EVERYONE: Shadows Over Hoenn (A Choose Your Own Adventure Story)

Sure, it is unquestionably in the same baleful trance that Lairon had, but there's only so much poffins we have to offer; there's a good chance that Corphish is somewhere, presumably under that same influence. This trainer doesn't even recall owning a Zigzagoon, anyway. So... might as well resort to force and get refreshed in Pokemon battling.

Part 17
Sure, it is unquestionably in the same baleful trance that Lairon had, but there's only so much poffins we have to offer; there's a good chance that Corphish is somewhere, presumably under that same influence. This trainer doesn't even recall owning a Zigzagoon, anyway. So... might as well resort to force and get refreshed in Pokemon battling.
As you continue to look into the cage, the Zigzagoon, apparently quite a bit more unruly than Lairon, suddenly leaps out of the cage. You cry out and stumble back as it clings to your head, its hind claws raking across your face. After a few moments, you manage to pry it off and toss it to the ground. It scrambles to its feet and hisses at you, fur standing on end, before charging for your legs in that zig-zag pattern distinct to its species. You're able to get out of the way as it rushes past. You reach into your backpack. Doesn't look like there's much of a choice.
"Lairon! Time for some action!" The dusk ball bursts open and releases a brilliant white light that quickly solidifies and takes the form of your still red-eyed partner. Lairon roars ferociously as it prepares for combat. Perhaps, a little too ferociously... Next to Lairon, another light becomes a Loudred.
"Don't worry, I've got your back." The Rocket Grunt says, clutching a great ball. You nod and turn your gaze to the battle about to unfold.

The enraged Zigzagoon attacked!
You sent out Lairon!
- Lairon's moves are not currently set. It's your Pokemon, you tell me how you've trained it. Available moves include all level-up and TM/TR moves.
Team Rocket Grunt sent out Loudred!
- Team Rocket Grunt will give her own instructions to Loudred, but will attempt to synergise with your commands as best as possible, and is receptive to suggestions should you wish to give them.
- Loudred's moves: Supersonic, Uproar, Bite, Thunder Punch

Part 18
While Lairon has a good defense, and Zigzagoons are mainly phisycal attackers, some more won't hurt: Lairon, use Iron Defense!
Zigzagoon begins by charging headfirst with a Tackle as you give your command. Raising its body, Lairon presents as many armour plates towards the Zigzagoon as possible, all of them glowing a bright white as they reinforced themselves. As Zigzagoon slams into Lairon's reinforced head, the Iron Armour Pokemon bucked forward, flinging Zigzagoon into the air slightly.
"Thunder Punch!" The Rocket Grunt shouts, and Loudred steps up, slamming an electrically charged fist into the airborne Zigzagoon, blowing it across the room.It quickly gets up and hisses at you as its prepares for another strike.

Next command?

Part 19
Zigzagoon clambers to its feet on the other side of the room before rushing forward at blinding speeds, a white strip of light trailing behind it.
Let's play it safe, Lairon use Protect!
At your command Lairon takes a similar defensive pose to before, and projects a green dome of energy around its body. Zigzagoon comes to a dead stop as it slams into the barrier. As Zigzagoon claws and bites at Lairon's shield, the Rocket Grunt calls out to you.
"Cover your ears!" You look at her confused for a moment, her hands over her own ears, before remembering what Pokemon she's commanding and hastily plugging your own ears. You see her tell Loudred... Something. You're not 100% sure what. Loudred spends a few seconds taking a deep breath, before screaming at the top of its lungs, stomping its feet, and blasting even more raw deafening noise from the speakers in its ears. Even through your plugged ears, you can feel the force of the sound vibrating your skull. You look over at Zigzagoon to see it desperately trying to cover its ears, its mouth wide open in what were likely cries of pain. You unplug your ears when the sound dies down as Loudred runs out of breath, your ears sore but not damaged. Lairon, protected from the violent sound by its dome, drops the barrier and shoves the prone Zigzagoon back across the room, giving some space to your team.
"Wait... What's that?" The Rocket Grunt asks, looking over at Zigzagoon. As you look closer, you see what she saw: strange wisps of dark energy floating up from Zigzagoon's fur, steadily growing in intensity. It once again fixes those red, hateful eyes on your group, but with an even greater malice and ferocity than you'd seen either it or Lairon give previously. It roars at you, the dark energy flaring to surround its entire body, coating its form in writhing darkness as it prepares its next attack.

