More shiny data: Chaining for Surskit at Lake Verity. Took 4309 steps to reach a chain of 40, then got shinies at 6553 and 8553. Ran into a Wobbuffet at 8840. Grumble. (On the subject of Wobbuffet, I don't get why they changed the name so much when they translated it, removing such a wonderful pun in the process. Never mind that it now makes basically no sense for Jessie's *cough* Wobbuffet to keep popping out all the time in the anime. But I digress...)

Nice job, I found surskits to be tough, just getting one before flaming out. Here's a new chart with some of the more recent data (I've combined everyone's thus far). In this chart, I plotted chain length against the ~ number of resets for maybe a more practical look at the relationship. It still seems evident that there is no real advantage in chaining above 40:

Ooh, that looks... scattered. =)

Any chance of getting your raw data in Excel (or even .txt) form?

*sighs* I have pretty much given up on chaining....no matter how high I get(50's)and as many times as I reset I cant find 1 shiny! Yes I have chained ponytas, Geodudes, and the swarm of the day and I also loose or give up my chain. Well maybe I should chain one more.......I need to calm down after I loss a 60 chain of Geodudes....

Try resetting from 40. How many resets are you doing? Probability says you should expect something in the range of fifty resets, but since that's just an average, it's possible to get a shiny on your first reset, or to go five hundred and never see one. Though five hundred resets without a shiny is highly improbable. =)

Hmmm... it seems like the way I chain for shiny Pokémon is somewhat different than the method that is prescribed here.

What I'm reading is that you guys do this:

1. Walk into patch of grass.
2. Use Pokéradar.
3. Go into wriggling grass, beat/catch Pokémon.
4. Repeat step 3, 20/40 times.
5. Reset the Pokéradar repeatedly, until a shiny patch is found.
6. Catch shiny Pokémon.

What I did was slightly different, though:

1. Walk into patch of grass.
2. Use Pokéradar.
3. Go into wriggling grass, beat/catch Pokémon.
4. Repeat step 3. If in doubt, reset the radar once and try again.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until shiny grass patch is found.
6. Catch shiny Pokémon.

I managed to catch a shiny Swellow on a chain of 58 this way, and the patch appeared after I fainted another normal Swellow (and not by resetting the Pokéradar repeatedly); does anybody else use my method? Or is the first method the "usual" way for most of you?

There are proponents for either method. The advantage of resetting is that it removes the risk of breaking a chain if you happen to walk into the wrong patch. The advantage of more chaining is that it's not half so dull as resetting. =D

It's up to you, but currently the theory is that the probability doesn't improve much once you pass 40, though if you want to do some extended chaining and let us know your steps counts, that ought to help us figure out whether or not longer chains help. =)

The most resets I ever did was around 60.
Sixty resets can be a drop in the ocean sometimes.

What I find myself doing after I reach 40 in a chain and I start getting bored or tired after I have been resetting for a long while is to close the DS so it goes into sleep mode, plug it in, and walk away. This way, you can go back to it without having to start the chain all over again once you feel refreshed and ready to continue.

Maybe this approach will help you as well? :)

Yep, I do this too. In fact, coincidentally, I am on my longest resetting marathon so far. I have a chain of 44 bagon that I've gotten 4 shinies from. The 1st shiny came at a chain of like 18. The second and 3rd came after I hit 40 and started resetting, and they took about 300 steps (~ 6 resets) and 1800 steps (~ 35 resets). Then #4 took about 56 resets, and I'm up to about 17000 (I reset my step counter after each shiny) steps looking for #5, or the equivalent of about 340 resets! I just took a break to get away from it a bit. Of course, the patch behind the head or hidden by trees/signs, etc. really confounds things as you could be missing shiny patches in those places.

Route 222 is a dream for chaining!

There are a couple of sweet spots there in the middle that, when stood in to reset, will have all four shaking patches guaranteed to be seen within the grassy area. (Unless of course one shakes behind your head.)

I managed to get a chain of Skitty, swarming at Route 222, to 40 in under an hour. Under an HOUR. Also, the 37th was a shiny. The chain is still waiting for me which I'll get back to sometime later. I was using the, what I call, super-fast shaking non-blinking patches. I followed all my usual rules: no edges, farthest away but not if it's 4-8 (I still don't trust those ;-)), reset when in doubt. I doubted a lot. I also went to a few 4-6's when 3-3 also showed up and more when they didn't. Not once did I think my chain was going to break.

