Good luck ZF!

I think the gods are telling me to end my larvitar chain. I'm at 16 but #17 is just not coming. I've already invested about 387 resets or the equivalent of almost 100 Max Repels and no shiny. Still I'm stubborn. I once had to reset 500 times for a shiny, and so...maybe a new personal record (in futility) is coming?

Update: Got # 17 after 19,928 steps, or about 399 resets. Now, Dukeburger, let's see if I am rewarded with some easy ones!!!! No one could argue that I am due some, right?

Another update: We'll never know if an easy one was coming. My finger slipped and I ran into a geodude. At least it came after getting a shiny following that long reset marathon! It would have totally sucked to search that long and not get one, plus, today's my birthday, and I wanted to get at least 1 shiny to celebrate! Whew...on to another eevee attempt I think, once I get some $$$ and more Max Repels and quickballs & repeatballs!

Congrats Totoro! Anyways, I just got my first shiny starly! I have about 390 supers left so I'm gonna try for at least 5!

So if I get a chain of around 40 larvitar and then I start resetting will I get a shiny one? How many resets would I need to use because I have 100 max repels do I need to buy some more?

my first chain! *cries*

I am currently in the process of chaining a shiny Makuhita...
I'm on about #20, should I be resetting soon?

Annoying thing about these guys is that they're all level 50, so I had to bring along all my level 80ish guys just to guarantee 1-shots, but unfortunately, the little guys are obsessed with using Endure. They know they're going to faint anyway, why do they insist on wasting my time?

Anyone know the approximate number of chained pokemon it takes before a shiny is about to appear?

Makuhita, you will be mine!

Or not.. 2 pokemon after I posted this, I got a Roselia.

Nobody knows the number.. We just keep reseting until the shiny appears.. BTW, I caught 2 shiny Cubones.. Took me about just 1 1/2 hour to chain it to 40 and I just kept resetting there..

It's really not that simple, but the idea is just the same.. If you read the earlier post by Shuko, You'll know the exact way on how to chain properly.. That is to encounter the same pokemon using the pokeradar until the chain reaches 40, then without entering any patch, just keep resetting the pokeradar untill you see the shiny patch..

Alright, sorry about that, I was unclear whether or not you had to go back to chaining after resetting. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, and now you are feeling my pain Luna :p We will both have our shinies one day though :D

but yeah, just start resetting the radar at 40, the chances apparently don't get any better after that

A good place to chain?

Anyone have suggestions for the ideal location of a good patch of grass for hunting shinies, besides, say, the Trophy Garden? I was chaining on route 225 for Makuhitas earlier, but I couldn't get past 20 or so, possibly because one row of grass was partially covered by the surrounding trees.

Currently chaining Pichus at the Trophy Garden - 16 ... one word.. Kricketune.. (x_x)

Thank you so much for this, it's pretty complicated but it does work. I have picked up on the process you have to go through and the number of steps you must go between patches, but now I've got chains of over thirty.

I should've chained Kricketot. It's evolution is the most annoying thing I've heard, and it wins my record of longest time to catch a shiny ¬¬

I want to chain Skitty, but they haven't swarmed for a long time. I hope they're not becoming extinct in my game..

Excellent, congratulations ZF!

You will eventually get a shiny. It may that you 200 Max repels, or you may see one the first time you reset after getting 40 (just as you sometimes get one before reaching 40). The odds appear to be 1/200 that each patch may be shiny once you reach a chain of 40. Chaining beyond 40 does not appear to increase your odds, so you really gain nothing by chaining to 41 and risk breaking your chain. Since resetting is less risky, that's the best strategy. However, it does use up a lot of repels, so I usually try to stay stocked with my full 999 before starting chains of shiny pokemon I really want. It's so easy to do this by just battleing the elderly couple with the amulet coin and vs seeker.

I am currently in the process of chaining a shiny Makuhita...
I'm on about #20, should I be resetting soon?

Odds appear to be low to get a shiny at 20, maybe not much better than if you hadn't chained. Even chains of 35 don't seem to have much better odds. The odds appear to increase exponentially between chain 35 and 40, so you really benefit by getting those last 5 links in the chain...although, again, this has not been verified or supported with data. If anyone decides to take the reset route at a lower chain length, please record your effort (# steps or # resets/repels) and report them so we can help answer this question. Until we resolve that, best advice is to chain to 40.

the little guys are obsessed with using Endure. They know they're going to faint anyway, why do they insist on wasting my time?

Totally agree about endure - hate that!!!

Anyone have suggestions for the ideal location of a good patch of grass for hunting shinies, besides, say, the Trophy Garden?

Try Rt 222, it's huge so if you reset in the center you will have a good chance of finding a 4-5 to 4-8 patch that meets the rules and is not on an edge. I think this is the easiest place to chain.

Good luck everyone. I am up to 30 on my eevee chain. I'm chaining sparkly patches, so that's trickier I think, but maybe this is the one that I get to 40? I have about 950 Max Repels left and tons of quickballs and repeatballs, so I'm going for a big score!!

I'm trying to chain Beldum right now, but My eyesight is horrible with the sandstorm. Is there anyway to remove it?

Yes, you can remove your eyesight by closing your eyes! Ha! Oh, you meant the sandstorm...sadly no. I would love a shiny trapinch, but don't even bother trying with that storm!

Eevee update: I'm up to 35! Tension is building!!! Now at 37, biting my nails. Gotta take a break for a bit!

Eevee chain

OK, I'm up to 38 on eevee. I'm considering just resetting from this point on for a bit. If that chart is right, each new patch's odds of being a shiny one are about 1/571, so I should have to reset 143 times (571/4 patches) on average to find a shiny. This will take about 35 Max Repels or 7,150 steps. I can do this easy...if the odds are right and fall in my favor. Better yet, if the chart's right, after catching the 1st shiny, my odds improve to 1/400, before increasing to 1/200 with the 40th link.

Yep, I'm going to shift to resetting. Wish me luck. As a side benefit, I can collect data for our graph.
