Just a flying question, where can you chain Pikachu's? I never knew you could.

Please don't say Eterna Forest...

Trophy Garden. Good luck, you're going to need it. 'Specially if you've spoken to Mr. Backlot... (the variety of Pokemon in there is effing ridiculous!)

I actually had at least 2 extra pokemon wandering around back there, Igglybuff, Chansey and maybe Minun too. They didn't give me much trouble, I just had to be extra careful to make sure the squares I picked were actually pika, but it wasn't too tough.

The Pika chain was actually the first I initiated there, and it kept going nicely. ^^;

Ponyta, and feebas.

Does anybody know any good areas in Diamond to chain ponyta? I know where some are located but just curious if there are any other places other than route 210 that contain a lot of ponyta.

Also, I'm confused on where in diamond you can find feebas. I've been looking everywhere for them and can't seem to find one.. I know they are in Mt. Coronet, but where?

Ponyta can be found commonly on routes 206, 210, 211, 214 and 215. I'm not sure which is best, so if I were you, I would just stop at the first one that has a good sized patch of grass.

Feebas is much more difficult. In the basement of Mt. Coronet where Defog is needed, Feebas will be in four random spots on the water that change daily. You have to use the Super Rod and a Pokémon with Surf. I just caught one yesterday, but it took a very long time. It's like Battleship, only a lot less fun.

it might be a good idea to reset if you see your shake type in patches 3-3 and 4-6 during the same reset instead of going to 4-6.
008.png

I don't know though if this is correct yet. I could very well have just mistaken those shakes for the one I was looking for. Some of the shakes look very similar to me. But the fact that I broke the chain on two separate occasions with the same set up (both 3-3 and 4-6 shaking) has made me think it was something more than a coincidence.

Hey everyone. Man, I've had so little time for this forum or chaining lately! Got a couple shiny floatzels this past weekend and am working on some ponyta, but lost several 30# bagon chains @$#&%! On the Floatzels, I tried resetting at 36 but after about 60 Max Repels, decided to chain up to 40 and then got my shinies pretty soon after.

Anyway, this 4-6 issue bugs me. It's obviously tough to pass up 4-6 patches, especially when chaining in a small field of grass where just seeing 4-anything patches of the right type that aren't on the corners is rare. Has anyone confirmed Skye's hypothesis that there is a snag for 4-6 patches only when the 3 ring patch is at 3-3? It'd be nice to know if that's a rule. I think I mentioned that I have only had a 4-7 patch break my chain once, and that was when it shook right next to a 3-6 patch. I have had some pretty safe looking 4-5 patches (saw the other 3 and all were less than 5 paces) cream me though. Not sure why.

BTW: hint of the day for all of those cricket-haters and day-loving chainers. I set my machine 12 hours back so that it's day at night and night during the day. I did this because I usually only have time to chain at night and hated running into the crickets or seeing the field get darker and darker. Now, when I start, it's always nice and bright and those crickets are sleeping!

Update: Just got my first shiny Bagon - on a chain of 17! That just missed tying my shortest shiny-producing chain of 16 (Skarmory). Nice, as I really wanted a shiny salamance - love those dragons! Of course, now I also want a shiny shelgon and a shiny bagon, and one of each for my son, and then one for each one of you! Oh well, I'd better get up to 40 first!

Just got a shiny Pikachu - three of them, in fact. My first ever shinies from the Trophy Garden - maybe next time I'll actually be able to get one of the rarer Pokemon.

So here's my data - are we still collecting data? It took me 3115 steps to get to a chain of 41. I got my first shiny at 3530, then ran into the wrong patch at 7714, but got another Pikachu. I got my second and third shinies at 8957 and 9408, then ran in to the wrong patch again at 12768 steps. I was planning to go back to chaining at 15000 steps, as I was running low on Repels (forgot to stock up before I started) and wanted to get as many Light Balls as I could, but I slipped at 14418 (so close!) and got a Staravia. Don't want no stinking Staravia, thanks very much. I'm getting better at not slipping, but those few occasions when I still do just hurt so bad...

Oh well, today's chain is Phanpy in Route 207 - I might see how well I can do at them. Hopefully Geodudes don't get in my way. Plus, I got eight Light Balls, one of them in the hands of one of my shinies. Anyone want one? =)

Edit: Just lost a chain of Phanpy at thirty-nine. On the very patch that was going to be my last before I started resetting. In a 4-7 patch with the same type of shake. To a Machop. Kill kill stabby stabby murder. Empoleon uses Hydro Cannon, level five Machop dies fifty-seven times over.

Stuff this, I'm going to bed. Phanpy will just have to swarm some other day.

It is, I've been doing it for a while and I've got no shinies.

Which patch is the best one to go for when chaining swarm pokemon? I've just visited Swarm Girl in Sandgem and she said Lickitung at Lake Valor, and after trying all known types of grass, I've gotten Graveler's every time!

You should be able to do a swarm just by using regular non-glittery grass. Unless what you want is something really rare, your best bet is the normal grass.

