I got my first shiny pokemon, a beautiful Ditto, after a chain of 63 and am now working on chaining ponyta's. They're so pretty when shiny ^_^

Oh I meant to say that I do believe the graph that you posted a while back, Totoro. In fact it helped me a lot and it really put things in to perspective. Thanks!

Congrats on shiny Ditto, Syrinth... they are so hard to chain, I've tried it.

Anyway, I'm posting too much, back to chaining. :)

I was very sad to find out that breeding shiny dittos no longer increased chances of getting shinies... :'(

About the plain patches... I see slow and fast, is that what you mean by short and long? And out of both of those, I see ones with a circle in the middle, and ones without.

Yeah, I guess that's what I mean. But...I don't know that I believe they exist. After reading your post I watched very closely the patches as they shook while resetting to get numbers 6 and 7 shiny larvitar (I'm going for 20, what's the record for most shinies on one chain?). I only saw one type of "plain" patch. Now I do see some with circles in the center and some that don't appear to have that, but really wonder whether that is a difference, or if those are basically the same. I definietly DO NOT see some shaking at different rates or lengths of time. What I'm looking for is cases where I would see two "plain" patches shaking at the same time so I can compare them. Every time I see two or more plain patches, they shake the same length of time at exactly the same rate. Till I see different ones "side by side" or someone submits a video showing different types...I remain a non-believer of the religion that says there are multiple types of plain patches.

Congratulations on the shiny Rhydon and Ditto Dukeburger and Syrinth!

I'm glad you see the circles, Totoro! But like you also said, I don't know if there is really a huge difference. Then again though, why would they throw that in there? It's all a mystery, really. With the slow and fast shakes though... they are harder to notice, for me. Assuming they are real and do make a difference, I've gotten a feeling that they may be the thing that breaks my chains once in a while. For those, again I would say watch very carefully. The slow ones seem almost as if the whole patch is being taken and slowly rotated back and forth. The fast ones look as if the the blades of grass are actually shaking... or something. That's the best I can describe it. It really is a bit harder to notice than the circle and no circle, at least for me. I think maybe it happens less frequently. But sometimes I do pick up on it and I stay away from them. Who knows though. I think I mentioned this before, but with my Machop chain, I clearly saw slow shakes, fast shakes, circles and no circles... and I was just messing around and going to whatever which ones I wanted, and I started resetting at 38 and eventually got 12 shinies. I chained in the same place where Larvitar is, and I think maybe it is easier to see the difference when the grass is on that brown dirt... so try keeping an eye out for it if you can, Totoro.

In any case, I really wish I had a video camera so I could show the difference... or an emulator or something. Is anyone with access to either of these willing to help out?

And thanks... I've got 7 Rhydons so far... I should go for 20 but I think I'll stop at 15. I don't know what the record is, but 15 is the most I have gotten to with Meditite. I voluntarily stopped because I was there forever and felt I had enough. I've done this with a lot of my other high chains. Anyway, the Rhydons are really giving me a beating each time and breaking out of pokeballs so I'll have to see if I have enough healing items/balls to get me that high in the chain! Maybe we should have a contest, Totoro?

Stop at 40!!!!

Oh Syrinth, I hope you got some shinies from that chain. Really, I think there's enough data to show clearly that you gain NOTHING from chaining beyond 40. Once you're there, the goal should be to reset near the center of your patch over and over to spawn 4 patches each time. The whole point of chaining is to reduce the odds from 1/8000 to 1/200 for each patch of grass. After you're at 40, you're wasting your time and clearly risking losing out on all of your patient work to keep chaining. Reset and repeat. Once I've hit 40, I've never failed to get a shiny by this method once I read the threads and realized that longer chains do not increase your odds. Our experimenting seems to confirm this. It will take you about 50 resets (12-13 Max Repels, 2,500 steps, however you count it) on average before a shiny appears. I've had shinies appear after my 1st reset, or take as long as 500 resets, but most are right around 50-100 resets.

Nope, not a single shiny, and my ditto chain took me to 62 where I got my one.

I wasn't aware about the lack of change but thank you very much for informing me of this. *grumblingly works back up to 40*

I've got a spare ponyta if you want it. I just need to get my ^%#$ wireless port loaded up so I can trade! Let me know if you want it. I understand if you don't, I personally want to snag all of the shinies that can be had by chaining myself, but I'm happy to share when I get extra for those that don't mind adopting.

