; that would be only one game without them. Trails are supposed to be what sets Alola part from all other regions so far and bringing gyms would totally ruin that, imo.

First region that is almost an archipelago(having many main islands)
I didn't get this till today, I didn't even know about it, but it's still leak thread, doesn't mean it'll happen
I could see them forego the regular trial and keep the grand trials. You'd basically swap out the trials for gyms. Once you collect each badge on a single island you have to face the Kahuna in order to get off again. Sure the grand trials weren't really like the regular trials, but they could makes them. That or just put a heavier emphases on the grand trials being important so they're not just another battle you have to do after all the gyms.
I would like if gyms were back. The PC would beat the gyms, but not be allowed to advance and/or leave the island until the Grand Trial is completed. I would it to go like this: beat gyms, complete the Captain's trials in any order, defeat the Captain in a battle, and move on to any other Captains on that island. Once all the Captains are defeated, then the Kahuna of the island can be challenged.
Might be overkill regarding the amount of boss battles:
- 8 Gyms
- 7 Trials
- 4 Grand Trials
- Repeated fights with Hau, Guzma, Plumera, Gladion, Faba(?) and Lusamine (seriously Team Skull alone would count for 9 boss fights)
- The Elite 4
- and Kukui.
it really wouldn't be a challenge. it'd just be either stupidly inflated levels or a gross leveling curve that would out-do GSC or at least give it a run for its money.a challenge worthy of my years of training.
that just sounds tedious. i've already explored Alola and now i have to Fly all around it again? blah.Hey, maybe they can have the Gyms be "under construction" until you beat Lusamine in Ultra Space, and you can't do the Elite Four until you defeat the Gyms;