Thank you for the location of feebas. Someone told me it was in the watery area in MT.Coronet, but aren't there a lot of those? idk...

O well, anyway thanks. Very specific response.

Nintendo Events?

Why do you have to go to a Nintendo Event just to get Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Deoxys, Celebi, Jirachi, Mew, etc?

Do the people who run the thing, actually think that other adults are going to allow their children to go to Japan, or some other country? I don't understand that at all, or am I just mistaken? My grandparents would never let me go to Japan just for a pokemon game...? I mean, (lol) seriously? I would like an Arceus.. but unfortunately, can't get one because I have to go to Japan to get the azure flute..Am I not right?

What's that pokemon center in New York all about?

I'm certain I was wrong with all that. Sometimes they break and sometimes they don't. Very confusing and frustrating.

What I suspect is going on with those and also when a chain that seems to be right in every way breaks, is that it actually wasn't right even though you might think it was. What I'm starting to notice is that there seem to be more types of shakes/wiggles to the grass than previously thought. Here's the link to the post I made about my findings.

And a follow-up.

The differences can be very subtle and difficult to notice at first. After watching very carefully though, I'm pretty sure this is what's going on.

The events are often done in tours at local malls. I got a Celebi along with other rare pokemon at one a year or two ago. Sometimes the events are "give-aways" through Toys R Us. (For instance, September 29th from noon until 3pm you can get Manaphy at Toys R Us downloaded to your DS. It'll come in a unique all-red pokeball and holding some unusual red scarf item.) I got my Mew through Toys R Us about a year ago during a Nintendo promotional event. They don't only occur in Japan & New York. heh Keep an eye out on the news at Pokemon.com for any upcoming events.

If you're not seeing any Lickitung at all, it might be worth checking whether or not you're in the right area. I apologise if I sound patronising, but are you sure you're at the Lake Valor and not the Valor Lakefront? Because they're different places. I think you are in the wrong place, because besides the lack of Lickitung, you don't ever find Graveler at the lake itself. The patch of grass in Lake Valor is on the South side of the lake, so you'll need to Surf.

While I completely agree with you, this isn't exactly the right thread for this. Unless you want to be able to chain for event legendaries with the Pokeradar. =D

Yeah, American local malls. Leaving the rest of the world out in the cold.

Including Canada. Grumble grumble...

I also got a swarm of Lickitung at Lake Valor today. Strange... I decided to try my luck, though, and I lasted for 25, which is my longest chain yet, until a Wobbuffet got in the way. Grumble grumble...

I'm having such a grumbly day.

Well...this remains clear as mud Skye! One step forward, two back. It makes you want to reconsider that rule "When in doubt, reset". Maybe we should change that to "Unless the patch is shiny, reset!" Seriously, I have been jumping into 4-8 with no dire consequences, also 4-7 seem good. Those 4-6 seem to get me a lot - more than I think I would attribute to a different type of patch. I find myself chaining using them up to about 20 and then switching to 4-7 and 4-8 patches. Just like I often chain off the edge up to 20.

I've successfully reached 40 on my bagon chain and have 3 shinies thus far. I'm using my son's gear for that chain as he has Pearl. I'm giving him tons of shinies so he's happy to loan it to me. I also bravely sacrificed by level 90+ Raquaza to him which he now has at level 100. I also have a chain of 35 ponyta on my rig. Hoping to complete that chain and snag some shinies tonight. Surprisingly, ponyta have been difficult for me - go figure.

Yey, managed to get 3 shiny Farfetch'd (my first ever shiny since Vulpix in Pokemon Silver) in 3 hours until running into a Gastrodon. Oh well, it's gotta end sometime. Next up, Cubone!

Also, I'm just wondering, has anyone made any developments in the general Chain theory, that the odds increase as the chain increases?

Not sure if you're referring to the data we were collecting on chain length vs. shiny encounter rates? If so, we really haven't yet collect much data, and almost none on chains between 30-40. Although I think most would agree it's just a matter of degrees and that encounters of shinies clearly happen more frequently when you have longer chains. The question is, how long to go for. Our early data on chains of 40+ suggest that odds do not appear to increase as you lengthen your chain past 40. On average, it takes about 12 Max Repels, or about 50 resets to get a shiny once you've hit 40. So...stop your chain at 40 and start resetting. Adding to your chain does not seem to help your chances at all. Of course, we could be completely wrong on that too - need more data. My personal experience seems to bear out that odds do seem to radically increase when you go from the late 30s to 40. If you believe that referenced curve, you really benefit by getting to 40.

good data going, i'm really just trying to get a chain to at least 25 and see how many resets it's going to take me.

More shiny data: Chaining for Surskit at Lake Verity. Took 4309 steps to reach a chain of 40, then got shinies at 6553 and 8553. Ran into a Wobbuffet at 8840. Grumble. (On the subject of Wobbuffet, I don't get why they changed the name so much when they translated it, removing such a wonderful pun in the process. Never mind that it now makes basically no sense for Jessie's *cough* Wobbuffet to keep popping out all the time in the anime. But I digress...)
