If anyone is confused with shake types... these are the ones I know
white flecks/small

White flecks/large

Yellow flecks/small

Yellow flecks/large

tiny little yellow dots in the centre of the shake/fast/slow

bearly visible yellow dots in the centre/fast/slow

normal shake/fast/medium/slow

Very small shake...

Those are all of the ones i know of. If you see differant ones post them. Also i might not be an expert on chaining but i think this is how the chance prosess works. eg.

Chain 36

normal chance 1/8192 or what ever it is...
8192 divided by you chain (36 in this case)=227.5
new chance= 1/227.5
ta-daaaa my theory buuut also if anyone forgot...

Your chains can also break by "THE RANGE FACTOR"
the range factor is this. Imagin a grass like this 10*10 @=grass #= shaking spots
11=you

Now lets look at the patch two spaces to the right of you...
its "RANGE"=2,4,5. So the true range of that patch=11.To determine a range you must count all of the patches near it by the smallest amount of spaces and don't forget that the corners count too. So the one in the corner in very bad because it is like 1,1,7 because of the edge but it is still possible to keep a very lucky chain off running into corner patches... P.S try to get the range number as high as possible.

If you read all of this you deserve a medle because it is sooooooooooooooo long. Good luck eeveeeon :)

I came SOOO close to getting a shiny Baltoy yesterday! I was being SO careful and got the chain up to almost 40. I was primarily just resetting at that point but thought I saw a good one and got tripped up.

Note: if the patches you see fit all the rules listed, but two or more seem like they could equally be the furthest away - even if there's even the slightest doubt - reset. I should've been more patient - I had like 450 Max Repels! lol

I know,it's really hard make a high chain(my highest one is 32)and sometimes it could be boring, but it's the only way to chatch easer a shiny pokemon...

Those are all of the ones i know of. If you see differant ones post them. Also i might not be an expert on chaining but i think this is how the chance prosess works. eg.

This is definitely the dimension of the game that I find most challenging, especially when I have to chain rarer pokemon that occur in sparkly grass. There are just too many similar options to trip you up, no matter how many types there really are. Also, I truly believe that this subtle patch appearance factor really kicks in as you approach 40. I have lost many, many chains to a patch that follows all of the rules I used to chain to, say 35 or 38, only to break a chain as I am only a couple away from 40. I think the game throws in those slightly different patch types in that last leg of the chaining marathon. Just another reason to love or hate gamefreak. Love 'em if you appreciate the complexity that makes this challenging. Hate 'em if you really want the shinies and don't want the challenge.

Either way, this is another factor in how you play those last 5 legs of the chain to 40. One option: chain to 40 and then reset. The second option: chain to 35 and then reset, understanding it will take you longer. How much longer? That's yet to be determined, but I think, much much longer, on average.

Chain 36

normal chance 1/8192 or what ever it is...
8192 divided by you chain (36 in this case)=227.5
new chance= 1/227.5
ta-daaaa my theory

This is one of the theories. One I saw early on and latched onto hoping to be true, as this suggests that chaining to 40 is really not that advantageous, and you'd be better served, given the many way of breaking your chain (choosing the wrong patch geometrically, choosing the wrong patch type, etc.), by chaining to say 20 and then resetting, because the odds aren't that different. If true, a chain of 20 would give odds of (8192/20)/4 patches = ~1/100, while a chain of 40 gives odds of (8192/40)/4 patches= ~1/50. The opposing theory, also unconfirmed, suggests that your odds really don't increase much above the 1/2,000 chances of encountering a shiny patch with each reset, until you get your chain up to about 35. Then it rapidly increases to about 1/50. Here's that graph reported earlier, with some approximate odds interpolations I added:

probabilitycurvewithMaxRepels.jpg

Of course, this has not been verified either, so your theory may be correct. How do we determine which is true? Collect data! We have basically shown that chaining above 40 DOES NOT increase your odds of encountering a shiny. Here are those data plotted:
resetchart1.jpg
[/QUOTE]

So, it's a bad idea to chain above 40. Stop at 40 and reset!

But, chaining between 30 and 40 - how does this change your shiny encounter odds - now there's the key question. We need data, especially from those that want to stop chaining in that interval and start resetting. If you are one of those hearty souls, PLEASE keep track of your search effort by counting your steps (or Max Repels). That step-counting poketch tool will do this easily. Just zero the counter before you start running/resetting, and write down the # of steps you are at when you see each shiny. In fact, I will start this off today. I am at a chain of 35 Mightyena and have had about 4 chains broken recently between 35-40 in that field of grass (going after Mightyena and Houndoom in diamond and pearl, respectively). So, I will stop chaining and start counting steps, hopefully to find a shiny Mightyena. My guess is, I will probably be resetting for a very long time. If that chart is correct, I will need to use about 75 Max Repels.

buuut also if anyone forgot...