Seems things are starting to heat up. What's your next move?

You only have one Pokemon, no healing items, no understanding of the situation, and you're in hostile territory. Recall Lairon (in case it's not as obedient as usual) and flee.

(Sorry folks @-@; I was pretty busy...)

Well, we haven't dealt anything against the Zigzagoon yet, haven't we? There's definitely bad vibes going on... but it won't hurt to advocate for something risky for once?

Body Press.

The current state of the prompts is a stalemate between two incompatible options. You can't continue the fight and flee from it at the same time. If one of the prompts receives more likes than the others within a few days, that prompt will be chosen to continue the story. If the prompts are still tied, I'll choose the prompt I personally prefer and continue using that one.

Part 20
"What the hell is going on!?" The Rocket Grunt shouted, holding down her hat as the wind from the flaring aura threatened to blow it off.
"Why are you asking me!?" You shout. "How should I know!?" As you're talking, Zigzagoon growls and swipes with its front claws, one after the other. As each swipe occurs, a wave of that dark energy shoots across the room, knocking Lairon and Loudred back. The Rocket Grunt flails her arms in front of her, frantically attempting to figure out what the heck that last attack was. Thinking on your feet, you figure that the best way to get the situation under control is to pin Zigzagoon down and keep it from moving.
Body Press.
At your command, Lairon rushes forward. Zigzagoon, charges itself in response, the dark aura cloaking its form. The two collide head-on, pushing against each other. After a few moments, Lairon shoves its head to the side slightly, throwing Zigzagoon off balance. Seizing the moment, Lairon pushes Zigzagoon backwards, driving it into the wall. Zigzagoon snaps at Lairon's face as it's pressed continually into the wall, Lairon snapping back to keep it in check. The plan works for a minute or two, Zigzagoon steadily weakening under Lairon's hold. Soon, however, Zigzagoon roars, and its aura flares once more, blowing Lairon away and causing it to slide across the floor. Lairon roars ferociously as it scrambles back onto its feet. Zigzagoon watches, breathing heavily, its aura weakly rising from its body in wisps now, rather than fiercely flaming as it was before.

Zigzagoon seems close to its limit. The next attack will probably do it in. What'll it be?

I agree; Dig's a good option. Let's hope your ally has a ball to capture it, because leaving it around, unconscious and clearly beaten up, may be very well more suspicious than it seeming to disappear.

Part 21
You command the final attack.
The Zigzagoon is surely on maximum alert, so body press is probably not going to be as effective as before, so its better to use something else: Lairon, dig!
Roaring, Lairon strikes the ground with its claws, easily tearing through the flooring and underlying foundation. As it's digging, you notice something, and a pit forms in your stomach. Lairon's letting off dark wisps. Within moments Lairon's disappeared into the ground, and all traces of the wisps were gone. The Rocket Grunt, having apparently regained her composure, shouts an instruction of her own.
"Supersonic!" She calls. Loudred blasts a wave of super-high pitched sound directly towards Zigzagoon. Its eyes cross and its stance becomes unsteady as the sound's effect takes hold. Zigzagoon stumbles in all directions, trying desperately to regain its composure. A few moments later, the floor behind Zigzagoon bursts open in a blast of dark flame, revealing Lairon, cloaked in that same sickly dark aura. Snarling, Lairon grabs hold of Zigzagoon's tail in its mouth and begins to swing it around like a rag doll. Lairon slams Zigzagoon into the ground a few times before tossing it into the air. As Zigzagoon falls toward the ground, Lairon rears back onto its hind legs and roars. Just as Zigzagoon impacts the ground, Lairon slams back down, causing dark spikes of stone to burst from the ground below Zigzagoon, knocking it back into the air before retracting as it falls. Lairon, still cloaked in the dark aura, stares at its foe lying defeated on the ground. Seemingly deciding that there was nothing more to do with Zigzagoon, Lairon turns towards Loudred and growls.
"Seriously... What the hell is going on..." She whispers, more to herself than to you, as she takes in the situation in front of her.

