I thought it was painfully obvious since they had the minor characters watching in the Johto league too.

The voice actor for Gary has quit long ago, as far as I know. Best they could do with him if he was there would be a non-speaking role.

Around the time of his departure at the end of Johto, there were rumors that the reason he was leaving was because his seiyuu had decided to quit. I don't know if there was ever anything behind those rumors, but he did have his original seiyuu in the side story episode where he appeared over a year later.

Even if his seiyuu decided to quit, which I had heard awhile back, something like him just sitting there watching the league on TV wouldn't be impossible. Bleh. I can hope.

Why did his voice actor quit exactly? Was it a payment dispute or something? In any case I hope this doesn't mean the end of Gary permanently - his hoso gave us some light at the end of the tunnel.

Ookido-Hakase, Kenji, and Hanako also were shown watching it on TV, but those cameos were guaranteed.
