Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Nah, didn't expect much appreciation. Just wanted it to get out into the public. And I hope the wrong idea isn't spread; this isn't hacking. The game generates the shiny, not a fancy AR code. I used my AR for two things: Finding my Secret ID, and checking the IVs of the Pokémon I caught so I could know what frame I'm on when I start. If that is what you call hacking, so be it. I guess I'm a hacker. However, if I am a hacker, why would I be bothering to BREED a shiny when I could just hack one?

To get back on subject, I don't have a Magby/Magmar/Magmortar, so I think I'll chain that after I'm done abusing the RNG :p

EDIT: Maybe I should make a thread for it if enough people ask me to...

I would love to see a thread dedicated to this technique, I'm really anxious to try it.

hey congrats

Wiil if you make the rng thread maybe you can include your secret id for people like me who do not have an AR and do not wish to purchase one for one thing

Yup, Snubull's swarming for me too today...sigh...waiting for Pinsirs...

I just tried my Platinum poke'radar for the 1st time and noticed a few different things:

The tutorial by your rival:
First, there is a really silly demonstration by your alternate gender "rival" in Platinum that takes you up to the field on Rt 202. I played the male character, so Dawn's my mentor, and she gives a really cryptic walkthrough of the radar by leading you into a field of grass and then apparently setting off her radar which causes a single patch to shake, at which point she says something vague about going to the patch to cause a pokemon to jump out at you and battle, then offering a parting comment about entering another somewhat distant patch to see the same kind of poke'mon again. You can follow her back to her spot outside of Professor Rowan's digs to talk with her and get the same nebulous hints about chaining and seeing a "different colored" pokemon (aka shiny) that came with the Diamond and Pearl games. This is really not very helpful to anyone looking for even the basics of chaining, but that's OK, that's why we're here!! :D

The poke-radar patches:
Well, in Platinum, we still get 4 patches in concentric rings around the trainer using the poke'radar. They look different in Platinum though. There seem to be basically two types:

1. Darker patches that shake vertically up and down 4 times (they don't twist like in DP, but just shuffle up and down...not sure how I feel about this in comparison, but it seems simpler and cleaner in some ways, maybe will be easier to get used to and distinguish the two patches, maybe not...time will tell)

2. Lighter patches that also shake vertically (up and down) but do so fewer times (3 times I think...doing this from memory) and shake faster, ending their shaking before the darker, longer, slower-shaking patches finish their shakes.

The lighter, faster-shaking patches seem to have the more rare and poke'radar-exclusive poke'mon again, as was the case with DP, as these are the ones I am finding Sentret in for the field of grass on Rt 202.

Anyway...have just started, so can't say more yet. Haven't chained in months and am a bit rusty, but have chains up to 20 or so first few times, plus, I never could get Sentret in Diamond or Pearl...it's one of those that has eluded me to date...that WILL chainge!

If any of this seems incorrect, it might be, I'm just starting to chain in Platinum, so might be best to just ignore silly Totoro for a bit!!

BTW, I will put a link to my website with chaining tips. I added some stuff today, including some examples of fields of grass with patches to act as a test. Now if only I can ramp that up and show actual video screens of real shaking grass!

Also, can you all help me with recreating the list of abilities that help us chain. I comiled one a while back but can't remember where that post was. If someone finds it, please post a link as I want to add this info to the webpage. UPDATE: Found this. I added this to my webpage. Let me know if I'm forgetting any abilities that help with chaining for shiny poke'mon.

Good luck chaining everyone!

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Spent most of the day looking for a shiny Shellos... :-( no luck. Hell, I had a hard enough time just running into a regular Shellos (damn Wingull, Buizel, and Chatot >.<). I did get some level grinding in, though, so I guess that's a good thing. I almost despaired of my search...I may just catch the next male shellos I run into (I'm naming it after Dr. Manhattan of Watchmen, so it makes sense that it would be a male...), but at the same time, I really, really want a shiny!

Edo-kun, have you gotten your poke'radar yet? If so, at least chain, even if you don't have much success with it...at least your odds improve 4-fold because you are seeing 4 patches at once instead of just one.

Which kind of Shellos do you want...the east or west (can't remember, sorry). I can try to chain one for you. Oh, OK, I see...East Shellos. If (when) my current Sentret chain breaks, I will go after them for you.

On another note...why can't I add a small image for my signature? I can see the image in the "Your Current Signature Picture" box, but it doesn't upload into my sig? What am I doing wrong?

Nope, no pokeradar yet. This is my first playthrough -- heck, I haven't even gotten my FC for Platinum yet. Thanks for the offer -- I may just take you up on it, depending on how my exploits go tomorrow.

As to that...I have no idea.

