a few weeks after I started trying to chain I still have nothing. Highest chain of 5. And the two pokes I really want shiny (ponyta and ralts) I have chains of 1, and I can't even freakin find a dang ralts. Breeding for a shiny is going nowhere..I have about 150 ponytas in my boxes cuz i can't even release one without feeling awful! They're lvl 1! They can't survive on their own!

For the first time, I found a shiny that was in the patch behind me. I thought it must've been a shiny patch, because it moved very differently from the other patches, and it didn't shake at all. Also I couldn't see the sparkles.

I think you can tell if the patch behind you is shiny because it moves slightly but doesn't shake. I was facing left when I saw it, so I'm not sure if you can see the sparkles if you're facing another direction.

Yeah, I've also noticed that if you look left you can see more of the patch behind your head.

But something I noticed is when that happens, the game seems to automatically make up for it. The next two shinies came pretty quick, so now I'm at 12 with 508 super repels left.

Sometimes, but I've also had long strings of shiny pokemon that come only after longer than average searches. I've also had some come in easy batches. This makes me ponder whether shiny occurrence rates are linked with the occurrence rates of the pokemon. For example, geodude occurs much more frequently in the field at Rt 207, so would it follow that shiny occurrence also is higher there. Larvitars are more rare and I'm averaging about twice the search time for them. Coincidence, or related?

Update: D'oh! Got 14 shinies, and the last one appeared on an edge which ended up breaking my chain. Ahh well, they were starting to go into my last free box, and I know I would have been pretty unhappy if I caught one and it said "too bad! your boxes are full!" or whatever it would say in such a situation.

I didn't even break my own record... good luck Totoro, looks like you'll probably win this one. :)

EDIT: Oops, I didn't mean to double post, for some reason I hit the edit button on my last post but started writing in the quick reply box. Please forgive me. :(

EDIT 2: Well, this is the last time I chain something I really want without using synchronize. I stopped bothering with synchronize because my pokemon were averaging at less than 50% with the same nature. But nearly all of these Rhydons are either + special attack (how ironic) or neutral nature. And the few that aren't still aren't any good. This is depressing. Guess I'll just use a neutral natured one, ugh.

Nice run...14! You may win yet. I'm only at 11. I'll let you know. Sorry your Rhydons aren't the nature/stats you are looking for. I confess I never even look at those stats...guess I'm a bit naive in that dimension of the game. If I battled them more, I'd probably spend more time on that. Is there a really good guide explaining natures and stats, etc.? I agree, having a shiny rejected due to a full box would have been a bummer. How close were you to that? Send me a PM sometime and let me know what you're looking for in larvitar stats, etc. and I'll try to send you a good one.

It's okay, I was just a bit disappointed at first, but I figured out something I can do with one of the + special attack ones. It won't be the best, but the team I'm putting it on is just for fun anyway, and hey... shiny Rhyperior looks a lot better than his normal counterpart.

I've never competitively battled, but I'm trying to get into it. I've always been a little more interested in the collecting aspect of the game, which is why chaining shiny pokemon is fun (when it works). Not sure if there is a really good guide, but here is a link that shows a table of all the natures:

http://www.psypokes.com/lab/natures.php

As for knowing whether or not the nature is any good, I just look at the stats for the pokemon's pokedex entry on pokemon.marriland.com.

Anyway, I actually did have a bit of box space left... 18 spots I think. Well Totoro, let me know how you do and when you're done, I'll PM you. As for the shiny appearance... that's an interesting theory. I'm not sure I've seen any patterns like that, but I'll see if I do from now on. It sounds like it makes sense.

Does anyone know of a source that lists the Pokemon appearance rates in different areas? I remember looking at one a long time ago, but I can't find it anymore. It'd be very helpful for me with my chaining.

If not, can anybody recommend a good place to chain Starly? I feel like taking a break and going for an easier Pokemon, but one that will still be somewhat useful for me. It's found in so many places so I have no idea where to start...

