some are born great, some achieve greatness, some volunteer through shiny pokemon forums to find greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them. Seriously, any help is welcome!

Update on the Gloom experiment:

I'm up to 8 shinies now (chain = 47). Shinies # 6, 7 and 8 have come quicker. #6 came after 3,426 steps (~55 resets, 192 patches), then #7 showed up on the next set of patches spawned after I caught #6, so zero steps and 0 resets/4 patches seen on that one. #8 came 706 steps later for an equivalent of 11 resets and 40 new patches seen before a shiny. I'm still resetting and up to about 1,000 steps so far in search of #9. So far as my chain increases, my odds seem to increase too...but way too little data to really say anything yet.

Hmm... very interesting, and a good idea. I actually have a chain of Glameow going right now; I've been resetting for shinies for the last little while - my chain's at 45 now, but I started at 38. (So I guess I caught 7 shinies already... wow.) Too bad, I should have started keeping track earlier. But still, I'll gladly help out and track how long it takes me to get my shinies from here on.

I can say I have a feeling that whoever said the odds stop increasing after 40 was right. My highest chain was around 85, and when I started resetting again I didn't seem to be encountering them any more frequently than I was at 40... could just be bad luck, though.

Well I'm at a chain of 40 right now. Unfortunately I didn't read this until I'd gotten the first Shiny Ponyta, but since then I've been tracking my steps. I'm at 2,444 steps with no second shiny yet...

Nice! Thanks for the enthusiastic efforts. poke_fan, I also struggle to get long chains, didn't mean to suggest that it's a lark for me to drive right up to 40. I find the field where Gloom is now (all bugs and grass-types) relatively easy to chain in, so tried this there. I fail often. In fact, last night I broke a chain of absol (I was at 39), which I want badly but never seem to get, on a 4-7 patch! All I can think was that the 4-7 patch I dove into was sitting right next to a 3-6 patch and so the double-patch rule of Shuko's applied. Funny, usually I ignore that rule with no dire consequences.

As for the data, maybe everyone can just post their results when their chain's end and I will plug them into a spreadsheet and see what we get. Remember, just track the chain #, then the number of steps to the next shiny. Also, try to reset near the center, be good about sticking close to 50-60 steps between resets (don't pull your hair out over this - I just need to estimate the number of resets/# steps) and rack up those shinies!!!

yeah but also chaining Geodude at night seems easy to me. I will try to chain again.

EDIT: It broke on 31

You know, if we get enough data for at least four chain lengths, we can fit a curve to match the plotted points. =)

I'm working on Geodude at the moment - I'm up to three shinies (woo hoo!). I'll let you know the data when I finish chaining (or lose the chain).

Similarly I'm at 3 shinies on my chain. It hasn't broken yet but I've been collecting the info as I go. I'll post it all in one go rather than having it all over the place, but there's been a lot of space between all three of the shinies.

Alrighty, Geodude chain over! Here's the data I collected. Step counts are cumulative, because I didn't want to reset the pedometer.

It took me 2158 steps to reach a chain of 40 - I don't know if that's important, but it might be. Then I got my first three shinies at 2658, 2904 and 9704. Then I went through a period where I kept blundering into the wrong patch, either by slipping or misjudging the position - it happened six times in succession, but thankfully none of them broke the chain. That's what I like about chaining common Pokemon. =) Anyway, they happened at 10152, 14201, 16101, 17360, 19037 and 19053. I don't know if that makes a difference, but it might - by this point I've walked close to ten thousand steps, but seen no more shinies, despite the fact that I should be averaging approximately one every 2500 steps.

By this point, my chain is at 49 Geodudes, and I got five more shinies, at 21007, 22607, 23507, 24062, and 26658, accidentally attacking the penultimate Geodude rather than capturing it. I slipped again and ran into another patch at 26712, but continued until I ran out of repels at 27500 steps. I tried to make do by switching a Pokemon with Intimidate into the front of the party, but only managed another two steps before a Machop got in the way. That makes me slightly annoyed, but not really surprised. Oh well, I got seven shiny Geodudes. Just got to get to the PC to check their natures, etc.

