Lol sorry... Pachirisu looks more purple than pink to me, so I wrote your name incorrectly. Won't happen again! I used the static trick to chain shinx and it was my first shiny pokemon so I guess it works. It won't be a problem staying out of the rare patches for me, I'm really bad at chaining in those. I suppose I'll see what needs speed EV training and see if I can chain Pachirisu. I've noticed that I get much, much less frustrated if my chains break when I'm EV training. Usually I need to EV train something in speed or special attack, and there are lots of nice things to chain for those EVs. I keep trying psyduck but I always fail... I got to 39 once though... grrr!

I need to stop posting so much...

Ah, no problem :)

It's really useful to do something while you're chaining at the same time, so it doesn't feel like you've wasted your time when your chain breaks.

Good luck with chains. I have to get ready for school now (It's 7:00am here).

Still no luck..

aww man, I've been chaining for app. a month in a half, and still no luck with a shiny..I'm starting to lose hope here. Any advice? My friend saw 49 meditite, but accidentally broke the chain, meanwhile, I can't even get past a chain of 16! I heard some people catch shiny geodudes with just a chain of thirteen..why can't it be that simple for me?? ahh well, gtg get my shower, and see if I can catch a shiny afterwards...

I'd say just keep at it. It all depends on how bad you want that shiny. My first shiny didn't come easily... I went through several broken chains and never found an early shiny. I didn't get my first shiny until I finally reached 40. But also when I started, I would often reset at 35 or so. Sometimes this works (although it takes a long time) but sometimes it just doesn't. I personally think luck is a big factor when it comes to chaining. I would also read this thread religiously both before and after I caught my first shiny, so maybe it would help if you went back and read the older posts. I learned a lot from them. Don't give up!

Have you done all the usual tips? Chaining swarms, chaining Geodude, chaining Ponyta, chaining Shinx with a pokemon with static first in the party, etc? I also prefer to chain in the plain green patches rather than the yellow ones, as I think it's easier to tell the different types apart.

swarm pokemon of the day: krabby

Well, I decided to chain my swarm which so happened to be krabby at route 226. I managed to get past 16, all the way to 21, but..it was sadly broken by those god forsaken spearows! ugh! My hopes keep gtting lower. I've read all the guides, watched all the youtube video guides, but none seems to work..my friend on the other hand, saw three, and owns two. grr..

Ugh, I hate fearows the most over there. I actually had some trouble with krabby. I got lucky and got a shiny at 30, but then my chain broke around 33. You'd think that would be a nice patch of grass to chain in, but I don't know. I have failed at chaining raticate several times while EV training. At least I didn't feel too bad cuz I got the speed EVs and raticate is pretty useless, but still. Really though, don't give up... it takes a lot of practice to get the hang of it, and even still, a bit of luck. When you see your first shiny patch you'll be really excited. :)

Hey Shinyzard and Luc, you really should try chaining one of the poke's in that huge patch on Rt 222. Go for something in non-sparkly, "regular" grass, as I think it's MUCH safer. I lose a lot of chains in the 30's when chaining sprakly grass, and I think it's cause the game throws in similar shakers on that last leg of the chain. Anyway, Rt. 222 is HUGE so you can reset in the center and have a good chance of getting a safe shaking patch that is not on an edge and is in that 4th ring. Stick with patches that are 7 stepsaway when you're up to 30 or so, otherwise, remember to reset if the patch you walk into is not clearly farther away. Go back to Skye's guide and great pix if you haven't seen those. Otherwise, remember to STOP when you reach 40!!! Start resetting, and you WILL get a shiny, probably within 12-15 Max Repels (equal to about 50 resets as it seems each patches odds of being shiny is about 1/200, and with 4 patches that means the odds one of them is shiny is about 1/50).

Hope you get one soon!!

Am I the only one who DOESN'T like route 222? I think it's too easy to go out of range there, and my chains always seem to break for reasons I can't figure out. I finally got a chain of 40 skitty there, but all other chains before and after have always been broken.

