For the first time, I found a shiny that was in the patch behind me. I thought it must've been a shiny patch, because it moved very differently from the other patches, and it didn't shake at all. Also I couldn't see the sparkles.
I think you can tell if the patch behind you is shiny because it moves slightly but doesn't shake. I was facing left when I saw it, so I'm not sure if you can see the sparkles if you're facing another direction.
But something I noticed is when that happens, the game seems to automatically make up for it. The next two shinies came pretty quick, so now I'm at 12 with 508 super repels left.
Update: D'oh! Got 14 shinies, and the last one appeared on an edge which ended up breaking my chain. Ahh well, they were starting to go into my last free box, and I know I would have been pretty unhappy if I caught one and it said "too bad! your boxes are full!" or whatever it would say in such a situation.
I didn't even break my own record... good luck Totoro, looks like you'll probably win this one.
EDIT: Oops, I didn't mean to double post, for some reason I hit the edit button on my last post but started writing in the quick reply box. Please forgive me.
EDIT 2: Well, this is the last time I chain something I really want without using synchronize. I stopped bothering with synchronize because my pokemon were averaging at less than 50% with the same nature. But nearly all of these Rhydons are either + special attack (how ironic) or neutral nature. And the few that aren't still aren't any good. This is depressing. Guess I'll just use a neutral natured one, ugh.
Nice run...14! You may win yet. I'm only at 11. I'll let you know. Sorry your Rhydons aren't the nature/stats you are looking for. I confess I never even look at those stats...guess I'm a bit naive in that dimension of the game. If I battled them more, I'd probably spend more time on that. Is there a really good guide explaining natures and stats, etc.? I agree, having a shiny rejected due to a full box would have been a bummer. How close were you to that? Send me a PM sometime and let me know what you're looking for in larvitar stats, etc. and I'll try to send you a good one.
Not sure if there is a really good guide, but here is a link that shows a table of all the natures:
http://www.psypokes.com/lab/natures.php
As for knowing whether or not the nature is any good, I just look at the stats for the pokemon's pokedex entry on pokemon.marriland.com.

I just started Shiny Hunting today after my friend told me how, this guide helps ALOT!
Wish me luck guys![]()
Does anyone know of a source that lists the Pokemon appearance rates in different areas? I remember looking at one a long time ago, but I can't find it anymore.
But anyway, I did manage to have some success with the Hoppip. I now have six shinies, evenly split between the genders, and four of them are the nature I wanted. I'm pretty satisfied. =)
Thanks dukeburger. BTW, I have caught you at 14. My 14th also was on the edge, but luckily spawned new patches after the capture (which took about 15 various pokeballs!) So far, of the 14 I've caught, all but 4 have taken longer than average to find, some considerably longer!
Another update: #15 showed up 20 resets later. It politely crawled into the first quickball I threw at it, which makes up for the stubborn little larvitard I caught the time before! I think I will quit at 20 if I make it that far. Still have about 275 Max Repels.
If not, can anybody recommend a good place to chain Starly? I feel like taking a break and going for an easier Pokemon, but one that will still be somewhat useful for me. It's found in so many places so I have no idea where to start...
Oh, thank you! That guide is very helpful. I don't think it's the exact same as what I looked at before (it had the percentages for all the Pokemon found in each field including when using the radar), but this will still help a lot. Thanks for the link!Maybe it's the Marriland guide you're thinking of? http://pokemon.marriland.com/dp-walkthrough.php
Nice work on the Hoppip shinies. I will try for those again soon, but the fields are pretty small for it, right? Is there a big field where you can hunt Hoppip?
Off topic, but how do I quote more than one person in a single post?
Yayness, I got a starly chain to 40! I hope I don't slip again, I've broken 4 starly chains of 40 like that...
