I've begun to accept the fact I can't do it and it's probably because of the fact I can't control my eyes properly.
Hmm... that's not so good. You could try a trick others have used - place a screen protector over the upper screen, and use a marker of some kind (a CD-writing marker is ideal) to trace out the outlines of the third and fourth rings on the screen. Since the player character is always in the centre of the screen, the third and fourth rings will always be in the same place (unless you're going up and down stairs, or something).

On a side note, you mentioned in another thread you were breeding a Geodude for use in contests, and you also mentioned in this thread you wanted a shiny Geodude. How about a shiny Geodude for use in contests? Because I managed to catch a shiny Geodude with Lax nature (likes sour). Want it? =)

What are your least favorite places to chain?
I tend to only chain in places I like, so I haven't really tried out many other places. But yes, I have tried the Trophy Garden, and found it quite irritating. Any place with weather I avoid like the plague.

Places I hate are Routes 206, 201, 216, 217, 228, 229
That's interesting - I rather like 229. =)

I've had a lot of bad luck in that place...
229 is where I got my first chained shiny. Not to mention my second and fourth. It'll always hold a special place in my heart. =D

On a side note, today's swarm is Skitty on Route 222. Time to get chaining. =)

Alrighty, Geodude chain over! Here's the data I collected. =)

Her'es the data that I haven't really done any calculations on;

Nice work! I'll build what I can into a spreadsheet and post a graph sometime soon. How do you post a picture? I can't seem to find those directions anywhere. Anyone?

You know, that sounds exactly like my idea of fun! =D

I think it's probably better if I don't join in with this data collecting. I'd love to do it, though. =(

Maybe I can just use your data and I can draw my own graph! Yeah, that sounds great. I don't want you to think I'm using you, though, by not helping to collect any of it, so I want to ask for permission first...

Nicole, you're welcome to use our data as you wish. No need to join the experiment unless you want to. I think I speak for all when I say we're just trying to help and learn from each other.

I'm not chaining any higher than 30 in there ever again...

Good luck. Would you mind tracking your search effort (# steps you walk, number of repels, or number of resets - whichever is easiest for you)? I am certainly curious about whether it really takes as many resets to get a shiny at a chain of 30 as that graph projects. If so, you're not much better off chaining to 30 than you are resetting at a chain of 1!

I haven't had time yet to continue my Gloom chain, which is at 47 with 8 shinies, but I will try to keep it going tonight. You're right, it's kind of monotonous, but it's still a blast to see those shiny patches, even once you already have the target.

You need to upload the graph onto an image hosting site, like Photobucket, and from there take the IMG Code and paste it into a post here. Not sure how you'd get about putting a graph on Photobucket though...but that's porbably just me...

I'll start my Cubone chain shortly, and hope for good results!

{img}Image URL goes here{/img} albeit with brackets instead of braces. You'll need to upload the image somewhere first. Alternately, you could try adding it as an attachment - the attachment options are at the bottom of the page you get when you push "Post Reply".

The trick is, I'm not certain whether the monotony is worth the shinies. For me, in any case. =)

I decided to chain Geodudes today while waiting for a parcel to arrive. I wasn't expecting to get very high, but managed to get to 60 chained and 5 shinies from it. My first shiny geodude actually appeared chained at 24.

Ark will one day be raised into an awesome shiny Golem :D I named him after a friend who often refers to himself as "a rock" XD

I also got another shiny Surskit on Tuesday, but I broke the chain right afterwards XD

Congrats! Only... you got five shinies while waiting for a parcel to arrive? Just how slow does the post move, anyway? =)

The Skitty ditty data:

Took me 1806 steps to get a chain of 40. At 5454 steps, I got my first shiny. At 6144 I blundered into the wrong patch, but it didn't break my chain. At 8106 I attempted to walk around a patch but missed, and got a Chatot. Eight thousand steps, and only one shiny. This game so owes me.

Anyway, enough chaining for today. Maybe I'll do some contesting. =)

Incidentally, does anyone else think shiny Skitty's shade of muddy orange is quite ugly, or is that just me?

You'll get one eventually. Just play it safe, especially when you start getting long chains. Don't take risks, don't go for ones on the edge, and avoid going for patches when you can't see all four. Remember: when in doubt, reset.

Sometimes it's worth a gamble if you can't see all four - note that a 4-7 or 4-8 patch is guaranteed to be the furthest, as the furthest patch in the third ring is six steps away. A 4-6 patch is probably ok, since there's only a 1/6 chance of getting a 3-6 patch at the same time. On the other hand, going for a 3-6 patch when you can't see the fourth-ring patch is a bad idea, as there's a 5/8 chance that the fourth-ring patch will be at least as far away. One- and two-ring patches are right out, as even the furthest patch in ring two is the same distance as the closest patch in ring four. Note they're not guaranteed to break your chain (as I can attest) but they're more likely to.
