Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Quick question.. If you're chaining a Pokemon that only appears at Daytime and it turns to Nighttime in-game, will your chain be able to continue?

My experience is that the conditions (frequency of encounter, etc) that exist at the beginning of the chain persist -- however the background graphics (colors etc) continue to change based on the time of day. So yes, you will be able to keep chaining. (It's important to remember that you can't save and turn off your DS and hope to continue your chain -- doesn't work that way! But do keep your DS charged because if it goes dead you lose your chain that way too)

So, for instance if you start chaining on a particular Pokemon that is swarming one day, as long as the chain doesn't break you can continue to chain for that Pokemon for days afterward until the chain does break. I've had one chain last for up to a week and been able to capture up to 52 shinies from that one chain.

Now let me add quickly here -- don't be too impressed with that large number of shinies (52) captured from one chain. Let me assure you that the hardest part of chaining is getting a chain up to 40. You and a few others are still developing your understanding of the rules, improving your situational awareness (you see and lock in on where all 4 of the shaking patches are), and honing your physical agility so that your sprite always goes where you want it to (and not accidentally into a shaking patch breaking your chain). So because you are struggling with learning how to get ONE shiny Pokemon you imagine that capturing 50-some shinies is 50 times as hard as catching one -- it ain't!

The ramp up to 40 in your chain is the most difficult part because, even when you are absolutely good with all those things (rules, situational awareness, physical agility) there seems to be still a random factor involved (either that or we haven't actually discovered the rule that is being broken in those cases that appear to be random). So even some of us who've been working on this chaining business awhile still have a lot of chains break while we are trying to reach 40. But as dukeburger emphasized in his post #4087 please, please, please don't continue chaining after 40. You are unnecessarily staying vulnerable to the random factor -- unnecessarily because its pretty well established there is NO increase in probability of encountering a shiny after your chain has reached 40 -- there's no benefit in adding to your chain, unless your adding a shiny. And then the benefit is -- YOUR CAPTURING A SHINY!!! -- not that you will encounter shinies more frequently. Once you've reached 40 it's time to switch into resetting mode.

Resetting mode -- just keep pacing 50 steps, back and forth -- IN A SAFE AREA OF GRASS!! Trigger your pokeradar. Notice where the shaking patches are. No shiny patch? Do another 50 steps avoiding the shaking patches, back and forth -- and so on until you finally see the special shiny patch. Some folks worked out the math for probability of encountering shinies. If your chain is at 40 the probability should average out to a shiny patch appearing once in every 50 radar resets. (SIDE NOTE: here's something to look forward to should you stick with it. Some of us have seen 2 shiny patches appear at the same time after triggering the radar).

Once you have gotten to 40 in your chain and are merely resetting your radar waiting for the next shiny patch to appear, as long as you follow the rules religiously, no random Pokemon will break your chain. Every time you go to that special shiny patch it will be a shiny Pokemon in the chain you are working on. And, as long as you don't go to a bad place -- edge, corner, etc places that can always break a chain -- your chain will continue.

Wow, that's a long one. But yes, your chain continues even when the day turns to night vice versa as long as the chain is not broken.

PS : I played Crystal (hacked one), and kept encountering level 61 Charizards and my Chikorita was only at level 10. :p

shiny nidoking.the game resets itself if the time period has run out,say mine is 214:12.if it gets higher then the amount allowed it erases the file and you start over.this could be what happned.if not then i have no idea at all

Here's another thing it took me a while to figure out -- even during the phase when you are chaining up to 40 you will do as much resetting of the Pokeradar as moving to the next farthest patch. As many have said before -- it's better to run to reset your radar then take a chance when you're really not sure which one is the best patch to go to -- or the farthest is on the edge or other bad place.

Shiny nidoking -- I have no idea what happened for you -- I hope you can get your file back. My Diamond game has been freezing up on me now and again for no apparent reason -- but no data loss -- so far.

Huh? Why would that happen? As of right now, the time on my game is 936:16 and nothing's ever happened to me... and Dragonite has said that he is well over 1000 hours. All I can think of is maybe some mean person got a hold of Shiny Nidoking's cartridge and erased the data... ?

Yeah... I know what you mean. Lately it seems like it only pays off if I'm SUPER paranoid about which patches I choose. Doesn't always work though, which is frustrating because it makes chains two or three times longer to do.

Yup, that would be bad. My game has exceeded 1000 hours but I'm still playing the same file that I started a year ago (maybe earlier).

I chained Larvitars today, and got 1 shiny at the chain of 32, and then I got the chain up to 40. However, I got tired of the chaining process and decided to take a quick nap, and put my NDS in sleep mode, hoping that I can continue resetting later. When I woke up an hour later, I saw my little sister playing with my NDS, and I asked her "what are you playing?". She said "Cooking Mama", and I went like "Crap!". :p

Ouch...good job that shiny at 32 popped up though, when i get to anything above 25-30, I fully focue forgetting everything else and end up spending ages cause i'm too wary about which grass shaked and didn;t XD

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Tried chaining in the Trophy Garden today, just for a change of pace. Didn't get very far, but I DID catch a pretty decent Happiny!

Happiny - [HASHTAG]#440[/HASHTAG] (Brave)
HP: 10
Att: 20 - 21
Def: 22 - 23
SpA: 16 - 17
SpD: 31
Speed: 4

Sp.D IV of 31? I'll take it. I've just really got to re-breed for nature and maybe bump that HP IV a bit, but I'm pleased.

...And now I just realized that I used all my Rare Candies to find these IVs, and I haven't saved since I caught her. T_T

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Tried chaining Gligar last night...everything was going smoothly, I was being super paranoid about the patches I went into, then when I had my chain at about 7 or 8, the Max Repel wore off just as I was taking a step. The message disappeared and since I had already taken a step, I moved forward. Next thing I know, WHAM! A Geodude! -_- it was almost enough to make me cry...

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Edo-Kun, maybe this will help you... when I chain, I keep the poke-app thing on the counter. When I begin a chain, I set it to zero, and then every 50 steps I reset it right before I reset the radar. I think a lot of people say that they watch the app that shows you how your chain is doing, but I can never keep track of how many steps I've taken that way.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Thanks for the suggestion, Dukeburger...I'll keep it in mind next time I chain. I'm going to get a Shaymin tomorrow, and I need to raise up some starters I need to breed for trades this weekend, but I might try again while waiting for the eggs to hatch. Still kinda pisses me off, though >.< blue Gligar looks awesome

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

I actually had better luck with Gligar than I did with Larvitar -- I was in that patch of grass just north of Oreburgh. I swear, that patch of grass is INFESTED with Machop...

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Yeah, that's where I tried Gligar too... and I've never had much luck there with Larvitar either. Then again, I guess I haven't tried all too hard with either of them. That patch was nice to me on my Geodude and Machop chains though (go figure). I'm pretty sure I got both of those chains to 40 on the first try.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Hm...I'm wondering now if I shouldn't have caught that one Gligar that was level 6 or 7 or so that managed to survive my lvl. 20 Scyther's Quick Attack...that thing must have had godly defense. I hit attack, then I'm not really paying attention, then all of a sudden my Scyther's poisoned. Definite WTF moment...it still had about 1 HP left and had used Poison Sting. Wasn't shiny, but was probably damn good, now that I think about it -_- and now I'll never run into it again.