But yes... I love how once you get to 40, a shiny is basically guaranteed, assuming you don't run out repels, forget to use one, or slip while resetting. Actually Totoro... those charts you did to show the odds helped me a LOT! It wasn't until then that I realized that the odds pretty much don't increase after 40, and if you want a lot of shinies then you should just keep resetting in between each one, rather than chaining higher. Also, I realized that resetting at 35 is basically a waste of time. I have done it and gotten lucky before, but really, I'd rather try pushing the chain a little higher and lose it than be stuck at 35 for who knows how long. Also from what you posted, the odds aren't THAT bad at say, 38, so if I'm having a tough time, I will sometimes start resetting around there.

I also agree and believe that somehow, the game DOES make it harder when you get higher in the chain. Like someone had mentioned here before, I do see 4 different types of plain green patches. Normally I will stick to the two slower ones. Now out of those, one has a circle in the middle of it, and one doesn't (I prefer the circle as I think it's easier to see; and by the way, there are also faster versions of both of these, making the total 4). What I don't understand is that you can seem to mix and match them for a while... with seemingly no logic behind it. I usually will not switch between fast and slow, but I will switch between circle and no circle... especially in areas that are so small that you don't have much of a choice... but when I start to get mid 20's to 30's, I will be patient and stick to only slow circle. When I don't do that, my chain will usually break in the 30s. However, sometimes it will break anyway, even though I clearly picked the right patch and the right distance. There must be a random factor involved or some weird pattern detail that I haven't picked up on (or anyone else for that matter). Who really knows though. With my machop chain, I was so impatient that I kept switching between all 4 kinds of plain green patches, even in the 30s, and started resetting at 38... ending up with 12 shinies when I felt I had enough.

Will we ever figure out all the mysteries of chaining??

I don't really buy into the range thing, which suggests that all 4 patches from the previous reset must be in range when you reset again. I have only had chains bust if I move far enough away so that all patches shaking from a reset move off screen. Is that what you mean? If so, that's pretty easy to avoid IMO.

I leave this to all of you hawkeyes out there. I can distinguish 3 types of patches, plain, light sparkles and bright sparkles, and of course shiny patches makes 4 for me. I don't dispute that there are more, I just can't distinguish them. I have a hard enough time just seeing all 4 and then trying to remember where they were so I can count steps, etc. Fortunately, I seem to do OK with the plain patches, but suppose I lose most of my chains in the 35-40 range to slightly different patches. Of course, making it to 38 and then losing a chain only makes it more frustrating! Those [email protected][email protected]$! As if all of the other rules didn't make it hard enough! Just kidding...I love you Gamefreak...

I'm currently fighting my second shiny Starly in a chain of 40. I was bored and so randomly decided to try chaining them as I like the colour and after how easy chaining Bidoof's in the same area was, I figured it was worth a try.

Again, like the Bidoof's I got lucky early! I found a shiny patch at 15 which contained a L3 Quirky female. Caught her in my second Ultra Ball and continued chaining. Got to 40 easily and just spent over an hour (and about 50+ Max Repels) to find this second one. He's L3, Gentle natured and came with a Yache Berry.

And I just managed to break my chain by not paying attention. Bugger.

Edit: Less than an hour later, I'm back to 40. Have used 23 Max Repels. I'd recommend Route 201 for anybody new/having trouble chaining elsewhere. And while typing this, I found number 3! Going to have the full evolution line now. :)

Edit 2: Got three shinies out of my new chain. Just lost it as only one patch shook, didn't register it and moved off screen. Ah well. Its my new highest chain as well (48- I battled a few extra non shinies along the way! Overall, I used 49 Max Repels.

still no shinies...

I was just recently trying to chain my swarm, which was the pokemon I've been waiting for, beldum. They were located at route 228, but the only problem was it was sandstorming there, so It was really difficult to see the patches shake. My max chain during that was about 3 or 4, until it was broken by cacnea. It amazes me how people can chain in storms. I still have not found any shinies..and my max chain is 21 of krabby..but I will try route 222, and many others. I think my main problem is finding a grassy area that's big enough..All the grassy areas I find seem to be too small..or have a lot of varities of different pokemon. For example, route 210, I was chaining ponyta there, the big problem was that ponyta wasn't the only pokemon there. There was also Geodude, kricketune, chansey, and mime Jr. Ugh!!! If anybody has any excellent routes they use and would like to share, please share!!!

Thanks,
Sam