Your chains can also break by "THE RANGE FACTOR"

Hmm...maybe I'm reading your thoughts wrong eeveeon. These ideas are quite different than those proposed by Skye, who proposes that the range rules for encountering the target pokemon are influenced by distance from the reset location, not the surrounding patch geometry. If you haven't, read this post: http://bmgf.bulbagarden.net/showpost.php?p=411205&postcount=1503

Now, there is also the "spawning" factor that influences whether, and how many new patches "spawn" after a reset. The current theory, widely supported by observation, is that after every reset, one patch spawns in each of 4 concentric rings of grassy patches around the reset location. If you are on the edge, you may see none as they all could spawn outside of the field. If you are at least 1 row in from the edge and completely surrounded by patches in all 8 directions, you are ensured of having at least 1 new patch spawn in that first ring. Obviously, the farther from the edge you are, the more patches you will see, up to the maximum of 4. That's why you should try to reset near the center once you've decided to start resetting, to increase the number of patches you spawn, and increase you odds of encountering a shiny patch.

Totoro, I've tried resetting at 35 to test how long it'd take, but so far I keep getting to 20,000+ steps without seeing a shiny, at which point I usually either give up and keep chaining, or slip and accidently step into a shaking patch. So I'm not really able to get any data. :( But I at least think this supports the thoery we've been testing, since if eeveeon's theory was true, the chance would be somewhere around 1/58 for each reset... meaning I should have seen a large number of shinies by now. But I wouldn't be surprised if I was just incredibly unlucky.

Yeah, that's pretty much been my experience too Niele. Maybe I'm re-thinking that plan to reset at 35?! But I am also thinking that I will perhaps break my chain getting those last 5, as I often seem to do. And it's so much harder emotionally to suffer a broken a chain when you are so close! Hmm...one of those rock and a hard place decisions! Maybe I'll just watch some football...Go Packers!!

Update: Well, a cricket broke my Mightyena chain at 36 on a 4-7 patch (could it have been slightly more sparkly - who knows), but the Packers came bacl to beat the Chargers, so I'll take the bad with the good.

I got a chain of Aron to ten, then the eleventh one survived the first hit, and used Roar. Grr. Serves me right for using a variable-strength attack like Magnitude, I suppose, but it's still incredibly annoying. Better that it happens at ten than at thirty-nine, though. =)

Quick hint for chaining pokemon that know the move roar. I have been chaining (unsuccessfully) mightyena and houndoom, which both know roar and I've been fretting what to do to prevent them from using it when I find a shiny and am trying to catch it. Paralyzing and even inducing sleep seemed somewhat risky. Then I recalled (you probably guessed this long before me) that a pokemon ability - suction cups - prevents foe pokemon from fleeing. Lileep, cradily and octillery all can be found with this ability, and it also prevents whirlwind attacks. Now I confidently go after roaring pokemon using my cradily. Now if only I can get past 38 on my chains!!!

Finally got an Absol swarm today after waiting weeks since my last one. ^^

Got 3 shinies so far, up to chain 44. I've used I think 60 Max Repels, with resetting still going strong and 198 Max Repels still in bag. I'm not stopping til the swarm leaves. >:3

It won't leave until you quit or break the chain. You can chain past midnight on a swarm without it ending. Congratulations on the absol. I WILL get mine someday.

Thanks!

And that's news to me, had no idea a swarm chain could continue past midnight, that's pretty cool, and useful info. And if you'd like, I could trade one of mine to you if you want, though I have no idea right now about if they even have good stats. ^^;

Edit: Found 3 more Absol while trying to extend the chain, broke at 61 on a Shellos. So that makes a total of 6 shinies that chain, using up around.. 100 Max repels between 40 and 61. I just wish I recorded the data to help you guys, I have issues focusing on resetting and making sure I don't waste any steps between resets (i.e. walking more than 50 steps before reset), and in the end reset the step counter for some reason or another. >.<

I got an Absol swarm a couple of days back, but gave up on it. That Pressure was just too irritating. Plus, I was busy all day, so I didn't have time to start a chain before midnight. =)

Caught a shiny Roselia on a chain of 2 yesterday. That makes 2 shinies I've found on a chain of 2.

I can't seem to get far in a chain, though. It always breaks around 30. Just gotta keep trying, though, since I've been following all of the tips and tricks.

I got a shiny Gloom from the grassy area on Route 229 nearest the Resort Area, though that can be a tad tricky, since there's lots of different Pokemon available there.

Pressure isn't so bad to deal with, my Weavile has a total 70 PP for attacking, given a lot of Absol appear with Super Luck ability I get to 40 without using it all. In case I do run out, I keep Max Elixers and Leppa Berries on me.

Hope you get another swarm soon so you can have another go at it. ^^

Hi everyone. Erm, well, ages ago I was in the safari zone and I happened to come across a shiny skorupi. Of course I wasn't too experienced at pokemon and I didn't know how to telll if a pokemon was shiny, but since I didn't have that pokemon I caught it anyway. I found out later on that it was shiny and was really surprised. Then I came across here and I decided to give chaining a go. Theres a slight problem though - With me only having 12 Max Repels on me and hardly any money, I can't buy any. Does anyone know how to get money? :/ :|