But anyway, I did manage to have some success with the Hoppip. I now have six shinies, evenly split between the genders, and four of them are the nature I wanted. I'm pretty satisfied. =) I would have stayed longer but I'm seriously running low on box space so I'm going to have to start decreasing the number of shinies I catch each time.

Thanks dukeburger. BTW, I have caught you at 14. My 14th also was on the edge, but luckily spawned new patches after the capture (which took about 15 various pokeballs!) So far, of the 14 I've caught, all but 4 have taken longer than average to find, some considerably longer!

Another update: #15 showed up 20 resets later. It politely crawled into the first quickball I threw at it, which makes up for the stubborn little larvitard I caught the time before! I think I will quit at 20 if I make it that far. Still have about 275 Max Repels.

Maybe it's the Marriland guide you're thinking of? http://pokemon.marriland.com/dp-walkthrough.php

Nice work on the Hoppip shinies. I will try for those again soon, but the fields are pretty small for it, right? Is there a big field where you can hunt Hoppip?

Cool, I'm glad you're doing better than me, good luck with your goal of 20. :)

Niele... I am pretty sure I got my shiny Starly on route 202. If you chain during the day, the only other pokemon there are Shinx and Bidoof. But route 201 has only Starly and Bidoof (though also Nidoran as a pokeradar exclusive, but just stay out of the sparkling patches). So I think the chances of finding Starly on 201 may be better, but I like 202 more. Up to you, I think those are the best choices.

Off topic, but how do I quote more than one person in a single post?

AGAIN! GAH!

I'm getting so paranoid and getting all these weird little superstitions... incidentally I've noticed that if you watch the chain gauge it'll vanish right before combat starts if the chain broke.

Your best bet would definately be on route 201. The only 2 Pokemon (non-radar, anyway) are Starly and Bidoof. Not to mention, the lower the (Shiny) Pokemons level, the greater value they are untouched online.

Oh, thank you! That guide is very helpful. I don't think it's the exact same as what I looked at before (it had the percentages for all the Pokemon found in each field including when using the radar), but this will still help a lot. Thanks for the link!

As for Hoppip, yes, the field I used was a bit small. You have to reset to the side a little bit to avoid having the fourth ring patch land on an edge. But it's not too bad, I've definitely chained in more difficult areas.

Oh, and thanks Æsahættr and dukeburger for the tips on Starly! I think I'll try my luck on route 201 then.

Good luck to everyone else, happy chaining. =)

Thanks, Totoro.

I was chaining Magby mainly to try and load up on magmarizers. I got to 36 before it was broken by a stupid Fearow. Anyway, I've heard that if you have Diamond and Leaf Green, then Magby has a 50% chance of holding a magmarizer, compared to the usual 5% chance (same thing with Elekid using Fire Red in Pearl). However, I got only 1 magmarizer out of that. I was using a Linoone with pick-up and periodically checking to make sure it wasn't picking up other items. Sometimes it did, but even so, I'd think a few more magmarizers would show up. Anyone else here think (or know) that the 50% chance thing is a lie?

Yayness, I got a starly chain to 40! I hope I don't slip again, I've broken 4 starly chains of 40 like that...

Good luck ZF!

I think the gods are telling me to end my larvitar chain. I'm at 16 but #17 is just not coming. I've already invested about 387 resets or the equivalent of almost 100 Max Repels and no shiny. Still I'm stubborn. I once had to reset 500 times for a shiny, and so...maybe a new personal record (in futility) is coming?

Update: Got # 17 after 19,928 steps, or about 399 resets. Now, Dukeburger, let's see if I am rewarded with some easy ones!!!! No one could argue that I am due some, right?

Another update: We'll never know if an easy one was coming. My finger slipped and I ran into a geodude. At least it came after getting a shiny following that long reset marathon! It would have totally sucked to search that long and not get one, plus, today's my birthday, and I wanted to get at least 1 shiny to celebrate! Whew...on to another eevee attempt I think, once I get some $$$ and more Max Repels and quickballs & repeatballs!
