Via Shell Spider and from the latest Nintendo Dream comes Ohmura talking about the Elite Four.

The Elite Four

Designed by Mr. Ohmura [Bianca, Cheren, Gym Leaders, Oshawott’s line]
This time, the planner [Note: Not the designer] for the Gym Leader and the one for the Elite Four, Adler, Cheren and Biance was different.
The person who did the Gym Leaders was much more detailed in creating their backgrounds, and the person who did the Elite Four only gave broad orders.
Origianlly, they wanted to make Shauntel and Grimsley the ‘black’ and Caitlin and Marshall the ‘white’ ones, but it did not go as well as hoped [Translator’s Note: Notice that this would divide the Four between Ghost and Dark and Psychic and Fighting. Also, they’re not talking about skin colour].
A remnant of that for Ohmura is that he still sees Grimsley and Shauntel as Dracula and a werewolf.

Grimsley
Imagined him to be the son of a distinguished family who’s since been ruined (I.E. become poor/fallen from grace).
As a result, he is throwing himself into gambling.
His garments are designed to show off his good pedigree.
Also, red and blue are the colours of roulette.
(Ohmura makes a comment that makes us think he know that Grimsley is not wearing socks, so is there a reason for it maybe?)

Shauntel
Ohmura’s favourite character.
A woman hoping to become a novelist.
If you ignore the ribbon, gave her a really simple design.
Because she is a Ghost-type trainer, she was designed to look a little like a black cat.
Because of that, her ribbon faster stands out like a cat’s nose and makes her look somewhat like a cat.

Marshall
The planner’s idea was for him to be a ‘Hardened Street Fighter’
He is an unqelcome pupil of Adler’s, and he calls Adler ‘master’ but he has no idea what Adler is thinking.
He’s not a very flexible type, and he broods a lot.
His original design had him wearing a big hood and cap and looked very strong, but, you couldn’t see his face so he gave up on that design and made him have short hair like a monk.
He is a tiger, in contrast to Adler’s lion and so his design alternated between yellow and black.
Because he’s a street fighter, at first Ohmura didn’t want to give him any particular ‘school’ (like Kendo) to follow, and had him wearing big baggy pants and a down vest (think Marty McFly, BTTF2) like they were a uniform, but he got advice from Sugimori and decided that before he was a street-fighter, he had done Karate.
His dad, who was an assistant karate instructor, said to him something like ‘No matter what the fight, always where your Obi [belt]’ and designed Marshall from that backbone.

Caitlin
A more grown up version of the Caitlin from Platinum and HGSS.
Because it’s is a few years later [since those games’ plots] she may look a little older.
When she was in the Battle Frontier she was supposed to look/be about 14,
and they designed her this time based on the element of the Battle Frontier version, but also gave her a tonne more hair.
He personally wanted someone who used Psychic-types to use their hair for psychic-abilities and so the two ribbons on either side of her hair are held up by psychic-powers and protect the hair-style.
They wanted to give her a slight air of self-importance so they folded her hands behind her back.
Because she’s been using Pokemon since she’s been young, she’s quite strong, but she can’t control her own psychic abilities and may loose the ability to control them.
Because of that chance, she came to the Unova region alone to challenge herself.
However, it is hinted that Darach may be watching over her closer than we think.

...why has this not recieved any comments?

Hints about Grimsley's past are littered through his dialogue like tickertape after a street parade, and he does reference gambling, though in a metaphorical sense. Even before reading this, I definately got the vibe that he'd been through some form of hardship prior to becoming a member of the Elites. Funnily enough, I always thought the conveyor belt leading to him vaguely resembled a roulette wheel, and assumed this may be part of the reason he's a dark type user. I wonder if he cheats in casinos? :p

I just fought Shauntel in the games, and now I can't look at her with seeing a giant cat's head on a human body.

Those two translucent heart shapes on Caitlin's hair always puzzled me, and I feel a little silly for not making the connection between them and the fact she trains psychic pokemon. I suppose not having control of her psychc abilities explains why you don't get to battle her in earlier games, though it does feel a little out of left field. It's weird picturing her as some bored psychic master when all this time I figured she was just some lazy rich chick.

D: Why can people not spell Marshal's name correctly? ;.;

*oh this is LOVE* <3 The Unova E4 are currently my all-time favorites. This is very good for me, all round. Nice to have the gambling aspect confirmed, too. And all Grimsley's warrior take makes sense, now.

Shauntal mentions in the dialogue that her scarf resembles her favorite Pokemon...but all I see is a Stunky nose. :0

And I like the mention of Darach being close by...now I can't help but imagine him hiding out under her bed or something.

Shauntal as a werewolf explains the weird neck thing that give her a broad shoulders.

Caitlin was designed to be about 14? Really weird when your design for 11 year olds look similar.

Because she’s been using Pokemon since she’s been young, she’s quite strong, but she can’t control her own psychic abilities and may loose the ability to control them.
Theory (somewhat) confirmed. Well, about the uncontrollable psychic powers anyway.

Also calling Darach cameo in the third version in the post-game.

I dunno...it almost makes it seem like he's meant to be somewhere in the game...

I've seen some people speculating that Grimsley's him, but that seems a bit far-fetched...

More far-fetched now that we're given their background. I don't know how being in the post-game for the third game means he's not in the game. He's just not shown. Would be nice if they expanded the Seven-Sages plot and he actually helped you catch one of them.

Also her hair style is maintained by psychic powers ._.

*looks at other character's hair*

A lot of people must have psychic powers then.

Why couldn't we have interviews like this before? It would be reassuring to know whether Agatha and Burtha are actually related >>;

Grimsley is now even more my favorite of the elites, though Shauntal is pretty interesting. But Grimsley's history... interesting.

I found everyone's background to be interesting, except for Shauntal.

Aspires to be a novelist? She isn't one already? Other than that we aren't given much else about her past, just her design.

Marshall, having actually learned a martial arts discipline before becoming a street-thug compliments his in-game story that he used to be like Cheren very well.

I would have enjoyed his hoodie look. Here's hoping that when they do the third version, that they also mix the game up a bit and also give old characters new artwork, with Marshal having his hoodie.

Maybe they didn't realize we were interested in character development D:

hence having fallen from grace/a wealthy family, he decided to get into gambling to win money... he also decided to get into promiscuity? perhaps not wearing socks is a sign of grimsley indulging in some foot fetishist's fantasies at the casino ;p

It would have been kinda fun if Grimsley was a member of the Riches family.

I do think he has the most interesting background out of them all. Shauntal is a bit lacking.

Awesome interview. More work went into this generation's Elite Four than I thought. Still, I wish they did something with Shauntal, Caitlin, and Grimsley outside of just battling them.

I'm still not a fan of Shauntal though. And Marshall (it should be spelled like that >_>) would've looked cooler with a hoodie imo (and without those weird blue teeth).

Darach is close by? D8 Duuuuude. I hope we see him in the 3rd version. Darach's hair was love, man.

And interesting concepts! Giima's family lost their fortune and he's now poor? Derp I never would have guessed that. 8D; I thought he was still rich. And them are roulette colors? HAH! And they say you don't learn anything from games! OTL

Ooh, I hope they do more like this for past characters. D8 I agree, I'm also curious about the Agatha/Bertha (non?) connection.

Hmm, I wonder where/when Darach will pop up. o_O;

I really love these types of interviews! Aren't there a few more too? I tried looking but I couldn't find them. Anyone know where they are?

It's not his teeth (at least, I think) it's those mouth protectors that Boxers wear.....

Surely a roulette is red and black, not red and blue? Or is it different in Japan?