I also followed my new guideline-- Watch those shakes carefully! After this experience, and a few others in the days before it, I am now a firm believer that most chains break unexpectedly, when walking to what appeared to be the right patch, because the player mixed up the shakes. I used to do it all the time. I still do with the ones that light up. In previous posts I've made here you'll notice that I mentioned the fact that I had trouble telling some of the shakes apart. I made it my mission to figure out why. And I think I did when I noticed that, to my eyes, that there are not two but three non-blinking types of shakes.

I find that it helps to be able to believe that there's a chance that maybe I wasn't right or that I made a mistake when choosing a patch that broke my chain. And now, my chaining is better because of it.

Yeah, 222 is where most new chainers are advised by the group to start. Flaaffy is especially easy if you use static there, but floatzel is easy too, and they are all like level 40, so it's a good place to build up the experience points. Plus, the rich dude is right there if you want some easy cash!

As for the shakes, I basically use the non-flashy slow shakers. I like the extra time those shakes give me to spot all 4 patches. I don't think my eyes are as quick as yours Skye.

Things just got awesome

After going to Route 203 to chain a swarm I didn't really want, but was gonna try to get some shinies for trade, and also getting about 34 Ralts and 38 Kirelia or w/e the evolved from is called before the chains broke I decided to really stock up and go after Eevee again. This hunt has been a 3 day QUEST. Went in with 650 Max Repels, over 90 Ultra Balls, Quick Balls, Dusk Balls, Repeat Balls, and 2 Luxury Balls I had from before. And like 89 Great Balls I didn't touch. And 136 Leppa Berries. Yea, I was ready.

Somehow I got up to 40 Eevees and THEN I ran into a patch I didn't mean to right off the bat. I was lucky as shit, it was another Eevee and so I started resetting at 41 chain. I now own TWELVE shiny Eevee. They are all named with various names ranging from Sparkle and Mist to Ulima and Omega. FIVE will be up for trade. I will get it all sorted to I have their name, gender and nature, and I'm going to draw a little pic of them all with their info next to them and then people can look at that if they want to trade. Trades that will be accepted are the ones I want in my signature. Gawd that took a while, but I am psyched.

Edit: Pic and info done. http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h51/Eoko/ShinyEeveesforTrade.jpg
Again. I will trade them for shinies that I want and are listed in my signature. OR a shiny Shaymin. Yes, I know you'd have to cheat to get the Shaymin in the first place, so if you're gonna cheat, at least make it shiny too. lawl I want that little hedgehog thing so BAD.

Hey guys, I haven't been on for a while so let me give you a recap of what I've been doing.
First I've caught three new shinies, say hello to Silver the Beldum (now Metagross) and my two shiny Geodude. I hope most of you have been successful and that those who haven't become successful soon.

Word to the wise: if you value your sanity, don't chain Bunearys. For that matter, stay away from Eterna Forest all together.

Of course, the patch behind the head or hidden by trees/signs, etc. really confounds things as you could be missing shiny patches in those places.
Be strong, Totoro. It's not worth the risk to run into them. =)

Yah, I know. I mentioned that many pages ago. =D

4-8 (I still don't trust those ;-))
I've never had any problems with 4-8.

I prefer the glittery patches. They're easier to see, and they're not anywhere near as hard to separate from shiny patches as people make out. It's also easier to spot the different types, if in fact I wasn't imagining that there are different types...

I now own TWELVE shiny Eevee.
Congrats!

What, all of them? Don't you think someone else might want one? =Þ

Here's the data on that Skitty chain I had going, if you guys are still looking for this stuff. I don't know how many steps it took to get the shiny at 37 nor do I know how many it took to reach 40.

41: 6163 steps and 123 resets
42: 3310 steps and 66 resets
43: 2413 steps and 48 resets
44: 6787 steps and 135 resets
45: 2751 steps and 55 resets

Dang...nice going Eoko. That Eevee's a hard one to chain (I've failed thus far at least, but will win out in the end, I am sure)

I still marvel at you people that can chain in the weather. I'm just too much of a chicken to do it at this point.

Word to the wise: if you value your sanity, don't chain Bunearys. For that matter, stay away from Eterna Forest all together.

But...I really want the cicada series in shiny (although the colors suck...why oh why could they not have left the brown and pink in the box when they painted the shiny morphs! So many cool possibilities, and so many dissappointing results!!!)

Thanks Skye. I'll add the data. Nice work.

Wow, that's amazing, my best so far on Eevee was a 18 chain last night, it broke randomly after I fainted the 19th eevee. >.<