Well, my Sentret chain broke, as usual, so I traveled out east and took on some East Sea Shellos, and....I'm at 40! Have been resetting FOREVER, and still no shinies though. Are we sure we stop at 40 in Platinum? :D I'll keep you posted Edo-kun.

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Heh, all this talk about Shellos... that Pokemon is the bane of my existence. It's up there with Bidoof on Pokemon that I hate for being chain breakers. But at least it looks like Totoro and Edo-kun are going to be pretty happy, so congrats.

I've had some good luck chaining in Platinum too. I started out with Croagunk, as I said I would. I've gotta say, I'm impressed by the new patch animation. MUCH easier to see... the patches stood out perfectly in the rain. In DP, I could never tell where the patches were shaking, thanks to the animation of the rain splashing on the grass. I could even see what I was doing at night on Platinum!

I actually found the sparkling patches a bit harder to see... I'm not sure if this is just because of the rain, or what. What do you think, Totoro?

So anyway, after a couple chain breaks... and bad luck in the Battle Frontier... I went back for Croagunk. I was actually half-assing the chain by constantly going to patches on the edge, because I was getting sick of the small size of grass. I don't know how it didn't break. And I got an early shiny at 25! It's been a long time since I've had low chain luck. I actually barely saw the shiny patch... and I don't know if this was due to the rain interfering with it, or if the shiny patch is a lot different now too. I only noticed it because I saw something move longer than the other patches at the top of the screen. So, I caught it and it turned out to be adamant with anticipation, which is what I wanted... half-assed the chain some more, and made it to 40 somehow. I'll reset some more tomorrow... I'm pretty sick, so it's time for bed. :/

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to mention that so far, I can't notice any differences among the plain patches, and definitely nothing with the sparkling ones, as I wasn't really paying attention to those. I'm referring to how in DP you could see plain patches with a circle in the middle, and some without... and how with the sparkling patches, some looked like a duller yellow, where others were more of a flashing white. That's what I always saw, anyway. :p

Sorry to hear you're sick Dukeburger...and during spring break too?! Hope you're feeling better soon! Congratulations on the Croagunk chain though.

I agree on your comments for Platinum patches. They are easier to see now and seem to be clearly just two types. I always felt there were really only two functional types in DP too, but you're right, there were two plain patch versions, even though I think they behaved as if they were the same (i.e. you could pick either and continue your chain). I also agree that the flashy shiny patches are less flashy...which was a little disappointing as that's my favorite reward from this, but hey, you can't have everything I guess.

I did finally get two shinies from my Shellos chain...will try to reset for some more tonight. Kind of appropriate that it's Shellos as my first chained shiny ever was Gastrodon on Diamond.

Update: QUit after spending 200 Max Repels (~900 resets) and ended up with 8 shiny shellos (25 Max Repels/shiny, that's about double the average)..all shiny patches were more pale flashy versions of what I remember from Diamond/Pearl...we're going to have to be observant to avoid missing some if they all look like these. Interestingly, four shiny patches were on the edges, and one was in the very corner of the field, but none ended my chain when I went after them (have never yet passed up a shiny... :D )

Next up...?

Re: Shiny Pokemon with the Pokeradar

Thanks, Totoro... I'm sick enough that I can tell I'll be sick for all of spring break though. :( But for some reason, I seem to get my best chains when something bad is happening in my real life. I was sick for 2 weeks of winter break which was when I finally got Nidoran, I had strep throat when I got Houndoom, and had some more personal stuff going on when I got Eevee and Gligar.

I am going to have to chain under normal conditions (no weather) and see what else I can make of the changes to the patches. I'm really hoping for a Pinsir or Larvitar swarm soon. If not, I may go for Electabuzz next. Is it even worth bringing a static lead for that, with all the electric types in the area?

When you say "all patches were very pale flashes," are you talking about the shiny patches? I'm up to 5 shiny Croagunks now, and I've gotta say, I'm not sure, but I feel like the shiny patches don't "glow" as much, maybe? Maybe it's just the rain distracting me, but it does seem like they're not as obvious. Still noticeable, but don't seem to stand out as much as in DP.

No shiny patches on the edge yet in this chain. I think Dragonite is the only one with enough discipline to pass up shiny patches on the edge. My second shiny Croagunk is adamant with rain dish so I already know I have the best of both worlds, and if my chain were to break now, it wouldn't be too big a deal. I'm really just continuing it for better IV sampling and trade fodder, but I think I'll quit around 8, rather than the usual 10.

Oh noooo! I finally made a 40 chain of magnemite but it took an HOUR. I quit, but I'll start again cause I love shinies. But still!

Now I'm gonna see what's swarming... YAY! Larvitar!!!:D I would prefer a beldum but larvitar is cool too

Of course. I have 8 now, but even if only two, one of them would be yours. I started chaining them specifically to give you one!