Let's hope your ally has a ball to capture it, because leaving it around, unconscious and clearly beaten up, may be very well more suspicious than it seeming to disappear.
Something tells you this isn't quite the time for such a thing. We'll get back to this later, but for now, how do you handle Lairon's disturbing development?

Well, we didn't use all of the poffins for a reason, so I say its time to use them again. If the first poffin doesn't calm it down a bit, then I'll have to ask our ally to use Supersound on Lairon so I can approach it more safely.

Supersonic will probably just make it more aggressive.
Speak gently and softly to Lairon and, once it's closer, recall it to its Ball.

Part 22
Oh, hi, it's been a while, huh? Yeah, I kinda fell off of updating this and then just couldn't bring myself to come back to it 'cause it's just kinda awkward to a point, y'know? Like, I have a reason, kinda, I guess, but not really so much an excuse. But I'm back to it now, and I'll try to keep updating it until it's done.
A quick recap of events so you don't need to run over the entire story again (though you could if you wanted, it's only 21 updates up to this one):
  • You woke up in a strange place, unable to remember anything before the last day or so, with your two Pokemon, Lairon and Corphish, missing.
  • You located Lairon, who has been transformed from his sweet and cuddly self into a vicious beast.
  • With the help of a Team Rocket Grunt, you placated Lairon with some poffins and returned it to its ball.
  • You traveled through a short underground tunnel with the Rocket Grunt to the R&D building to learn more about the strange phenomenon plaguing Lairon.
  • You found a Zigzagoon suffering from the same affliction as Lairon, and together with the Rocket Grunt defeated it in battle.
  • After the battle, Lairon became wrapped in a dark aura and turned its anger towards its comrade, bringing us to the current moment:
Just try to placate it with the Poffins currently around, and/or talk it into approaching; then get the critter back home in its ball.
"Hey, buddy." You say as you slowly slip your bag off your shoulder, reaching in to get out the box of poffins. They calmed it down last time, so maybe they'll work again. But it also wasn't this bad last time. "It's ok, don't worry, it's all gonna be alright." You produce a poffin from the box, Lairon glaring at you and growling the entire time, its dark aura still blazing. As much as you desperately want to reach out to it, your survival instincts scream at you to keep your distance from whatever is happening here. You gently toss the poffin towards Lairon. Its eyes instantly lock on to the flying bun and it leaps, maw wide. It snaps its mouth closed on the bun as it lands. It gnashes down on the poffin and shakes its head back and forth, half-chewed chunks flying from its mouth. It didn't eat it. Heck, you're not sure if it even really tasted it. Once Lairon had finished demolishing the poffin, it turned at you and charged.
"Thunder Punch!" You feel yourself being flung sideways as the Rocket Grunt's Loudred buries its electrically charged fist in Lairon's face, sending it skidding a little bit, the Grunt herself lying on top of you after tackling you to the side. "I'm sorry, but we can't deal with whatever this is." She says, helping you to your feet. You get up and take in the scene, Loudred standing between you and Lairon, who was getting up. Desperately, you pull Lairon's Dusk Ball from your bag and aim it at your Pokemon, calling for a recall. The red beam shoots from the ball, and dissipates on Lairon's aura. The return beam can't even touch it like this. It's not responding to poffins or your voice, and it can't be returned. You're either going to have to cut your losses and get out of here, or try to weather this down in a battle.

You have 5 poffins left.
You can definitely make it to the door to the rest of the R&D building if you go now. You might be able to get back to the tunnel if you're quick. Or, maybe, you can have Loudred and the Rocket Grunt try and battle Lairon down.