Sounds like you're good at chaining though, based upon your long chains, so next time you hit 40, stop, reset, and start collecting!! Good luck Syrinth!

Heh, thanks but yeah think I'm going to stick to this until I get them myself.

Actually screw it, I'll gladly take it off your hands. I'll catch another one myself when I'm not on a time limit and it'll help me with the lotto anyways :D

You're on! I've got ~375 Max repels left and will nab all I can before running out or goofing up! I've got 8 now, although they are stubborn! After the 1st two came easy, 5 of the next 6 have taken longer than average to show up and then most have required 3-4 balls to catch (quickball, then repeat ball, then ultraball, back to repeat ball...) Only for Tyrannitar. What can I say, I've had a soft spot for dinosaurs since I was 3!

Okay, I'm at 9 and I've got 545 super repels... so I guess we're about even, eh? Mine seem to be showing up close within average for the most part. The Rhydons are all at level 50+ though so I wasn't prepared haha. I'm using my level 82 Linoone to get their health down a bit, and it takes a beating each time.

If I don't screw up or get a patch on an edge or something, I am either going to run out of:

- Repels (most likely)
- Healing items
- Pokeballs (not likely, but I have to chuck so many each turn that I use up my healing items)
- Box space (very limited)

This should be fun, at any rate. Would you be willing to trade a shiny Larvitar for a shiny Rhydon when this is over?

I think you have an edge dukeburger (dukeburger? What is a dukeburger anyway?). I'm still looking for #9 and all of mine are coming late. I'm over 160 resets already looking for the latest. Plus, you have a big edge in repels...although they are super repels I guess, what does that cover, 150 steps? If so, I guess you're right, we're pretty even at that (laughing sinisterly...). Good luck!

As for the trade, you are welcome to one of my larvitars, but I'd rather capture the shiny rhinos myself, it's a component of the game I really like and so want to draw that out as much as I can. Hope you understand, no offense to what I'm sure are outstanding Rhydons! I am looking for a ton of other things though, so I'm sure you may have something you'd part with that I might like. If not, heck, you can just send me a bidoof and I'll set him free!

Update: I got # 9. Took 180 resets! I'm down to 357 Max Repels.

My user name comes from a favorite level in Duke Nukem 3D. I just use it a lot when signing up on websites because it's never taken.

Well, a super repel gives you 200 steps and a max repel gives you 250. So that means every 4 max repels equals 5 super repels, right? Not sure how to do the math to see how even we are without really thinking about it.

No offense taken, I totally understand. That's nice of you to still offer one, I'll have to PM you when we're done to see if I have anything good I can trade to you at least. Something better than a Bidoof I hope. :) Anyway, if you go for Rhydon, good luck... it only appears in either volcanic ash or sandstorm. The volcanic ash isn't too bad, but I did have to set my DS clock back so it would be light out when I play.

Glad you found number 9! I go by how many repels I used rather than resets... but in my language, 180 resets equals 45 super repels... which is a little more than twice the rate of how often you should find them. According to your graph, on average I should see a shiny for every 17 super repels. I usually see one at about 20 something. Number 10 actually took a while for me to find (about 60 super repels). But something I noticed is when that happens, the game seems to automatically make up for it. The next two shinies came pretty quick, so now I'm at 12 with 508 super repels left. Maybe I do have an edge, but I am really running out of box space. Nearly every time I get one, it'll go "Box X is full, transferred to box Y instead!" Yikes.

Update: D'oh! Got 14 shinies, and the last one appeared on an edge which ended up breaking my chain. Ahh well, they were starting to go into my last free box, and I know I would have been pretty unhappy if I caught one and it said "too bad! your boxes are full!" or whatever it would say in such a situation.

I didn't even break my own record... good luck Totoro, looks like you'll probably win this one. :)

EDIT: Oops, I didn't mean to double post, for some reason I hit the edit button on my last post but started writing in the quick reply box. Please forgive me. :(

EDIT 2: Well, this is the last time I chain something I really want without using synchronize. I stopped bothering with synchronize because my pokemon were averaging at less than 50% with the same nature. But nearly all of these Rhydons are either + special attack (how ironic) or neutral nature. And the few that aren't still aren't any good. This is depressing. Guess I'll just use a neutral natured one, ugh.