A preliminary calculation shows that the average number of steps I took per shiny (not counting the steps taken while chaining) is 3062.5. Assuming the game knows nothing of the gambler's fallacy, I should be owed a couple of short-chain shinies, methinks. =D

I learnt three things from this chain:
1. For some curious reason, I constantly found myself tempted to go for normal glittery patches, because I thought they might have been shiny patches and had them mistaken. I've got no idea why I thought that, because they look nothing alike.

2. There's a whole range of levels of glitteriness, some of them are really bright and flashy, while others are dim. Brighter than the normal patches, but still dim.

3. I'm really not cut out for this sort of prolonged chaining. =)

OK, I'm not done with my chain but this is the last I'll be on the comp tonight. Fortunately Sydney's basically shut down for APEC tomorrow so I can get a lot done then =3
My chain is at 48, with 7 Shiny ponyta's thus far. Her'es the data that I haven't really done any calculations on;

At 40 I encountered my first, but didn't check the numbering and so officially started at 41.
At 41 I went into an accidental wrong patch ater 4651 steps, lucky it didn't break.
At 42 I got my second shiny after 5373 (total since started at 41) steps.
At 43, 3rd shiny after 11519 steps
At 44, 4th shiny after 20717
At 45, 5th shiny after 21171
At 46, 6th shiny after 21670
At 47, 7th shiny after 28573

My chain is still at 48 with a grand total of 33570 steps. I'm getting tired...I think I have enough Ponyta to live...xD

You know, that sounds exactly like my idea of fun! =D
If only I could do it...

I've begun to accept the fact I can't do it and it's probably because of the fact I can't control my eyes properly.

-My stupid, lousy eyes won't track things I look at properly.
-I can't look where I want instantly with my eyes, I keep jumping past or not going far enough.
-My eyes won't run smoothly down a list, I always skip lines.
-When I'm reading I always skip lines or go back to the beginning of the line I just read, stuff like that.
-When I'm reading a table I can't match the columns unless I have something to line them up with.
-I can't count the patches of grass without using my stylus.
-My peripheral vision is terrible so I can only see what I'm looking straight at.
-When I look at something it takes about a whole second for that information to register in my brain
-I can't judge distance with my eyes so I can never remember where the patches of grass were if I don't keep my stylus on it when it appears and look at another one immediately afterwards, but even then I only remember where two patches were.

I hate my eyes, but I don't think there's anything I can do about it.
I also hate Statistics tables; I often read them wrongly because of all the columns and rows.
When I first started chaining I tried to ignore this problem, but in the end it was no use.

You're probably starting to get fed up with me, but I honestly can't do chaining and I don't want people to think I'm just lazy or impatient by not doing it.

I think it's probably better if I don't join in with this data collecting. I'd love to do it, though. =(

Maybe I can just use your data and I can draw my own graph! Yeah, that sounds great. I don't want you to think I'm using you, though, by not helping to collect any of it, so I want to ask for permission first...

Ugh. I'm at a chain of 30 meowths and it's KILLING ME. I've been trying for Eons to get a chain of Eevees this high, and every time I go past thirty, I break the chain. So I don't dare go beyond it for Meowth either. xD (Die, Trophy Garden! Die!) Now i'm sure I have a long wait for a shiny Meowth. :p but it'll be worth it. :3

I've chained several things successfully in the trophy garden before, but several have been due to luck. My Cleffa, Porygon, and my Staravia were found there on extremely low chains, but my Pikachu and Castform were at higher chains. Still... I'm not chaining any higher than 30 in there ever again... and the same goes for Eterna forest. xD It's just as bad, darnit!

What are your least favorite places to chain?

Ugh, I hate that. If you break it yourself, you at least know it's your fault and can put your errors right. When it breaks out of spite (that's what I call it anyway) there's nothing you could do.

Acuity Lakefront has got to be a terrible place to chain. It's not helping my horrible mood, grah. Not only that every Pokemon shows up except Sneasel, I can never find even just normal patches either. Ugh.

Currently hoping chaining Floatzel is a lot easier. :)

I hate chaining in the sandstrom, and it sucks that i want a trapinch.
Shuko, try resetting at 15 or 20 in the trophy garden with eevee or meowth. I did and i got 2 shiny eevees ( now an espeon and umbreon)
