If the chances of seeing one shiny patch at a chain of forty are one in two hundred, then the chances of seeing two simultaneously are one in forty thousand, or only slightly less than five times the probability of running into a shiny without chaining...

Never tell me the odds

If the chances of seeing one shiny patch at a chain of forty are one in two hundred, then the chances of seeing two simultaneously are one in forty thousand, or only slightly less than five times the probability of running into a shiny without chaining...

Well EXACTLY Belthazar, that's why it would be so awesome, even if you couldn't scoop them both up.

BTW, I jinxed myself by describing the high shiny encounter rate for my early geodudes. I ended up getting 13 before quitting and running from one out of monotony, but my 12th shiny took 500 resets (>25,000 steps) before it showed up. That's a new record for me. Not sure why I stuck it out in hindsight other than stubborness. I started Phanpy today and after getting to 40 it took me 107 and 148 resets to get my first two shinies! That's more than double the number it typically takes. So, I'm officially disowning any luck I claimed to be having (anything to break the spell and get back to quicker encounters).

I'm to the point now where I can pretty much chain any swarm to 40 and get shinies, but still suck at chaining rarer pokemon that occur only in sparkly patches, and don't get me started on chaining in weather - I can't do it (although haven't really practiced much.)

You know what I was wondering? Would it be helpful to maybe post images of each of the grass field areas (Are those available anywhere on the web already?) and compare where we reset? For example, I've been chaining above 207 for geodudes and Phanpys and find that to be a nice big patch to chain in. You can reset at the midpoint of the left side of the patch in such a way that you have the 4th ring occur on the edge to the east and west, but on the north and south it's buffered by several more grass rows, so you have a good chance to spawn safe patches in the 4-5 to 4-8 range. I wonder if others reset there when they chain in that field. I find myself more and more really looking at the field before I start chaining to find the "sweet spot" to reset in that gives me the best odds of a safe patch to enter and keep my chain going without falling on an edge. Just a thought.

Well, at least you are still getting the shinies... I have had horrible luck with this lately. Everything I've been chaining breaks in the 30s, whether I follow my 4 normal grass rule or not.

I wish I had a way of taking a picture of the grass. I typically just go anywhere that gives me the best chance of not only being guaranteed to see all 4 patches, but also not having that outside ring be on the edges, if possible. So far though, whenever I have reset for shinies and one comes up on an edge, it has never broken my chain. I don't know if this is just really good luck or if the game doesn't let your chain get broken by a shiny patch, not matter where it is?

I broke a Shinx chain when the shiny patch appeared on an edge, so it is possible for the chain to break when you finally get your shiny.

I've also been having bad luck recently with chaining (not that I've been doing much really but when I have...). My swarm today was Pidgey which I love in shiny form but the highest I managed to get was 19. I also got a Starly chain to 49 a while ago (not sure if I posted it here) and was resetting to get 50 as a shiny but after an hour and nothing I switched off. I think I'm going to hold off chaining for a while, it's getting to be too annoying.

I'm having a break from chaining. I've got some good shinies, but I need to start EV training them. My highest lv shiny is still at lv38, the rest are around or under lv25.

None of my chains have broken upon entering a shiny patch, wherever it is (thankfully). I'm wondering if you'll always find the Pokemon you're chaining in a shiny patch. Is it possible to find a different shiny Pokemon than the one you're chaining?

I've found a shiny Ponyta while chaining Kriketunes, but it wasn't in a shiny patch, and may have simply been a normal one-in-a-million shiny. =)

Wow, thanks for putting this topic up, Shuko! The advice is starting to help already. =] I'm trying to get a shiny Ditto right now. The highest chain I've gotten so far is 10, but I'm new at this. I lost that chain because I walked out of range of the PokeRadar. =/ But I'm just glad that I don't have to search for one in Cerulean Cave on FireRed anymore. I felt like my head was gonna explode from pure boredom. >___<

One of my friends has been trying to get a shiny Eevee for a while now, they had a good high number when someone interrupted them and they walked into the wrong patch of grass. I'm sure they'll get it eventually, though.

Has anyone here caught a shiny Ditto before?

Wow, arcashinx, that's very lucky! The earliest I ever found a shiny was on a chain of seven.

Anyway, chaining has been very frustrating for me lately. It's taking me many attempts to get my chains up to 40, and when I do, I keep messing up somehow by slipping my finger or forgetting to respray the repel (I have no idea why I did this...)

Then today, I decided to give Snorunt a try. I was very lucky and not only managed to encounter Snorunt on my first try, but also made it all the way to 40. But my luck stopped there. It took me about 500+ resets to finally encounter a shiny patch, and it was a male Snorunt =( (I'm looking for a female). After that, I reset around 700 more times, until finally I somehow slipped and went into the wrong patch and encounted a Machoke. Oddly enough, I didn't freak out too much when this happened; I just sighed and turned off my game. I guess I was absolutely sick of resetting by then so I wasn't as bothered. I was running pretty low on repel anyway.

So... no shiny Froslass for me. I might try again, but I'm definitely going to give it a rest for a little while.

Non-Shiny-Disease.. lol.. it's ok Fox.. Just try harder.. How bout chaining shinxs or starly first.. they're kinda easy.. especially shinx when u put a static pokemon in front of ur party.. if u're still confused on how to chain properly, just read the earlier post by Shuko.. it'll help a lot, trust me..

If you want to increase your chances of finding a female you can put a male Pokemon with Cute Charm at the front of your team before you enter a shiny patch. But then you can't use a Synchronizer..

Yeah, I was using a synchronizer so sadly that wouldn't work.

Well anyway, I decided to have another go and this time try chaining Pineco for something different. I was going to battle one random wild Pokemon first just to faint my Ralts, and encountered an Abra... at first I thought "oh great, waste of time", but then I noticed the sparkle animation! =D So yes, I encountered my first shiny Pokemon in D/P without the radar. I was afraid it'd teleport away, but I fortunately managed to catch it with a dusk ball. Yay. I guess it sort of makes up for the terrible luck I've been having otherwise.

Now I'm going to have a go at those Pineco.
