Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

..I'm not sure if that's a joke or not, but Stench only lowers the encounter rate for Pokemon instead of eliminating Pokemon altogether. Just avoiding a costly chain break due to a wild Pokemon appearing not in one of the radar patches for someone.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Hey, guys, I've been chaining for three days now, and no luck. :(
Highest chain of gotten was a 42 on Glameow. Pushed my luck, trying to go for a 43 chain. >_<
Wish me luck when I try to chain Ponyta? :D

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

There really, really needs to be something somewhere on this thread in huge letters warning to stop chaining at 40 and reset only for shiny patches, and possibly include proof of why such as that graph. Glancing over Shuko's original post, I don't think that's stressed enough, as we now understand WHY stopping at 40 is the right idea... and I mean... things like "even 20 could work if you have enough patience and repels" are wrong and totally misleading.

Don't get me wrong, if it wasn't for the effort that Shuko put into this, I myself never may have stuck with chaining, but it seems she's disappeared for a long time now and there has been absolutely no one moderating this thread it seems. I think the rules listed here at the beginning really need a revamp. Wiil, I know you're a mod now and you seem to be the only one who hangs out here... is there anything that could be done?

Actually, I can't, lol. Chain broke at 13 from a Kricketune.. *sigh* Gonna go get some more money, and with it, more repels!

Go fight the couple down below Hearthome City -- the Gentleman and the socialite. They give you TONS of money, especially if your pokemon has an Amulet Coin.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

dukeburger - I agree with your comment about huge letters warning to stop chaining and merely reset at 40. However, on the other hand, I think part of the wonder and mystery of chaining for shinies is piecing together all the information as you work on honing your skills. And eventually many are successful. And it makes one's success all that much sweeter having had to do a little digging -- research -- and put it all together

Also, if I understand correctly "even 20 could work if you have enough patience and repels" is technically correct; but, from my limited experience, may not be totally "wrong and misleading"

For example:

I'm trying to chain Porygon (5% chance) in the trophy garden and have had no luck getting a chain over 24 after about 15 tries. I've become relatively skilled at chaining but the majority of the Porygon chains have broken simply because of the "random" factor -- not my inability to chain according to the rules. This seems to me to be a higher incidence of random Pokes breaking the chain in the farthest shaking grass patch location than for swarming Pokes or Pokes that have a higher encounter rate for the area (correct me if I'm wrong on this assumption).

Anyway ...I am seriously considering just stopping my chain building and resetting at 24. Based on Josh1billion's Excel spreadsheet the probability of encountering a shiny would be about 1:170 max repels (5 resets per max repel) at a chain of 24. This actually may be the prudent approach -- especially considering every time the chain breaks I have to once again encounter a Porygon at an encounter rate of 1:20 (5%). It may actually take less time overall to stop chain building at 24 and go into a long drawn out reset mode. The major drawback to this for me is, as you may have noticed, I like to capture a lot of shinies once I get going. This strategy would not lend itself well to my preferred methodology.

Great idea Dukeburger! I think alot of people just read the early entries and don't benefit from our sage wisdom...:D

At the very least, Maybe Wiil or Niele (still out there, Niele?) could edit their posts on the 1st page to be an update of sorts. Then, at least those just reading page 1 would benefit from what we've learned.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Well, I actually ran some calcs while I was chaining Bagon, and even a chain of 39 only has a... 1/500 chance of a shiny I think? I dunno, I'll have to look again. However, unless there is a different formula for chains over 40, then you're right, dukeburger, that should probably be put in there.

I'll do that now. Thanks.

EDIT: Edited Shuko's first post. Thanks again dukeburger and Totoro.

Yay, thanks for adding the new tip! :D
Wish I'd seen it before I had lost my Glameow chain before, though. =(

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

It is so awesome to see so many of the people who were so helpful in helping me chain back on again (did I say how much we missed you Totoro? and where in the world are Shuko, Kasumi and Niele?) It is also great to see so many 'fresh' gamers throwing their hats into the gruelling task that is chaining :p. Anywho, chaining is a nonexistent pastime for me until college goes on break. I wanted to ask an off-topic question though. Has anyone else heard about the two Toys r' Us events for shaymin and regigigas coming up? I read about it on Serebii's website and I just want to know that it is more than a rumour.

Yup, it's true. There's articles about it on Bulbanews
